In terms of skill: we get new players joining everyday so it gets updated every day. In terms of personality, well, we don't know the AI players, but out of the ones in the lobby who can speak English: 1. p _ _ _ _ _ (luckily this guy is gone now after dancing is nerfed) 2. J _ (doesn't like vaccines) 3. S _ _ _ _ S _ _ _ _ _ (haven't seen him in a while) 4. M _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (was active in A24 then got banned, likes to spam the chat with insults but never plays) 5 F _ _ _ _ ? (likes to farm points from noobs then quit without resigning to keep his rating high) 6 ? 7 ? 8 ? You are free to fill in the gaps with letters using your imagination. Those who stay in the lobby a lot can know from just the first letter and name length. I am glad that I can only find 5 names, out of hundreds of players I have seen.2 points

Decger might be even more up on that list as he is one of the most op team players i have seen, and even vs good other players his flank usually is fast gg, but he doesnt play 1v1 for example. Emperior, Lorenz and Wendy arguable also deserve honourable mention2 points

Why? I can beat him easily. Just take Ptols, get a few slings + pike, do your boom and push with a few rams then he's dead. Only 1 of these is active on their main account... others have betrayed 0ad by playing AoE and 1 or 2 of these might be in a smurf account. Historically they probably were the best but if they come back now they might get beaten up by any 1700+ players in the lobby. If these guys are in a smurf account then that's another story, but I think smurf accounts should be disqualified. Out of the active players, never underestimate the power of vinme, berhudar (who claims to be nub) and hamdich (who is everywhere but invisible). Also @MarcusAureliu#s is capable of pulling a few OP moves. @nani is an incredibly OP player but I don't know exactly how strong he is because he almost never plays on standard settings or 1v 1. It's hard to say who is good if you are looking at a weird map with nomad (potentially imba resources). @Emperior is also very good but again, I don't know exactly how good. Wendy just did an OP hold against Dakeyras and half of JC so he is also a potential player on the list. lorenz11 did support me well and finish off all enemies in our 3v3 so he is to be considered. Out of the 3 1v1 games I played with him, I won the first 2 but lost the last one where he surprised me with a skirm inf rush.2 points

That's all fine and good to not use hard counters/attack bonuses, but now you have to find a combination of attack and resistance values for a dozen different unit types to make some kind of good counter system.2 points

@Yavin another thing you could do if you want to, is embellishing some of the maps in the Macedonia campaign, which is going to be included in the next versions of the game. The creator asked for some help on that side, for the city of Thebes, and it seems you are the best man here. What do you think?2 points

Hi everyone, I am happy to present a 5-part campaign titled "Macedonia: Rise to Power"! The campaign covers the times of Philip II and ends shortly before Alexander the Great gains control of the kingdom. Some screen shots are included later in this post. The scenario files for A23 can be found here:; https://github.com/SciGuy42/Macedonia_0ad For A25, conversion is still underway. The first 5 missions have been converted and can be found on the a25 branch of the github: https://github.com/SciGuy42/Macedonia_0ad/tree/a25 To install, you must download all files from the maps/scenarios/ folder in the repository and place them in the /maps/scenarios folder where your custom scenarios built with atlas are saved at by default. On Linux, this should be at /home/<user>/.local/share/0ad/mods/user/maps/scenarios. Note that for A25, you also have to put the Trigger.js file from the repository into your custom mod folder. Most of the scenarios rely heavily on scripts so make sure to also download the .js files which also go in the maps/scenarios folder containing your scenarios. The scenarios feature more or less typical build and conquer mission, as well as sieges and battles without much building involved. Make sure to read the text in the description of each mission before you play it. Often, there are intelligence reports that can be quite useful. In many cases, there are multiple ways to approach the mission strategically. The AI should be set to Petra, I recommend Medium or Hard difficulty with Balanced option. It's totally fine to play it on easier difficulties as well, especially on the first try. Hope you enjoy! I am definitely looking for feedback -- there may certainly be some bugs or inconsistencies or issues -- please make note and post! I am looking to do a round of updates in about 2 weeks but need to take a break now. If my wife hears the opening music of the game one more time, I'm in trouble UPDATE Nov 2021: - The campaign is now complete with 45 missions, starting with Phillip's rise to power and ending with Alexander's death. Conversion to a25 from a23 is currently underway. UPDATE Oct 2 2020: - Added Missions 16 and 17, covering Alexander's conquest of Tyre. Also made small changes to some scenarios based on feedback from the users. UPDATE July 27 2020: - Added Missions 11-15 covering Alexander's conquest of Asia Minor UPDATE June 19 2020: - fixed some of the winning conditions bugs that were reported - added support for difficulty levels -- switching the AI between Medium, Hard, and Very Hard will now often result in effects beyond gather rate (e.g., more troops garrisoned in enemy towers, better starting teach for enemy, etc.) - Enemy units that spawn and attack now usually march in formation - Added wall towers to fortified cities and settlements I will shortly be posting the next set of five missions. Thanks for all the comments and private messages. And here are some screen shots: UPDATE June 25 2020: Added the next set of 5 missions, comprising Alexander's Balkan Campaign. Features a naval map, new scripts and triggers, and another siege. Enjoy! Some screenshots (minor spoilers): Some screen shots from missions 11-15: Shots from 16 and 17, the conquest of Tyre:1 point

