  1. A big change in 0 A.D. Alpha 25 is the reworking of biomes. This is something that’s slightly slipped under the radar in the run up to the launch of the new Alpha, so here is a brief look at some of the changes you can expect to see. Biomes are integral to 0 A.D. They are the visual and physical environment that each game is played within. We all have our favourites – or bogey biomes we dread getting in a random match. They’ve remained largely the same over that last few iterations of 0 A.D. – but Alpha 25 will see them undergo something of a shake-up. What Technically Is A ‘Biome’ In The Context Of 0 A.D? Biomes bring textures and natural objects, such as trees and animal species, together to simulate an environment you would find in the world. Why Are Biomes Different In Alpha 25? 0 A.D. Forum member, modder and contributor, @wowgetoffyourcellphone, has been adding new texture assets to diversify and modify existing biomes in his 0 A.D. expansion mod, Delenda Est, for some time. He has been the driving force in getting these enhancements into the core game, along with assistance from fellow contributor, @maroder. The result of this work will be seen for the first time within Alpha 25. What Will Be The Most Noticeable Differences? New terrains and their biomes will be more coherently put together, as opposed to the more ad-hoc nature that they were added previously. And the new terrains with be of a consistent 2k resolution, incorporating normal and specular maps. Previously, terrains were of varying resolutions and only a few had normal or spec maps. Wow, These Biomes Look Awesome! They sure do! And it’s worth highlighting that all of the new terrains come from sources licensed as Creative Commons CC0 – ‘No Rights Reserved,’ – to show how far CC0 assets have come and that you don’t have to purchase assets in order to make your game look good. What About The New Names? Are These Whole New Environments Or Just The Old Ones Renamed? Some (like temperate) are extensive redresses of old biomes, while others (like India and Nubia) are completely new. More new biomes should be in the works for the following alpha as well. Eventually all the old assets will be superseded by all-new ones.

  3. Introduction. East Asian biomes include the major biological ecosystems that make up the land area of East Asia, specifically China with Taiwan, Mongolia, Japan, and the Korean Peninsula. These vary from northern tundra and boreal to southern tropical and subtropical ecosystems, include several major mountain ranges, and comprise forest ecosystems, grasslands, deserts, and also important wetland systems. One literally outstanding globally unique feature of the region is the Tibetan-Qinghai Plateau, which forms the source of many of Asia’s major rivers and also drives the monsoon climatic patterns of the entire region. The region includes the world’s most populated country, China, and some of the most densely populated areas but also some of the least populated areas of the planet, including Mongolia with the lowest density. The region is unusually rich in both flora and fauna and has many distinctive endemic features and relic species.

  8. Not necessarily a bad idea to support parallel progressive and conservative development paths. I've seen seen that approach helps keep the peace on other projects. But my concerns would be how far "Empires Extended" could really push things while still being tethered to Empires Ascendant by a shared code base, engine, & art assets; and would the conservatives really be open to integrating substantive developments from Empires Extended into their private sandbox? I'm guessing you would eventually still end up in a situation where the two sides want to fork. The progressive will be tired of having to worry about breaking assets that EA depends on, the conservatives of defending their assets from being broken. When that happens, it will end in each party making a power play for design control over the shared engine and art (which would not be good). This might be a case where Wildfire Games could benefit from the example of the Spring Engine and Zero-K. Zero-K is by far the most popular Spring game (AFAIK) and probably drives a lot of its development. However Spring Engine exists for more than just Zero-K and the two are quite clearly separate entities, with Spring supporting several competing TA clones and other games besides Zero-K. The same does not seem to be true of 0AD/EA/Pyrogenesis, which appear to be functionally all one thing. I think Zero-K could survive a fork over design ideology because everyone would have confidence that Spring would not pick sides. Formalizing the progressive/conservative divide in 0AD's dev scene would be a lot safer if Pyrogenesis (the engine) and 0 AD (the art and code libraries) had similar levels of conceptual independence from the game called Empires Ascendant. (Note: I've deliberately avoided looking too much in on Spring/Zero-K development, because I'm occasionally friendly with some of those guys, and avoiding their drama is one way that I stay friendly with them. So if I am off base in my characterization of the Spring dev ecosystem, please pipe up.)

