  1. As part of the Pr and Social Media work I'm doing for 0AD at the moment, I got the keys to 0AD's Twitter account. It's been suggested that I tweet at Youtube's Twitter account to highlight the vanishing of 0AD from Youtube's gaming section - will be good to do that from the 'Big Dawg' account! I'll let you know if they reply.

  2. Hmm, champion units are already at your militairy service and instead of getting paid, they pay taxes. Citizen soldiers spent all day chopping wood and give all wood they chop to their overlord and in addition to that they are expected to pay taxes. I knew there should have been some cruel tyrants though... If this game was like the stronghold series, where peasants would spawn for free, eat your food, drink your beer and pray at your churches then taxes would be justified.

  3. Probably yeah . Need to fix the normal too. It'#s some texture work. It's just not my strong suit. @LordGood or @Enrique could probably do it single handedly The bixie will stay as long as we don't have a proper replacement. Removing them is not an option for me.

  4. Greetings all Wasn't sure where best to post this, but as it's an art related request, i thought here might be quite good So, I'm now responsible for some of the PR and Social media posting from official 0AD platforms. I'm trying to ensure that regular comms are going to be posted on the mainstream SM channels and while I'm doing okay for the actual written content, to properly engage it's pretty much standard these days to have an eye catching bit of imagery to head up the post, especially on Insta. As anyone whose seen my thumbnails on the videos on my Youtube channel will testify, while my take on graphics is sometimes amusing, it's probably not what is called for here! So I thought I'd throw it out to you guys to see if anyone can assist. Essentially we will be having a monthly news item on the official 0aD website, and elements of that will be echoed or linked to on each of the social media platforms, so I need a lead image for the website article that can be branded up and resized if required. I think a sensible resolution shot of something cool within the gameplay would probably be enough, just something representative of the game, not too bothered about biome, etc, maybe some of the good looking vistas and landscapes, maybe some cool looking close quarter combat. Images may get used more than once, or possibly cut into sliced montages to get a bit more mileage out of them - there will probably be more demand for these stock images as the number of SM postings increases (ultimately hoping to do one major announcement a month and smaller ones every week) If anyone wants to be involved or has any images to donate, just drop me a DM. Many thanks Jim

  7. Clay? No, rammed earth is a fundamentally different technique than mud brick or adobe. I vaguely recall discussing that in the other thread. The existing structures are not really representative for the Tang dynasty (AD 618–907) either, however, historical accuracy is less important for mods, so feel free to (re)use them in Millennium A.D. Here's a suggestion for an appropiate wonder, the (fired-brick) Giant Wild Goose Pagoda in Xi'an:

  14. First, the password feature for games to protect host IP addresses == winner. From my perspective, DDOS has dropped off substantially and the person (whoever it is) doesn't do it as the entry point has been raised. Many thanks to @Angen and whoever else implemented this. You can see this feature's effectiveness by logging in late at night and, usually, mostly PW protected games are up. Other games likely have been bumped. Second, there are two additional features that would help augment the effectiveness of password protected games: Private messages between users in the game lobby, and/or (credit to @user1) Allowing users to temporarily put the PW in the game name/title and make it disappear once a game is hosted. (Someone mentioned this to me, forgot who) Ideally, it would be best to allow for "private messages between users in the game lobby." This would be an amazing feature. Something like "/msg Obi, hi, pw is abracadabra". This would allow for users to share passwords with specific users when requested. The added benefit to this is that the community can somewhat self-moderate by not escalating DDOS issues to moderators. Specifically, DDOS is hard to prove (can be proven currently with the PW) but most users cannot prove or show evidence of proving it. To "allows users to temporality put the PW in the game name/title and make it disappear once a game is hosted" would dramatically help at the current state. Specifically, to protect from DDOS currently games get hosted with titles such as "XYZ's game (TG)" where TG is the PW. This protects the host's IP from the lobby. However, this does not protect the game from DDOS as the DDOSer is able to join the hosted game to obtain the IP address. Accordingly, after "XYZ's game (TG)" starts the game could be renamed to "XYZ's game" in lobby thereby removing the PW and making it not possible for the DDOS person to affect the hosting player. I forgot who suggested this idea but it is, in my opinion, a good idea. (Note: You could have a checkbox for "Public PW Announcement" when entering game PW) @aixo @Palaiogos @letsplay0ad @PistolPete @chrstgtr @badosu @Cesar

  17. I like the idea that you come with suggestions as the buildings really help to make civilization unique. I have to would like to see the change for the Cothon. The pillar of akhoska seems fairly situational anyway For the Lighthouse I think it is enough to give them speed only for merchant and fishing ships. For military ships it might be to much. For the Theatron my suggestion is: Reduce stone cost to 200, make them available in p2 and give them territory root. I once opened a tread on the apartment building and trying out the polling system. However that suggestion was disliked without giving any explanation in the comment of the dislikes.