From the topic, you can guess this thread will be heavy. So @Stan` please feel free to lock this thread or ban me if you don't like it. Having been undercover with 20 different accounts over the past 2 alphas, I noticed some persistent issues in the multiplayer lobby (especially TGs). First, let's talk about smurfing. It is in violation of the agreement with Wildfire games to create second accounts without permission, however, many player often spam accounts; in the most extreme cases one person controls 30 accounts and share them with other like minded players. I myself am guilty as charged when it comes to spamming accounts. Why? You may ask. Well, these are the most common motivations for smurfing: 1. They find it funny, creating accounts with joke names or trolling unsuspecting nubs. 2. They regret their old name choice and a much cooler name came to their head after some time. They want to use the cooler name instead. ( This is totally me) 3. Looking for easy wins 4. One of their accounts has been banned or muted. 5. To escape bullying or targeting. 6. To test out new strategies without losing their rating. 7. Because they embarrassed themselves and wanted to assume a new identity. I would like to elaborate on point 5. This is something that only exist in OP TGs, where 1 team has an extremely skilled player and all of the enemies are scared of him. As a solution, the 4 enemies agree to collapse all their troops onto the good player and kill him or annoy him enough to force him to ragequit. The pro player is often placed with 3 nubs for balance, so he can't get much help. The 3 remaining nubs are easy to kill so the game is won. However, from the pro player's perspective, he had no fun at all: it is a 1v4 instead of a team game. In addition, the mechanics of A25 made cavalry extremely speedy and agile, so that they can deal huge damage to the pro player and escape unharmed before the others arrive to help. Furthermore, targeting happens as well. For example, I gained a reputation of having poor defence against cavalry rushes, because I wasn't used to the new mechanics in early A25 after the boom/ turtle A24. But, my boom is very fast and I can field enough units to wipe out any single player in a battle, after the boom. Those who know this, once they play on the opposite team to me, they persuade all of their teammates to rush me at the same time. In early A25 this would have destroyed me. But now, thanks to coaching from Hamdich and berhudar, I am much better and defending myself against rushes in a 1v1. But all of this was useless when 3 players of the opposite team rushed me simultaneously today, even though I was the pocket player! Clearly one of them has convinced the other 3 to do this to me as it is very unnatural to have 3 players all going in on the opposite pocket at the same time. I don't think even the strongest players can defend against 30 cavalry in their base at minute 6 while having to sustain a reasonable boom to support their weak flank player against a much stronger enemy next to him. Surprisingly, I survived the rush today and did boom up eventually, but my flanks had resigned and mighty army of 160 units with cav and champs were crushed by 2v1. This made me write this on the forum to inform the developers and project managers that such issues exist. I am not the only victim of this; anyone above a certain rating has suffered from this before and although it is a strategy, it ruins the game and there is no fun in 4v1 at minute 6. 30 cav at minute 6 is fine in a 1v2 game because your enemy has to sacrifice their eco completely to field this many cavalry so soon, and you will have chance to defend and recover. But this does not happen for a TG. When one retreats the others can take turns to harass and you will never be left alone. Today, each of them only had 10 to 15 cavalry (not much impact on eco) but it added up to 30. The A25 alpha made it very difficult to fight outnumbered so 2v1 3v1 are almost impossible no matter how pro you are. And this is exactly why many good players started smurfing - to escape being bullied by 3v1. They even share accounts and make newbie errors on purpose to make it harder to tell who is playing behind them. I sympathize with these people even though the rules don't allow it. Points 1,2 are fairly obvious and not so malicious. Point 3 raises another alarm: the lobby is very unfriendly to new players, which is why you don't see the leaderboard change often. I will discuss this in the next post. Point 4 is quite obvious... If they don't use profanity again in their new account then fine... The reason I smurf is mainly point 2, occasionally point 5 and 6. Point 7 exists; when some players make a mistake in a TG watched by many spectators, they feel embarrassed to play with them again, but they still like the game. So their solution is to create a new smurf identity and restart their 0ad career until they can redeem themselves in front of the specs.1 point

