  2. One particular thing which concerns me in this game is the balance of trading, and the international bonus. I would really wish for trading to be viable in 1v1 games but as things stand, if trading was balanced in 1v1 it would be OP in team games and if it was balanced in team games, it would be almost useless in 1v1s. That is because of both the international bonus and the map size, but particularly the international bonus. My feeling is that therefore the international bonus, although a nice touch of realism, kinda hurts gameplay. Also Carthaginians have international trade as a civ bonus and are also hurt by that. One solution I precedently thought of was to simply have a bonus for all trade when game settings don't reliably allow for international trade, for example in 1v1s on in no diplomacy FFAs. However this solution looks a bit unintuitive. But recently I saw that AoE4 has this thing called the Trade Post: So we could have neutral trade posts spawn in maps, and have international trade bonus apply to them. We could have other bonuses, for example technologies becoming available in a trade post when enough trade has been done with it, or perhaps training mercenaries. There could be an additionnal bonus for traders which relay 2 trade posts, instead of a player market and a trade post. Also as a consequence, trade routes would not necessarily be in the back, so this also puts more importance to territory and map control.

  3. Github repo: https://github.com/Mare-Nostrum-0AD/popup_choices Zipfile: popup_choices.1.zip Hey everyone! Here's a new feature I've been planning to create for a while. It allows Scenario designers to include "popup choice" menus in their trigger scripts. These popup choice menus can have up to three buttons, with each button (optionally) triggering a function when it is clicked. This allows you to create scenarios with storylines and more interesting scripted events, and also to display information to the player during gameplay (i.e. a "Historical Background" blurb at the beginning of the scenario). The instructions for how to use this are contained in the README.md of the github repo and zipfile I linked to above. I included an example script at maps/scenarios/demo_popup_choices_triggers.js. To try out the scenario, go to the Scenario selection menu, filter by Demo maps, and look for DEMO: Popup Choices. You'll have to know at least a little JavaScript to use this feature, of course. I know a lot of you here aren't coders, so I'll try to build a "template" scenario script and a library of functions for simple use cases to make this as accessible as possible to everyone. I'm also willing to help people build their scenarios, as long as it's just a small or medium sized project. I'm also including this feature in my other mod, Mare Nostrum, from now on. I hope y'all can make some interesting scenarios with this!

  4. The trade mechanics of AoE3 is pretty different. There is a route along which NPC traders travel. Depending on the upgrade, from stagecoach to locomotives. You have to build trade posts along the route in slots and when the trader reaches it, resources will be deposited. Somewhat hard to get right in random maps in a balanced way. It's a forced mechanic in AoE3, but some years ago, I thought of making specific maps with that gimmick using triggers. The proof of concept is here.

  6. This has got to be the most polished release ever The last two months seemed like a bit of a pain for the devs (lurking bugs jumping at them from the forums, trac and several other places), but many have been fixed and the effort will pay off for sure. I think the new workflow with the preview releases is a great change.

  9. The wait is almost over! 0 A.D. Alpha 25 “Yaunã," will officially be released tomorrow, Sunday 8th August 2021. The release of various versions and distributions will be staggered throughout the course of the day and the official release announcement will appear on the main 0 A.D. website and then echoed out through the 0AD forum and social media channels shortly afterwards. play0ad.com/ *Be aware, some distributions may not be available immediately, full release may occur over the subsequent days.*

  12. The fact that the current climate change is caused by humans is also supported by Earth Sciences. I mean, CO2 is known for a long time as an important driver of Earth's climate: (this is geologist Richard Alley invited at the National Academy of Sciences (US) for a presentation)

  13. I don't understand the point with the middle man; I also don't understand why you say Carthaginians are hurt by international trade. I think it's historically correct that trading internationally is stimulating trade, if only because other regions have stuff not available domestically.

  14. Just a minor thing (and maybe not appropriate to mention here?): Can we please keep the possibility to show something with the torch on the minimap also after a game has ended? We always want to point out to each other some exciting spot after the game's end but cannot, because the torch-on-minimap function is then not available anymore. Should I open an extra thread for this or add it to some kind of "ideas" list for future versions? If yes, can you please indicate where? Thank you! Besides, I would like to express my sincerest thanks to the developers, contributors, people testing, and the community that make this game so wonderful! We have not experienced any OOS with the latest version (playing with 3 humans and 1 AI on local network/3 PCs).

