Speaking of which, I recommend: Lionel Casson The Periplus Maris Erythraei : text with introduction, translation, and commentary (Princeton 1989) The Periplus is an unique text, written between AD 40 and 70 in a matter-of-fact style by an experienced Egyptian Greek merchant who evidently sailed himself to the East African coast, Arabia, and Western India. What I find particularly interesting are the points where his account, of the early Roman period, differs from the descriptions of the major geographers (Diodorus Siculus, Strabo, Pliny), which reflect the situation in Ptolemaic times. Casson's book contains a wealth of information, is reliable, and worth a read.2 points

Yeah, something like that. Swahili, but without the fancy domes. For the record though, the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea already indicates a relationship between the Swahili Coast (named "Azania" in classical sources, and Southern Arabia, as early as the 1st century AD. Of course, it would have been very different from the later muslim Arabia and classical Swahili culture, but still worth a note.2 points

Hello everybody, First of all, I wanted to thank the developers and contributors for this game since this is my first message on the forum. Me and my friend have been enjoying playing this game from time to time, and it's always a bunch of fun. On to my suggestion then. While playing a LAN game with my friend the other day, we noticed there were no sound notification when a supply block occurs, nor is there when you try to produce an unit without the required amount of available supply. I just checked and the only signal that indicates that you must construct additional pylons houses is the flashing counter of supply, which in my opinion is not very noticeable on the screen. This is something you notice relatively fast, but it can make one lose some precious seconds. Having playing quite a few hours of RTS, I noticed that even such a notification on supply block, as annoying as it can get, barely even prevent you from getting supply blocked eventually. And without such sound, it's even worse :p I have been looking in the settings and I did not notice anything that could fix this. However I am not an expert of the game nor did I read the planned improvements, so it is possible that I missed a tick box or something, in which case I would be glad to be shown the relevant option. I also made 2-3 searches on the forum but I did not see similar suggestions. (If such a post / suggestion already exists, well sorry) I would be pleased to hear your thoughts on this feature. In my opinion, this is a really important feature for a RTS such as 0 A.D. What do you think ? Version of the game : v0.23 (build 21935 - 2018-08-23) - Language : French2 points

It's true that "civ" or "civilization" (Greeks) is a broader term than faction (Athenians). But we tend to use them interchangeably here.2 points

Hello. So I've been aware of 0 A.D. for a few years thanks to the Hyrule Conquest mod and I recently decided to try creating my own fantasy based mod. Since I have basically no experience with 3D modelling, my units rather simplistic looking and so i decided to call this project DerpHammer, in nod to Warhammer Fantasy as that will be a major inspiration for the various factions. I was able to put my regular human units onto the regular 0 A.D. skeletons, but I'm having trouble doing the same with units that are smaller or taller then a human. I also don't really understand how attachpoints work and was hoping to get some advice on that too. Here's a collection of units I modelled so far to give you an idea of the artstyle and size differences: As you can see, the humans have weapons and poses but everything else is still static.1 point

I made a build of community_maps that checks for compatibility between versions while allowing for vanilla usage (no greyed-out lobby). It's made with this patch: https://github.com/cwrtl/community_maps/pull/1 Unfortunately, it's not compatible with current version on mod.io (0.0.7) since the most recent version (the one I built from) is 0.0.11 and I didn't check for compatibility between these versions. I might revisit and make another build with backport for 0.0.7. community_maps.pyromod1 point

I was thinking of making a 300 Spartans mod if folks would like to help. Two versions, one compatible with Empires Ascendant and one for Delenda Est, Alpha 24. They'll use the same Spartan building set as the more realistic versions in the base game. We'll mostly replace the units with versions that look like they're from the films 300 and 300:Rise of an Empire. If we want to, we can do the same for the Athenians and Persians as well to make a well-rounded mod. GitHub repository (SVN compatible only; Alpha 24) https://github.com/JustusAvramenko/300 I want to gauge interest from fellow modders and artists before I proceed. I don't want to do this one alone, since I have hands full keeping DE up to date. It'll need textures, models (props and units), and animations (to mimic the kung fu-esque combat of the films). Preliminary ideas: Stats should exhibit extremes. For example, all Spartan units are trained at the elite or champion level, but are super expensive; all Persian units (except the Immortals Ninjas and heroes), only exist at Basic rank and are super cheap. The Athenians are in between these extremes. Spartans Units Spartan Villager Spartan Hoplite (Elite) Spartan Swordsman (Elite) Spartan Skirmisher (Elite) Spartan Horseman (Elite) Royal Guard Spartan (Champion) Heroes: King Leonidas Queen Gorgo Captain Artemis Lieutenant Stelios Dilios Persian Units Persian Slave Persian Spearman (Basic) Persian Swordsman (Basic) Persian Archer (Basic) Persian Horseman (Basic) War Elephant (Champion) War Rhino (Champion) Persian Magician (Champion) Throws explosives Immortal (Champion) Über Immortal (Champion+) Heroes: King Darius King Xerxes Admiral Artemisia General Bandari General Artaphernes Persian Emissary Athenians Athenian Citizen Athenian Hoplite Athenian Swordsman Athenian Archer Athenian Horseman Athenian Marine (Champion) Heroes: Themistocles, Scyllias, Aeschylus Possible Map Creeps and Atlas units Ephialtes (roams the map and if you capture him he allows you to use the Spies feature) Oracle (dances around; capture her and your units gain extra vision range) Ephor Daxos (perhaps capturing him can grant you some free Arcadian soldiers) Theron Executioner (the dude with scythe arms)1 point