TBH, I never managed to win on both, except with max resources on Napata, and even then, Gaia often killed my opponent before I did. I admit I'm probably not a very good player, but Danubius is insanely hard in my case. The problem with Gaia attacks is that they never cease. Even if one destroys some of their resources, they have limitless reinforcements. There are maps where it's bearable, like the Gallic land ("Terres gauloises" in French"), but on Danubius, it's simply too difficult for me. IT's bad, because the map is beautiful, and if Gaia was less powerful, it would have been an interesting challenge.1 point

Yes just make sure you don't select too many 1v1 specialists as sometimes people only play in 1v1s but then fail in TGs.1 point

This guy belongs wherever you put camelius. In fact, thats probably where barca is too tbh. There was also a vercingetorix at top3 some point. This plus the concept of having obstruction for actor files makes a good idea. Like it can make the campaign more gameplay and objective focused, no more units running around capturing houses or other buildings, just straight point unit to unit combat or objective targeting of defensive obstacles to the mission1 point

By all means, someone please make the city of Thebes better, just need to keep the same number of defense towers and fortresses to maintain difficulty. There is also the city of Magnesia in Scenario 5 which could be a lot better. Finally Tyre, but I don't think I have converted that one to a25 yet so perhaps later. Generally, my main contribution with this campaign is the code and scripting. I could use help making the maps beautiful.1 point

Some of these are inactive or very rusty. In my opinion the list is as follows: 1. berhudar / felixix (Has beaten Vali and borg and Book.) @felixix 2. ValihrAnt (we all know his OPness) @ValihrAnt 3. vinme (very OP rusher and 1v1 player) @vinme 4. defenderbenny (aka Deathwing-) (veteran player who returned recently with some smurf accounts, I only put him before hamdich because I don't know his exact strength) 5. Hamdich (hugely underrated; OP at rushing and Ptolemies, can smash anyone below him in this list whether you like it or not whether you agree or not) @hamdich 6, 7. LetswaveaBook / weirdJokes (former is stronger in 1v1 and the latter is stronger in TG) @LetswaveaBook @Player of 0AD 8. Choose from list below: Andreassadi - return of an OP rusher Rorrosaar - similar to hamdich but didn't practice enough Roscany - similar to rorrosaar Wendy - Return of an old Pro Rauls - OP boomer and Pusher, also decent at rushing reza-math - OP rusher, 2000 fighting skills but slightly slower boom Filipos - Havran's brother, very strong indeed Havran - OP at booming then P3 Push, also surprises you with a sneaky rush Father (and his smurf accounts) - just strong, likes champions SaidRdz - used to be 1800+ Some smurfs (NoobDude, Anka), dakeyras (if he is still active) @Dizaka (unstoppable merc cav rush). DoctorOrgans / JC / corona-virus (Spartan Brutality) Cl2488 (1v1 player who has beaten me in a 1v1 after a 40 minutes long struggle) ------------------------------------------------------- Feld, Jofur, borg are not active enough; stockfish is a bit rusty (got beaten by me before), but can return to the list if he revises his skills Anyone whom I have beaten directly in a 1v1 or a similar situation is automatically disqualified for the list.1 point

I agree, I think the current soft counters can be embellished a little, but I don't think we need absolute rock-paper-scissors level counters.1 point

