===[COMMITTED]=== Celtic Shields

Recommended Posts

Try to reduce the noise on the paint. I think only the specular should show that it's not perfectly smooth. :) But scratches are nice. Might use a little normal bump :)

I am working but I take the opportunity of a break just to suggest you different damage type if you want to go in this direction.

A shield can be made from several planks, an unique large plank or from complex work similar to plywood. The shield can be covered or directly painted. The cover is generally in leather. Thus the cover can be scratched or teared. The shield bosses can also be damaged from direct blow from other shields.

An example from germanic era:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thorsberg_moor

The Clonoura shield is also another example with traces of blows and hits.

The Vaedebro shield is finally an example where it is possible to see traces of fixing like metallic clip.

In my perspective following the thorsberg (wood planks) shield and the covered leather.

Wood: Base Shape of the shield structure.
Player color - Celtic Design: Leather cover teared from hits revealing the wood, (i wish i could give bump map in that teared zones making it look like scratches)

1- Yesterday Texture already commented by stan | 2 - Texture used in most of the shapes | 3/4 - New texture baked today adding wood planks, and teared leather cover (player color) above both player color and celtic design.

Edit: Added specular map and norm map with the affected zones here the result:

Note: Both textures can be applied to the shields by leaving the damaged variant when healths drops below % Amount.

Your shields are really pretty nice @Alexandermb !

These ones however, could be problematic to distinguish since the player color is really tiny and narrowly displayed:

image.png.fffef9724a9ec6ffacd0b6406da40813.png

And these ones with some player color, especially the player 7:

image.png.bb0c609d1a327526ce6c01c6819c7171.png

The rectangular ones are very cool on the skirmishers:

image.png.f3c7f17ecd10e6e0724a60fee08991b7.png

Some patterns have very often trouble to be displayed correctly, like this one that appears often like this:

image.png.455df0cc50c3e0f666e0076c5d48be1a.png

I know it is based on this shield I suggested, but it seems a bit hard to have the right condition from random generation to display it correctly. Maybe it should be better if the griffin/bird heads were a bit smaller

Thanks! late reply 80 hours whitout power and will have more so take your time :P

1- maybe use the middle pattern but use full player color instead of wood.
2- maybe leave only the black middle variant.
3- Perfect, i assumed their size could be perfectly suited for skirmishers.

4- i hit enter by mistake

4.1- will reduce the size, while increasing the separation of the griffins.

Pattern license ?

Good question  Most of them come from academic publications, some are very old.

These one have been modified significantly thus they should be ok:

image.png.9303324c07c979ab6879488b3884e80e.png

These ones come from a recent publication but... they are very basic (it comes from coins).

These ones come from google image, you can find them everywhere. These are very old patterns redrawn thousands of time:

Maybe these ones could be problematic, they come from recent publications:

Such a nice work :)

But could you add some damage to the shield boss? A shield with heavily used planks and a brand new glossy boss looks a bit strange...

    • Champion skirmisher infantryman - Caur (old-Irish for champion).  I propose an Irish elite javelinist, with a historical irish shortsword. If the double weapons switch is implanted, it could be an interesting unit. Polyvalent.
      • General => No helmet / Long gaelic dress / Cape / Shield (Square2) with shield boss (group 4)

Shield classification as I suggest:

I tried to maximize the differences between the both factions and to keep in mind that different role units should be visually different. I suggest some exclusive shapes and arts for each factions to emphasize this. Art pattern could be limited to specific shapes to avoid trouble in the shield texture collision with the edges and the shield boss. We could also make specific art pattern for some units to emphasize the visual differences between them. Although, there is already a lot of work on this aspect and this is maybe unnecessary.

By the way, I extracted the pattern of this Gallic shield found on the web:

We can still add exclusive patterns and textures for each factions. I think there is enough texture for them in common.

@Genava55 before the whole electric problem started in my country i tried to organize the shields, do you find suittable that i divide each shield in 3 variants?  ie:

  1. shield_oval_a_01 - Shield whitout Boss
  2. shield_oval_a_02 - Shield with boss group_X
  3. shield_oval_a_03 - Shield with boss_group_X_orle_Shape

Do the shield groups are restricted to factions? i see the group 3 mostly used by gauls while the 4 and 5 used by britons

Calling the gameplay modders i remember for a helping hand: @wowgetoffyourcellphone @Angen @ffffffff @borg-

I Ask for a helping hand in this case for any1 of you guys if possible, to start a github mod for the gaul redesign, proposed by @Genava55 so i can properly implement the rest of the shields and give a more in depth, historical accurate, and interesting Celtic factions in a Kushite/Seleucid Scale. The main goal of this mod is for having a base for the changes done in the celtic roster including the carnyx if desired, and later branch that changes if you guys want into your mods, but having the Master only with the historical accurate changes.

Otherwise for having also the alternative of the deffault vanilla roster @Genava55 may i request also a distribution for the actual roster in the meantime?

I'm finishing the new version of my mod, I just need to see about that png error in the carnyx player, after this I can help you.

If you help me with this, you can speed it up. :D

Do the shield groups are restricted to factions? i see the group 3 mostly used by gauls while the 4 and 5 used by britons

Yes technically the groups 1 and 2 are for the Gauls and the groups 4 and 5 for the Britons. The group 3 being the common set (because of the later Belgian "invasion").

due to lack of group 4-5 bosses variants, will be using 3 in the meantime, later will be replaced with those. First i want to make the distribution with the items we have done.

No problem. Round shields and two-handed swords were the most obvious issue. No need to change everything in one release.

Enabled the group 4 with 2 boss variants: (Texture is 1024x1024, this will be reduced for 256 ingame and kept the 1024 version as resource in art_rep)

These are going to look super nice. So, are any of the old Celtic shield assets going to be retained?

Since these have a slightly high amount of polys compared to old shields keep the old assets for buildings wouldn't harm, even retrieve some designs/patterns to new ones (SVG or black and white siloutte would help).

Enabled group 5 with 3 variants, Used design done by @Genava55:

Do not forget the naked warrior for the Gauls (I think you already done the elite version which is enough). For the champion infantry swordsman, you can give it to both faction like this:

  • Champion swordsman - Argos
    • Britons
      • General => Bronze Mihovo or Meyrick helmet / Trousers / Cape / Chain Mail/ Long shield (Oval1,3 Hexagonal2, Square3, 4) with shield boss (group 5)