  9. The Iberian faction is very well synthesized with several people who constituted the ancient Iberia . However , following a historical context , the great war that was fought in Iberia were the Lusitanian wars that made Rome tremble. These are the terms in which Strabo refers to the Lusitanians : " The most powerful of the Iberian nations , and among all , longer owned the Roman arms . " - Strabo . So that as with the subdivision of the former " Celtic " faction among : Gauls and Britons. I think it is more justified subdivision between Iberians and Lusitanians . "Those they call Lusitanians are the most valiant of all the Cimbri . " - Diode Siculus . Besides the historical context , reasons abound from the point of ethno - cultural perspective, the Atlantic - western , folk ( Lusitanians , Galaicos and Asturian ) , constituted a civilization itself , which many archaeologists designate " Castrexa " , framed as Proto -Celtic . His way of fighting were very different from Iberians . While the Iberians were generally more peaceful and non- waged guerrilla warfare , leaving siege by the enemy . The Lusitanian constituted mobile military units without the Romans podessem employ their siege tactics ( as they did in Gaul and against Numancia Celtiberian ) . More than that , the Romans persecuted the Lusitanians in surprise attacks and relentlessly . For a Lusitanian there was no greater glory than to die in combat . The Lusitanian weapons were also well above the Romans , so that the Romans tried to copy in vain , his arms the famous Glaudios Hipanienses , yet never managed to reach the Lusitanian excellence. even more terrible was the " Machaera Hispanienses " ( falcata ) : "They make weapons and darts in an admirable Manner ; bury They are plates of iron so long under ground , till the rust hath consumed The Weaker part , and so the rest passe more strong and firm Of this They make Their swords and other warlike . weapons , and with these arms , tempered Thus , They are cut through every thing in Their Way , that neither shield , helmet , nor bone can withstand them " . - Diodor Siculus . The Lusitanians fought on foot and horseback , was his peculiar way of fighting : 2 Lusitanian rode one horse, when confronted with enemies , jumped and fought on foot: " And because They are furnished with two swords , the horse , When They have routed the enemy , alight and join with the foot , and fight to admiration . " - Diode Siculus . The new faction , Lusitanians , could have such a differential in the game , a single horse , mounted with two jinetes , and once in combat units would drop 2 against the opponent .

  11. I am fine with Yaunā, the Old Persian word for Ionians, Macedonians, and Greeks. We have 3 Greek factions and 2 successor states and on top of that the word also refers to Persians. I couldn't be really bothered myself with thinking about a name, but Yaunā seems cool.

  16. Yes and no. You can play around with the lock cull camera option and see that some shadows are rendered outside.
    1 point
  17. The shadow uses a 2D map of a fixed size for a given quality, so the more you render, the less detail you can have. --- I think we should default to "look good by default, even if it's somewhat slower", and so I would vote towards increasing the default distance to e.g. 500/600. Players that have graphics lag will possibly think of turning down settings, but players that don't might not think of turning them up.

  18. My primary concern is that this will make Rome/Mace unable to fight off a camel rush because the chasing spear cav won't be able to do enough damage against fleeing camels. The gif suggests that this patch will be about a 50% nerf in that context. I don't think the patch will be too impactful in other fights. If you don't think that this will render spear cav unable to stop a camel rush then I am fine with the patch.