@Yekaterina ... the reason I started reusing Akazid (older than Dizaka) is because of nonstop gank hits IG. I know when I play there's a 60% chance of getting rushed. If I'm Mauryas or Carthage 90% of rush and 70% of a double gank. I can guarantee like clockwork even which players will scout map and rush me. For some games it is justifiable (b/c I'm Carthage). I've started to now just play unconventional civs (Seleucids, Kushites, Macedonians) as they keep ganks off me. Additionally, bc of ganking, I'd be great if fog of war could hide terrain inflence, civ anonimity until explored, and player name could be hidden for matches.1 point

Hello, I have been playing for a few years and yet I am not so frustrated. Of course there are some games that are not fun but it's the RTS playstyle that wants that. I always have fun. The ddos I don't know if 0AD can do anything about it but many orthers videos games are affected. 1) I don't know if you take the measure of what you are offering. Making every game count for rank would be counterproductive, people would play games less for fun. There would therefore be fewer games in progress, this could gradually lead to an empty lobby and therefore a dead game in 2 years. I carricature but you get the idea. The scoring system is open to criticism but it is not intended to be infallible, it is just an indicator (up to the players to use it as they want, to trust it or not. It has the merit of creating a small little competitiveness and a ranking sympathetic to the ego of the people). Most of the known hosts themselves estimate the level of the players to balance the games. sometimes it's done well sometimes not, it's impossible to do it all the time. I assume that if the gap is not too large all games can be won. 2) Then most of the smurfs accounts do not pose any problem, but if they are done with an aim to piss off or create bad for others it is a shame. For example, I have 4 accounts, 2 of which are shared with my brother and a friend, we have the same level overall and I always announce my average rating when I do a 1 vs 1 so as not to trap the person by stealing his points. Why am I doing this? No idea, I find it funny, it's less boring to always have the same nickname, people expect less of your strategies or a bunch of other childish reasons lol. It could be interesting to see the date of creation of the account to avoid old players without rating to be considered as smurfs. When I'm on a different account I feel like I'm in a different vibe too. don't ban please1 point
-
Since 75% of the game is played as a team game, a team rating would also help the host to better assess a new player. An algorithm for this would be conceivable. A bit of creativity. We have very good and creative mathematicians in the community. (Yes the todo lists are very long. I do not expect any change in the near future (years). yes I have created little or no source for the game myself. Maybe this will get better one day).1 point

Now onto malpractice in the lobby 1. Spamming. This can vary from spamming any nonsense to profanity. Some hackers are proud of their spamming skills, and they creat sophisticated spams that can temporarily block out the lobby chat or game chat. The most notable examples are 'snow people mountain people' and 'follow the white rabbit'. The spammer may join any game and start spamming so that the player's screen is full of white patterns and they can't see the actual battle anymore. Fortunately this hacker has been inactive for a while. This made many hosts ban specs and makes it less friendly for new players who want to learn from pros. 2. Trolling the bots. Some people repeated ping the ratings bot or wfg bot. 3. Cheating. This can be done in many ways but generally it either involves quickly changing the game from rated to unrated or vice versa before starting or trying to gather enemy information not through scouting but an observer PC . Cheat codes need to be banned.1 point
-
The unwelcoming hosts also explain reason 7 for smurfing. I tried to get my friend to play in TGs and he booms faster than me and will outperform everyone if left undisturbed, so every time the opposite team double rush him. Obviously he will be slow after it. Then people call him cosmic and ban him. In order to get back, he had to create smurf account and regain rating to redeem himself. Most people don't have this perseverance and they quit, which is why 0ad does not have many players.1 point
-
Now let's talke about the second problem with 0AD lobby: it is very unfriendly to new players, for the following reasons: 1. Most team games only allow 'known players' to play. If someone new appears, the host will often displace them from the player slots, or kick them from the game. Sometimes the host will just immediately ban anyone who he has never see before. If a new player asks to play with them, the host will simply respond with 'I don't know you' then keep them as spec or just kick. 2. Smurfs exist and destroy new players before they get a chance to start enjoying. This is less of a problem since good players only want to play with good players. 3. Many quit without resigning. This makes many players underrated and is frustrating. Players with low ratings are never welcome in team games -> they never get a chance to meet the pros -> they can't improve. 4. Profanity. This happens everywhere. Elaborating on point 1, the reason behind the hosts' unwelcoming policy is because they are afraid of unskilled players ( called cosmic noobs) ruining their balance or decreasing the intensity of the game. This is a valid reason, and I was peer pressured into doing this as well. However from the perspective of a new player, they have waited for a decent few minutes in your game, only to be kicked out simply because the host has never seen them before. There is very little chance for new players to integrate into the 'known players' group so there is always a constant if not decreasing number of players. Sadly, the best way to improve is to play with pros in such games, so the chance of a new player becoming good is very slim since A25. This problem did not exist in A23 and I was lucky enough to become 'known' then. Right now it is always the same small group of people playing and they don't accept any new faces. For some hosts, even a player with a very high rating (1700) is kicked simply because the nub host has never seen that 1700 person before, who ironically turns out to be an old player who has joined since A17... Another reason is the host is scared of smurfs who might ruin balance. In some people's minds, new player without rating = smurf and deserve to get banned instantly. Point 3 makes it very hard to get enough points to prove yourself. In order to get recognised, a new player needs to gain at least 1400 points then prove themselves to a 'known player' who is not so stubborn. After that, he needs to join the TG with their 'known player' and the 'known player' has to recommend this new player to the host. Even then, some hosts still refuse. Once they are in the game, the specs will call the new player noob if they make a mistake, then smurf if they play well. The host might ban instantly if there is a smurf accusation. Obviously this is a toxic environment for any new players. So most new players quit soon.1 point