We can't be sure, but probably halfway in size between the Macedonian pelte phalangite shield and the "hoplite" aspis (to show a progression; larger to smaller; Hoplite aspis -> Iphicratean pelta -> Macedonian pelta). The model can also be used for Tarantine and other Hellenistic cavalry. @Nescio is free to disagree.

  20. A sample of examples of Bixies from the Eastern and Western Han periods: https://www.comuseum.com/arts/han-jade-bixie/ http://www.alaintruong.com/archives/2020/10/05/38572290.html Keep em. They are an excellent eye candy piece and a nice cultural element not without some historical justification. Honestly, I feel the same way about the lanterns (DE will be keeping them), but the bixies are more justifiable.

  24. A change in texture will be easy (I tested it here just to see the concept). Eliminate the lanterns too, however it will have to be in the blender. I don't see many problems in the current towers. In my view, the greatest difficulty will be in the new walls. If nobody has done it yet, I can eliminate the lanterns from the structures and upload the changes to the github, one less job so that I can work more seriously on the structures.

  27. Ideas proposals to make it more "realistic" : Taxes : Every unit gives a metal trickle. Food consumption : Every unit cost food (negative food trickle) -> once you reach 0 food your unit start to die. (inspired by "Cossacks"/"American Conquest") Every unit are train as simple citizen, In order to get soldier you have to send your unit to your barracks to get equipement and military training. In other word training a soldier cost a citizen. (inspired by "Cossacks"/"American Conquest")

  28. Have a look at this thread. Stone walls, paper lanterns, and Qing dragon flags are some of the things the Han shouldn't have: 0 A.D. is not a Disney film. Perhaps you could start with designing a new fortress or new towers?

  31. In multiplayer players can hit CTRL+TAB to view summary for current scores quickly. I think the only time it would be useful is in quick scrimmages early on when being rushed. At that point populations are <100 generally. For multiplayer would it be possible to force the same corpse setting for all players playing? From reading this thread 100 seems like a sweet spot.

  32. The theory, as I understand it, is that someone is using a program to scan the games in the lobby, which provides the DDOSer with the host's IP. Once the DDOSer has a host's IP, he/she can make DDOS attacks. By protecting the game with a password, the scanning program cannot obtain the host's IP. So no what you propose is not possible.

  33. I don't really see the issue myself. Costs can always be adjusted to compensate for that.

  34. I like that a lot as a viable option. I like that because it redefines the term "password" to a more neutral tone of a "buddy game" and adds utility to an existing mechanic. As a "Buddy Game" the icon, instead of a locked lock, could be 2 heads representing a "Buddy Game" and a Sword (or bow) for "Open Game." Edit: Thinking about it, I like this idea a lot. Simple to the end user. Doesn't use terminology that makes it seem "weird" (e.g., password protected). "Password-protected" is weird in the sense that it functions like an added-in feature rather than a feature that was "naturally designed." (idk how to explain it, it just makes more sense to make it "buddy games" and "public games" vs using terminology that is exclusive like "private").

  36. I hope that they don´t give them automatic rank 2, since that would be a hell of a difference. +1 armor (equivalent to +10%HP),+25% HP and +20% attack. I would hope that instead the are given a smaller bonus like only +20% HP instead of promotion. Well, stand up and walk to the window. Why don´t the neighbors have 4 pyramids in their backyard? because pyramids are expensive.