  22. Here is the 3rd (and it's looking likely, final before proper RCs) testing bundle of A25. Keep in mind, this is not a 'Release Candidate' yet, and so some bugs are to be expected. We provide this in the hope of finding and squashing them efficiently. If you choose to test, please keep that in mind. Downloads - Current bundles are for SVN revision 25782 Linux data and build MacOS Windows Things to note: Translations are not complete & may be buggy -> Play in English for now. Mind your mods -> they might introduce issues or Out Of Sync. Save your A24 config file somewhere, ideally. Notable changes since the last bundle: Yet more map tweaks (though more minor this time around) New loading tips Better metal generation for the 'best for MP' maps, both for 1v1 and 4v4 (where the problem of too little metal should mostly be fixed) Fix for the issue where units would look near their position, not near the order position when the target resource is full Improvement to autoqueue UI -> more obvious what you're doing. Currently known issues: We have reports of issues with the replay filter, but haven't been able to confirm Big screenshots are broken in the game. There are a few others that shouldn't affect play much, see the Milestone for details. What to do if I have an error or notice something weird? Post your commands.txt (replay) and the interestinglog.html file from your folder. You can also reply to this thread. What to do if the game crashes Update your crashlog.dmp and crashlog.txt see https://trac.wildfiregames.com/wiki/GameDataPaths What to do if I have an Out Of Sync? You should go in your logs folder, find the replay (commands.txt at least), the mainlog/interestinglog and find the OOS dump folder. Zip all these files and upload them here. Ideally, you should coordinate with the OOS players so that they upload their own OOS dump, so we can compare them. Things you may want to test (non-exhaustive) Launch a random game Launch a skirmish. Connect to the lobby Play on the lobby with someone Launch Atlas and try things out there Open Unit tests demo (To see if there any breakage in displaying entity's) (It's in scenarios) Enable feedback and see if it works (Main menu) https://videos.pair2jeux.tube/videos/watch/ca45fa29-c120-487e-af9c-cf52020666ab Connect to and use mod.io Test replaying new games Test Screenshots (F2) Test Big Screenshots (Maj+F2) Test hotkeys Test Saving and loading a game. 23. I am trying to create a unit which is capable of both shooting arrows and using swords to hack if the enemy gets close. How would I achieve this? It would be ideal to switch attack type by holding down control. So basically a multipurpose unit that is an archer and a swordsman at the same time.

  24. Well i would to see each spearman have different stats. Hoplites have big aspis which is way better that a whicker shield used by persian spearmen so hoplite pierce armor > sparabara pierce armor for example. So diferent civs would have to take different aproaches to the same scenario. Another example, tarantine skirm cav could also have better pierce armor than numidian or asian skirm cav that use the pelta.

  25. Hello Indeed, that very much was and still is the plan for social media going forward. We've had a monthly announcement going out on the website, echoed in the forums and then echoed on social media since I began co-ordinating this, but the plan is that the social media accounts tick over weekly - either pushing official bits of news or echoing any 0AD related news or features, retweeting 0AD stories, etc. Annoyingly, a lot of this has coincided with my house move, which has been chaos, and all kinds of work and family stuff, so haven't been quite as productive with the social media side of it as I'd hoped, but that is about to change. And just in time for A25 as well, it's a great time for it all to come together. Will have a lot more time to react to ad-hoc SM posts, so absolutely, if anything catches your eye that should be shared, please do DM me

32. Getae could have Horse archer. Paeonian served as light cavalry in the Macedonian army so could be cav (some sources say used javelins, other that they had spears like prodromos); they were one of the most hellenized Thracian tribes so could also get a heavy peltast with Thureos. Additionally i think it would be good to have Celtic Scordisci swordsmen. You could also have Yazyges heavy cavalry (either bow or lance) depending on timeline you want Bastarnae could be a cavalry unit too.

  33. Just personal flavor, I would liked more generic factions (greek and celts) instead of splitting them and then adding some more generic factions like germans and schtyans. It gives you more choices in scenario design for a broader contexts and territory, but as Feneur said, if you don't like it, you can always make a mod (that is the one of the key of 0 a.d). Nice forum udapte

"They use iron spears, swords and helmets and use as the Celtiberians. They use rough black robes made of wool, such as goat hair. Some of them are armed with light shields Gauls, others with Sketon as big as shields and use greaves on his legs made of coarse hair and bronze helmets on their heads, adorned with red feathers. 35. There was been a lot of impressive work on this. Ardworix, your resoluteness is stunning. I for one, am always up for lots of factions, and I think that's why players love AoE II the most out of all the AoE games because it had the most diversity and factions. Makes strategy more interesting. But, for the Lusitanians to become a faction, you will need to come up with a suggestion and ideas for another specific Iberian faction. Just how the Celts were split into Gauls and Britons, the Iberians need to be split into Lusitanians, and a sufficiently different faction for this to work. Great dedication though!