AoE DE is the most that resembles the historical theme. How do you think I felt when I discovered this game in 2004. (the first time I heard about the project). I wanted an AoE that was like Empire Earth, RoN and AoE 2. AoE does not fill that gap of playing with Romans, well represented Romans, not generic soldiers with Greek helmets. With formations, with their enemies, with other civilizations. And the feeling of playing with the factions that we want to design and manufacture. AoE IV So far if it is mediocre, it is only a copy to sell in 3D of AoE 2. You can read those impressions in the comments of the videos in YT. We were looking for a free AoE, without restrictions, without DLC or season passes. Without political correctness (check AoE III DE). Libre without the need to connect to Xbox live. Available for computers and Mac OS X. Even with the potential to be on Android. Only total war has a decent level to have good mods. There is no strategy game that is so open. Tell me a game that have Romans?1 point
-
ChronA I am afraid I cannot agree with you here. I think 0AD is superior to Age of Empires and it is not a clone. The graphics of 0AD is miles ahead of AoE's fixed isometric view and the gridded landscape that does not even allow you to rotate buildings. With 0AD you use your brain in planning the strategy and then immerse yourself in the intense fighting animation and sound effects, unlike AoE's 90s style pixilated I don't know what graphics. The art and landscape models of 0AD are obviously more realistic than what you get in AoE... There are of course similarities between 0AD and AoE as both are RTS games but 0AD has many unique features that AoE don't have. They may have started off as a mod but now it is completely independent of AoE, just like I can't say you are a monkey because you had the same ancestor. How do we know what's good and what's bad if we don't experiment it? After a few games the players will express their views on the forum, then the devs will act accordingly. Being afraid of making a mistake will stop you from progressing forward. Han Chinese has an unique unit composition that fixes some imperfections in other civs and introduces new strategies. For example, if you want to do a spear cav rush followed by an archer push then the Chinese is perfect for you. If you like Kushites but also need catapults then Han is the ideal civ for you!1 point
-
@ChronA I liked your rant. However, I don't think you are quite right. For starters, what @wowgetoffyourcellphone said is very much true, balances breaks every new alpha, regardless of the number of civs. Then, I think you may miss that in FLOSS projects like this one, it's not that doing some work for a certain feature really takes away work from other features, becouse everyone does what they like better. Of course some balance is needed, but this is why this discussion is happening. At the end, it's really up to @Stan`.1 point
-
Thats... an interesting rant. However I don't think reducing the number of civs would change anything. Art, Programming, and Balancing are done with three different types of people. So you're not stealing programmers time by adding more assets (unless they are really crappy assets) Thank you <3 Well sure sure but so will going on steam, or attracting new players. it's not about the civilisation, it's about the game not being finished, and probably never being finished. Well another way to prevent the castle from leaning is getting your hand dirty and making everyone profit from your vision which you just did. Well the han have new dynamic with the ministers. and the balancing team is supposed to work on differentiating the civilization again.1 point
-
m7600 has a point here. You can never fully get the balance right until you let the players test the strength of this civ in competitive matches. After which they will start filing in suggestions / complaints and we can act accordingly.1 point
-
Even if you had plenty of resources it won't be perfect and there is no need for it to be either. If Han is eligible to be added in principle, then just go for it.1 point
-
Here is an improved version of the first post, with better icons by me and @wowgetoffyourcellphone han_china.pyromod Nerfed heavily the minister from 10% to 2% I think I can live with being able to batch all minister at once giving you a bonus. Nobody is contesting that. Initially it didn't happen because it was the best quality mod we had around. Now that there are plenty other mods it's no longer. Else it would have been included long ago. "None" is a plain lie. I've fixed a lot of issues reported by @wolflance and @Ayakashi over the years. Not all sure. I've also fixed some minor things like the market's well. But I've been busy doing everything else. Why can't that be part of not perfect?1 point

