  1. I'm learning to sculpt by myself, then I'll take a tutorial so I can help Alexander with some models and textures.

  5. 1. Here is the standard background I use: 2. Taking a screenshot of the unit in Atlas with the "Big Screenshot" option, it looks like this (note, I use a custom scenario map with a bright ground texture for ease of cutting in Photoshop) 3. A. I cut the unit out of the background, B. copy the unit into a 2nd layer (this is important), C. resize it to 256x256, D. then add the background texture at the top of this tutorial. E. From there I adjust the Layer Styles (effects) of each of the unit layers to give the final product. This is what the file looks like for me: 4. These are the layer settings I use. First, to get that nice brownish background glow (THIS IS WHAT IS MISSING FROM MANY OF THE NEWER PORTRAITS IN THE GAME): 5. Here, I create the drop shadow effect: 6. Sometimes I add a subtle Bevel and Emboss to help the unit stand out a bit from the background. THIS IS SUBTLE, and usually used on a unit with dark edges, like dark hair or a dark horse. Sometimes I don't even use it. As an example, I used this effect to make the Balearic Slinger's head stand out a bit more, otherwise it would have blended into the drop shadow. 5. Here is the final product: Further Examples: unit_portrait.psd

  7. Free Empire unit roster: - Peasant (worker) - Peasant Militia (spearman) - Peasant Archer (archer) - Halfling (scout) - Sword Soldier (swordsman) - Spear Soldier (spearman) - Mace Soldier (maceman) - Crossbowman (archer) - Marksman (rifleman) - Imperial General (hero) - Foot Knight (swordsman) - Imperial Guard (spearman) - Huntsman (archer) - War Hound (creature) - Imperial Cavalry (sword cavalry) - Imperial Knight (spear cavalry) - Gatling Gun (artillery) - Imperial Cannon (artillery) - Steam Tank (artillery) - War Wagon (chariot) - TODDY!!! (special character) With the move to custom skeletons the units won't have animations for a while. I'm also still using the vanilla models for horses, dogs and other animals because I haven't made my own ones yet.

  9. Hello. So I've been aware of 0 A.D. for a few years thanks to the Hyrule Conquest mod and I recently decided to try creating my own fantasy based mod. Since I have basically no experience with 3D modelling, my units rather simplistic looking and so i decided to call this project DerpHammer, in nod to Warhammer Fantasy as that will be a major inspiration for the various factions. I was able to put my regular human units onto the regular 0 A.D. skeletons, but I'm having trouble doing the same with units that are smaller or taller then a human. I also don't really understand how attachpoints work and was hoping to get some advice on that too. Here's a collection of units I modelled so far to give you an idea of the artstyle and size differences: As you can see, the humans have weapons and poses but everything else is still static.

  10. Could we scale them up in-game? They seem a little small to me. That way we could do cool things like have 2 or 3 dudes in a howdah.

  14. Ambiental Sound is almost totally absent for me. Some sounds than would could be there: Sound of the Animal Sounds of the Animals in game are weak, and there are only when an animal is produced or clicked. Would be beautifull hear an yowl, chirping's bird, locusts sounds or eagle sound, when you're playing, so to give more intensity to the player. Vegetation Sound In general forest sound is absent, there isn't leaf sound, and there isn't wind sound in all ambients. Water Sound There aren't waves sounds, there isn't rain sound and the same are for waterfalls. Obviously I'm not saying that this game is totally broken (for an free game in alpha version, is a good game), but for me, players doesn't immerse totally in the game.

  17. Here are more pictures from Wikimedia Commons, to highlight the differences between elephant subspecies. First the African bush or savanna elephant (Loxodonta africana); note the pronounced curve of the back, the large, triangular ears, and the curved, forward-pointing tusks: Then there is the African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis); notice the more level back, the rounder ears, and the straight, downward-pointing tusks: Next the Indian elephant (Elephas maximus indicus); you can see it has a round back, a more dome-like skull, much smaller ears, and a trunk with only one “finger”; also, females don't have tusks: The Sri Lanka elephant (Elephas maximus maximus) is largely similar, but darker of skin: Finally, the Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus):

  20. You know what, @eae? If you don't have anything reasonable to bring to the discussion, you better just stop contributing. You are quoting what I said in response to you but not include the original point I was responding to. So am I supposed to go find it myself in order to understand your short answers? I'm not going to do the extra work for you when you don't even feel like going through what had been said by others. The key point remains that you are talking about some assumptions people supposedly made. I asked you who made those assumptions according to your observations. What is the reason why you didn't quote this specifically important question of mine and provide the required information? When I proceeded to explain why it wasn't wrong to make some of those assumptions anyway, you come back re-framing specifically those as your observations. Well, great job taking the credit for my work. You aren't being smart by responding to my assumptions with "this is an assumption" either. I supply a reason why I state something (even if you decide to leave it out of the quotation), which is the opposite of what you've been doing. Like it or not, the reasons I provide are not always exact data. I sure could provide the data in some cases, but it's enough for the purpose of this discussion if I can prove my credibility regarding a topic and state my opinion, or just roughly state what I base my opinion on. By quoting a price, I'm demonstrating how strong I believe my statement. When another credible person has a completely different option, which is unlikely to happen, we'll have to work with the real data we have. I'm not going to do this for you here now because your contribution has been of little value and it would be a waste of my time.

  23. "like now" probably not. Northern Sahara knows an increasing trend of desertification that is due from a very long term change itself due to global and regional climate changes as you pointed out with the cycle of humid and dry periods, however the trend is still going. Furthermore, the rise of pastoralism accelerated the trend of desertification up to the modern period when a more productive agriculture started with the colonization. This further accelerated the desertification. Anyway I wasn't suggesting the elephants were everywhere in Northern Sahara. It is simply that a huge number of ecosystems were connected during the African Humid Period, with steppes, lakes and forests. Since this period ended between 4000 and 3000 BC, there was indeed a rapid change in the Sahara transforming the landscape in a desert but they were actually still remaining ecosystems in the margins at the end of the bronze age. Notably in West Africa where the change is less abrupt and close to the Tibesti mountains like in the case of the Lake Yoa. It took millennia for these ecosystems to completely collapse. So I have personally the hypothesis that elephants were still present in remaining pockets of these ecosystems during Hellenistic times (like the Atlas mountains woodland at the foothills but not only). Maybe these elephants are simply smaller because of insular dwarfism.

  25. That's pretty close. The only difference I see is that my example has some intentional dithering/noise in the background glow, while yours is a smooth gradient. In step 4 you'll see the noise slider is set to 30% on the orange glow. It makes the background have a bit of grain to it and looks a bit less photoshoppy than a 100% smooth gradient.

  29. @Boudica my key point was to provoke thought, not to point fingers at people. Let people try events and improve. In responses to my intial message, you bring little value to the discussion and do various rhetoric such as pointless question. You are also trying to discredit me with false accusations. I keep note that you admit making no effort to read previous message and that you prioritise your beliefs over data, facts and arguments. You are not proving your credibility at all. (A detail: I used the quote button and my original quotes were skipped each time. Hopefully the original one is still unmodified above in the thread.) The bet thing is a relevant point. Let's say you consider T1 is the "strongest" team and T2 the "weakest" team and you bet 1000$ on T1. If T2 wins, you lose 1000$. If T1 wins, what is your net profit? I am also asking this question to @MarcusAureliu#s