  38. ChronA I am afraid I cannot agree with you here. I think 0AD is superior to Age of Empires and it is not a clone. The graphics of 0AD is miles ahead of AoE's fixed isometric view and the gridded landscape that does not even allow you to rotate buildings. With 0AD you use your brain in planning the strategy and then immerse yourself in the intense fighting animation and sound effects, unlike AoE's 90s style pixilated I don't know what graphics. The art and landscape models of 0AD are obviously more realistic than what you get in AoE... There are of course similarities between 0AD and AoE as both are RTS games but 0AD has many unique features that AoE don't have. They may have started off as a mod but now it is completely independent of AoE, just like I can't say you are a monkey because you had the same ancestor. How do we know what's good and what's bad if we don't experiment it? After a few games the players will express their views on the forum, then the devs will act accordingly. Being afraid of making a mistake will stop you from progressing forward. Han Chinese has an unique unit composition that fixes some imperfections in other civs and introduces new strategies. For example, if you want to do a spear cav rush followed by an archer push then the Chinese is perfect for you. If you like Kushites but also need catapults then Han is the ideal civ for you!

  39. They weren't included in A24 for various reasons but I think it's time for A25 even if they are not 100% perfect. There will be more incentive to make them better if they are in the game than if they aren't It might attract artists that are into asian civilizations. It might also attract historian interested in such civs. There is no way it will be ever be balanced properly as a mod. It's cool civ, it's long due. I worked a lot on it too and so did a lot of people. It also breaks the thirteen number of civs :p

  41. The most immediate benefit (and arguably the most important too) of the ele is that you are able to start collecting res away from a CC without spending the initial 100 wood. Very few players ever make a worker ele and instead just rely on the initial ele plus storehouses that they build. So doing this would be a major nerf. Maybe other civs could acquire Worker Elephants as mercenaries. Then they can choose whether to get Worker Elephants or use the resources for other things e.g. upgrades. I don't know what a fair cost would be, maybe something like 40 food and 40 metal (I tried to get a similar proportion as for archer mercenaries). I'm really new, so I don't know if this makes any sense; was just a thought. And I see that this wouldn't achieve the goal of making the civs more distinguishable, which would be in my opinion the much more interesting approach.

  45. NOTE: THIS IS A REVISION OF THE ORIGINAL PROPOSAL BASED ON FURTHER RESEARCH AND GAMEPLAY CONSIDERATIONS. THE FACTION WILL NOW ALSO COVER THE FIVE DYNASTIES AND TEN KINGDOMS PERIOD AS WELL AS THE TANG DYNASTY, EXTENDING ITS SPAN TO FROM 618 TO 960AD. PLEASE NOTE THAT MANY ELEMENTS IN THIS PROPOSAL ARE INCOMPLETE AND MAY CHANGE DUE TO ADDITIONAL RESEARCH AND GAMEPLAY CONSIDERATIONS. SPECIAL THANKS TO WOLFLANCE FOR HIS INPUT. FACTION PROPOSAL: THE CHINESE Map From Wikipedia BRIEF HISTORY Tang Dynasty (618-907AD): The Tang Dynasty is commonly regarded as a golden age of Chinese civilization where great strides were achieved in science and the arts and military might flourished. The most populous nation in the world, it was home to 50-80 million people and its capital Chang'an was the largest city on earth at the time. At its greatest extant its territory covered as far south as modern Vietnam and as far west as present day Kazakhstan, drawing in a cosmopolitan society of various different cultures. The Tang exerted strong influences to and fought against contemporary kingdoms in Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Tibet, and Central Asia. Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms (907-960AD): The collapse of the Tang Dynasty saw a time of great political upheaval in which 5 dynasties succeeded one another in the north and more than 12 warring kingdoms establish over the span of a few decades. This period saw some of the most important advancements in military technology in history. The battle of Langshan Jiang in 919AD saw one of the fist documented use of gunpowder in warfare. GAMEPLAY Being the most advanced nation of the medieval world grants the Chinese notable technological and economic advantages. The Chinese have a powerful well rounded military consisting of strong heavy infantry and fast cavalry backed by foreign auxiliaries of nomadic warriors. The Chinese are unique in being the only faction with access to primitive gunpowder units in part 1. CIV BONUSES: * Houses accommodate 15 pop each from the start, upgradable to 20, allowing the player to increase population quickly, however they require slightly more room * Most technologically advanced faction: which means many technology, blacksmith and agricultural upgrades are available cheaper, earlier and take less time * Multicultural: access to various auxiliary or mercenary factions as well as research that grants trade bonuses WEAKNESSES * Champions units can be trained only from the palace, and you can only build one palace, so think carefully where you want to place it SPECIAL STRUCTURES [buddhist Temple] Trains monks.