They weren't included in A24 for various reasons but I think it's time for A25 even if they are not 100% perfect. There will be more incentive to make them better if they are in the game than if they aren't It might attract artists that are into asian civilizations. It might also attract historian interested in such civs. There is no way it will be ever be balanced properly as a mod. It's cool civ, it's long due. I worked a lot on it too and so did a lot of people. It also breaks the thirteen number of civs :p1 point

Indeed. There are enough similarities between the myths of Deucalion, Noah, Utnapishtim, Atrahasis, and Ziusudra that there is a consensus all these have a common, Mesopotamian, origin. It has even been suggested the "deluge" of the story was a severe flooding of the Euphrates in c. 2900 BC. It is not unusual that myths are borrowed and retold elsewhere; many (possibly most) Greek myths came from the Near East; e.g Adonis is Tammuz/Dumuzid. As for the Bible and Torah, Genesis was probably codified shortly after Cyrus allowed the Jews to return from Babylon to Jerusalem, maybe as a consequence of the construction of the Second Temple, subsidized by Darius, i.e. somewhere around 500 BC. The Mesopotamian versions of the flood myth were written down more than a thousand years earlier and it is highly unlikely the Jews living in Babylon for decades never heard or read the Babylonian version. Anyway, Genesis consists of two different parts, the primeval (Genesis 1-11: creation of the world; Adam and Eve; their descendants; Noah; his descendants, Tower of Babel, etc.) and the ancestral (Genesis 12-50: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob; Joseph and his brothers, the migration into Egypt) history. The latter serves as an introduction to the stories of Moses (Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deutoronomy). Many scholars believe the primeval part of Genesis (1-11) is a later addition to serve as an introduction to the ancestral part of Genesis (12-50). Also, Genesis 1-11 is the result of merging at least two different versions, which explains why this part frequently contradicts itself, e.g.: the first woman is created twice, first simultaneously with the first man (Gen 1:27), later afterwards out of a rib of him when he was sleeping (Gen 2:21-24). (In Medieval times the explanation was that they were two different women, the former, Lilith, considered herself an equal of the man, and was not willing to obey him, therefore God created the latter, Eve, out of Adam, to serve him as an obidient wife.) Noah collects one pair of each animal (Gen 6:19) or seven pairs of all clean animals (Gen 7:2) the deluge lasts 40 days (Gen 7:17) or 150 days (Gen 7:24) Noah releases a raven once (Gen 8:6-7) and (?) a dove thrice (Gen 8:8-13) Anyway, the story of Noah in the Bible actually confirms a Mesopotamian origin of the myth, not vice versa.1 point

Interesting that the other myths "confirm" the Bible's telling, instead of the other way around? Floods are one of the major natural disasters which plagued early mankind, especially since we have the habit of building our dwellings on or near floodplains. It is not surprising that the myths and legends of many ancient peoples include large floods. There's also, as @Sundiata mentions the massive sea level rise after the end of the last glacial period, which contributed to the flooding of the Mediterranean basin and later the Black Sea basin.1 point