  36. As you already mentioned, Strabo says the Lusitanian is designated Galician. "the most of the Lusitanians are called Callaicans." - Strabo. However the greatest war waged against the Romans in the Iberian designated by the classic historiography, it was designated "Lusitanian Wars", getting the name.

  37. Description of Lusitanians by Diodoro Sículo and Estrabon: Diodoro Sículo: "Those they call Lusitanians are the most valiant of all the Cimbri. These, in, times of war, carry little targets made of bowel strings, so strong and firm, as completely to guard and defend their bodies. In fights they manage these, so nimbly whirling them about here and there, that with a great deal of art they avoid and repel every dart that is cast at them. They use hooked saunians made all of iron, and wear swords and helmets like to those of the Celtiberians.: They wear black rough cassocks made of wool, like to goat's hair. Some of them are armed with the Gaulish light shields, others with bucklers as big as shields, and wear greaves about their legs made of rough hair, and brazen helmets upon their heads, adorned with red plumes. They carry two-edged swords exactly tempered with steel, and have daggers beside, of a span long, which they make use of in close fights. They make weapons and darts in an admirable manner; for they bury plates of iron so long under ground, till the rust hath consumed the weaker part, and so the rest becomes more strong and firm. Of this they make their swords and other warlike weapons; and with these arms, thus tempered, they so cut through every thing in their way, that neither shield, helmet, nor bone can withstand them. And because they are furnished with two swords, the horse, when they have routed the enemy, alight and join with the foot, and fight to admiration. They throw their darts at a great distance, and yet are sure to hit their mark, and wound deeply: being of active and nimble bodies, they can easily fly from, or pursue their enemy, as there is occasion : but when they are under hardships, they cannot endure near so much as the Celtiberians." Estrabon: " [...] the Lusitanians, it is said, are given to laying ambush, given to spying out, are quick, nimble, and good at deploying troops. They have a small shield two feet in diameter, concave in front, and suspended from the shoulder by means of thongs (for it has neither arm-rings nor handles). Besides these shields they have a dirk or a butcher's-knife. Most of them wear linen cuirasses; a few wear chain-wrought cuirasses and helmets with three crests, but the rest wear helmets made of sinews. The foot-soldiers wear greaves also, and each soldier has several javelins; All the men dress in black, for the most part in coarse cloaks, in which they sleep, on their beds of litter."

I beg your pardon what does 'not in the mask' mean? The bucula is not shown in the image? So we have to add it to the helmet's 3D model? (once we model it) About the Suevi, they reached only to the end of the Roman Empire from 409 to 585 After Christ, is a historical period long after the "Lusitanian Wars". About mask (buccula), would have to attach to the helmet.

  42. Okay, I forgot essential information to prevent confusion: The special information I demanded + the culture group concerns are not of importance for you and your Lusitanian 500..1BCE faction (0AD timeframe). It fits the 0AD scheme of a pitched battle of the most evolved or involved civilizations perfectly. So don't worry. (the worries of culture group + peak time + .. I will clarify and are only relevant for another project I am working on which is more like a time machine. For now this is not relevant as I have to soften the civilization tagging anyway.). Next step for the Lusitanian faction to come alive and get playable ingame is by researching more concepts + references and to find a unique scheme for their buildings and units which is consistent and nevertheless historical accurate. That's a hard nut. Once we have the identity, I can start modeling. https://github.com/0ADMods/Lusitanians

  44. Good drive towards a new faction. For the horse-two-swords simulation I think that trampling effect is thought for that. (it could be done via Aura.. but it's planned to be more physics-like .. but not full physics engine). Yet the idea of the multiple riders is no bad. It would of course look a bit strange if they don't point individually to different enemenies/sides .. but we could live with it. And also we could replace the horse + 2 soldiers ontop with a horse + 2 soldiers aside. Other than that state trasition animations were what I dream of. But this is music of far away cultures.