You need to build the game by yourself. https://trac.wildfiregames.com/wiki/BuildInstructions https://trac.wildfiregames.com/wiki/BuildInstructionsGettingTheCode You should also install this patch https://code.wildfiregames.com/D2726 If you want to play A23b (revision r21946), you need this patch too https://code.wildfiregames.com/D23531 point

Perhaps the author meant a dark red shade ? Latin colors names can be a bit confusing (Like the discussion on Augustus' hair color), it seems that the snails could also produce a variety red or blue hues not just purple. This is a depiction of a festival with men wearing the toga praetexta; described by ancient authors as having a purple stripe (Looks like red for modern eyes):1 point

Part of the problem with "fancier" selection shapes is that you tend to have to use a larger footprint size for the fancy texture to stand out and be seen. Now, in other games this isn't a problem, but with 0ad footprint does double duty as the entity's combat hitbox. I found this out when I did my tests for a super fancy selection ring for the temple, to show its faith healing range. Every projectile that fell within the radius of that footprint registered as a hit on the temple. I had to remove the awesome fancy footprint texture as a consequence.1 point

For DE i think the planned Theban wonder is the Cadmeia. What do you think of the sanctuary at Dodona as a future Epirote wonder ? Map of the sanctuary as it developed until roman times: Bouleterion: The Oracle:1 point

For the new southern Africa map, it might be interesting to feature Rhapta as a neutral city (Using Kushite architecture as a placeholder) you can trade with and potentially capture. Also was Madagascar inhabited by that time ? Some sources say it was settled in 200 b.c but i am not sure if it that information is accurate1 point

I'd vote for Palace at Pella. It's 100% Macedonian and not peripheral. Similar to why we want to take the Hanging Gardens from the Persians and give them something more Achaemenid (my vote here is for the Gate of All Nations). I'd love for the core game to ship with a bunch of famous ancient buildings, even if they aren't factional wonders. Altar of Pergamon would be awesome to have. Could even eventually have a "Capture the Wonder" game mode that includes these extra wonders in the game.1 point

Again, the statue hasn't survived, nor any copies we know of for certain, so we can only guess. Fundamentally there are three broad categories (images taken from Wikimedia Commons): basically Athena Parthenos with a spear: a ready Athena: an actively fighting Athena: While I think the third is the one most deserving the “Promachos” epithet, it's too different from other statues of Phidias. For the first it's the other way around. The second one is in my opinion the most likely, therefore I'd strongly recommend going that route.1 point

Hey guys. This is an update of my current Athena statue project. As you can see, this is not a highly detailed model yet. I've been trying to set proportions and posing right first. Additionally, I'd like to know your opinion on having the goddess using her right hand to hold a spear instead of a nike. I personally find it more appealing with the spear. A nike would probably need an additional column to support her hand as in the Athena Varvakeion statue. As I mentioned in previous post, there's no way to know how exactly how this statue looked like. One of the few things we know is that the tip of the spear and the crest of the helmet were seen from far away. I think the concept presented in the pictures bellow would fit with this description . In any case, It's up to you. I just want to make sure I'm in sync with what you all want.1 point

Yes. Based on the sanctuary found in Corent. Another sanctuary similar has been found in Tintignac as well. It is possible to slightly modify the building from the reference. It only needs to keep the essence of the building. By the way @Stan` I don't know if it can be useful for you, but here a few pictures from painted ceramics found in Auvergne during this time period (end of La Tène).1 point