  18. (In DE priests can capture buildings) It at least prevents the phenomenon where if you have a priest in your selection and you tell them all to go capture a building the priest just stands around to get massacred by enemy defensive arrows. If they can capture too, it makes them a part of the action and at least makes the damage worth it.

  19. Thanks to @Stan` and everyone else on the team for taking the time to have so many release candidates and for addressing concerns. I think a long "feature freeze" is the way to go and I'm sure the team will have conversations moving forward about whether future releases should be the same way. Of course it can be streamlined (this 1-2 month freeze likely wasn't planned to be that way, I'm sure). But I think in the end it produced a better product and the team should be happy with what they've accomplished. Next time can be more streamlined and planned with lessons learned from the last release cycle and the results can be even better.

  25. Of course there's not one source of all evil (assuming there isn't actually a cabal of lizards or whatever controlling everything). But it's not like there are no boogeymen. If companies know their business model is ruining the planet and still lobby, lie and bribe to keep it going, I consider that evil. The same is true for the politicians playing along, of course. Our current Wirtschaftsminister (~Minister for Economic Affairs) has effectively shot down our domestic wind and solar industry while being very friendly towards the coal companies. With rampant corruption I'm sure he's not just an idiot but will profit from that financially.

  26. I like it. Isn't it strange that they decided to "come back" somehow, from the more realistic trade routes of AoE 3? I liked that concept better.

  27. This is part of the problem. You can't point to a boogeyman as the source of all evil when the point and purpose of it all stems from your demands and the incentive to fulfill it. Rampant consumerism demands more, and opportunists will cater to every demand. No one burns oil for the sake of burning oil and no one cuts down trees for the sake of cutting down trees. Big oil was big oil because people want cars and lights. Why did Pennsylvania oil became a necessity in the first place and why did it become so big to the point of building entire nations from scratch. Most green house emissions are done in the name of consumers. 15% of emissions causing climate change are solely due to our desire to eat meat. Don't get me wrong, I am personally part of the problem and will not go vegan to save the planet and I doubt most would do so. That same line of thinking dominates all corners of rampant consumerism. But if it helps us sleep at night, sure, let's clear our hands off blame and point at someone else instead.

  30. GitHub wants all users to start using a personal access token rather than a password to authenticate. The "brownout" is a temporary insistence (a few days) on setting up a personal access token so that folks can do it before they insist on it forever after August 13th. How to set up a personal access token: https://docs.github.com/en/github/authenticating-to-github/keeping-your-account-and-data-secure/creating-a-personal-access-token GitHub announcement with August 13th deadline: "Beginning August 13, 2021, we will no longer accept account passwords when authenticating Git operations on GitHub.com." https://github.blog/2020-12-15-token-authentication-requirements-for-git-operations/ Cordially, Jski

  35. Hey folks, so I was a bit erratic in my presence here because I'm juggling jobs and gigs. For the time being I'm not able to continue the suebians building set. However I hope that the blend file was clear enough for anyone to pick it up. If you have question, I can always answer. I doubt that it's the first time that something like that happens, but hope to be able to come back.

  36. Auto-Queue is an ability of a building to loop through production queue indefinitely as long as resources and population limits permit it. So instead of training units repeatedly, you can simply set the queue once and set the building to auto-queue. If you played Age of Mythology you probably have used this features. In Rise of Nations it's called Infinite Queue. I have searched through the forum in case this topic has been discussed before, but I can't find any. So I decided to make a small mod to demonstrate this feature, inspired mostly from RoN's infinite queue. I attached the mod below (also accessible from GitHub). Here is the screenshot of 0 A.D (Alpha 24b release) using Auto-Queue mod. The button is accessible in middle panel at the bottom (command section, beside delete and rally point button). When the button is toggled on, units in queue will be indefinitely looped. It doesn't work with technologies as they are one time only. I know that auto-queue is generally considered as a rather controversial feature in RTS, as it is reducing micro but also can be dangerous if left unattended. I personally think that 0 A.D. vision is to reduce repetitive actions, so this feature is a must. What do you think about adding auto-queuing in 0 A.D? 0AD-Auto-Queue.zip
