  1. Topic where we can dump all of the noteworthy videos of 0 A.D. There have been other threads like this before, but I'm stickying this one. This week, I found: 43 minute run-through of Death Canyon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsDya5qG-AQ 5 minute commentary video

  3. In July 2009, 0 A.D. became free, open-source software (FOSS), where "free" means both gratis and, more importantly, "free" as in software and cultural freedom. (Specifically, we, the developers of 0 A.D., have made the code and data of the game available under the GPL license, version 2 or later, and released the art, sound and documentation under CC-BY-SA, version 3.0.) Briefly, this means that we allowed anyone to reuse components of 0 A.D. for any purpose, redistribute them and remix them without having to ask us for permission. They are free to make new games using the 0 A.D. engine, they may create remixes of 0 A.D. music, you name it. We did this, among other reasons, because we believe free, open-source software like 0 A.D. encourages sharing, learning and creativity, and we want to encourage people to remix, mod and tinker with 0 A.D. in the future. --- But there's an important condition that comes with these licenses. The main condition we ask from anyone who wants to make their own works derived from 0 A.D. (or parts of it) is that they release those derivative works only under the same licenses we did, or under similar ones. In other words, let's say you want to take a 3d elephant from 0 A.D. and you want to add a funny hat on its head and show everyone on the internet that you made a funny elephant with a hat. If you do this using an elephant from 0 A.D., you must allow other people to reuse the "elephant with the hat" image as much as they want, to redistribute and to remix it, etc., and even print it on posters and sell them if they want to. If you remix an elephant image from 0 A.D., you cannot legally tell people, "you can't use this 'elephant with hat' image without my permission", or require money for the permission to print it, etc. In this way, the creator of the "elephant" image makes sure that the "elephant and hat" work, the "elephant in a dress" work etc. all remain free cultural works. Nobody can legally rip off 0 A.D. works to make their own proprietary art. Rather, the 0 A.D. artwork and all its derivatives will remain forever free for everyone to share and enjoy. --- For many reasons, it is important that we make sure that everything that is bundled as a part of 0 A.D. is released freely. From the codebase and development tools, through the unit statistics, the artwork, the music score and the sound effects, to the stories of the scenarios and campaigns - Everything must be free (as in "freedom"). We must be very strict about this, or we risk disappointing some people who really want to make sure everything they use is free and trust us to keep tabs on these matters. This helps us maintain effective ways for 0 A.D.'s distribution and our public image. So, if you want us to bundle your art contributions with 0 A.D., we ask you to post in this thread to release your artwork under CC BY-SA 3.0. To do this, please copy-paste the following sentence and post in this thread: Please remember this action is irrevocable - Once you release a work under this license, you can never take it back and say, "I don't allow you to remix this 3d giraffe without asking for my permission". --- Thanks in advance from all of us. Feel free to post in this thread if you have any questions. And may your contribution to free software and culture be everlasting.

  4. Hello everyone, This is an update on the progress of the Alpha 27 release. After extensive deliberation, the team has decided to abort the release process for the foreseeable future. As some of you know, we've been in a "feature freeze" for the past 3 months. This period, during which we halt all new code merging except for crucial bug fixes, is typically a final step before a release. Unfortunately, progress on the release has been slower than anticipated, and Alpha 27 is still several weeks away. Some of the outstanding issues include: Acquiring the necessary macOS certificates for signing the packages Completing the trailer for the announcement, and finishing the announcement itself More testing is potentially needed, and some important bug fixes are not yet merged. The balance of A27 has not been extensively tested and refined. The time it takes to actually release (uploading packages, informing maintainers, etc.) is potentially more than any of the team can commit to right now. Our current pace on these matters is unsustainable. Following a vote, we have chosen to abort the release and refocus. This decision wasn't made lightly, but we believe it's in the best interest of 0 A.D.'s long-term health. We will use this time to: Merge improvements that have been developed during the feature freeze, such as optimizations and further fixes. Identify and address the issues that have hindered the current release process, as we cannot hope to release in the future without fixing them. We will likely come back to the community with more information on this last point and potentially requests for help. We realize that this news may be disappointing. We thank you for your patience, understanding, and ongoing support. On behalf of everyone at Wildfire Games, Wraitii

  5. https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2024/04/flathub-now-prominently-notes-unverified-flatpak-apps/ I understand that it's extra work for the developers, but I can foresee this as a potential hang up for new Linux users trying to get onto 0 A.D. Flatpak is by far the easiest way to install an up-to-date version of the game, and a big unverified tag might turn people away. Anyway, I'm sure whoever runs the unofficial flatpak repo, would gladly hand it over to the developers, and so all the set-up work will be done. All that would need to be done is update the flatpak whenever we get a new release.

  6. Was a bit bored so i made it anyway, lol. Do with it as you (anyone) please. Delete the Foundation file if you want the trees to disappear the moment they start building, otherwise they will only be deleted until the wall is done (to prevent exploits?). walls_destroy_trees.pyromod Btw, the tooltips like "cannot be built on another building or resource" for walls aren't working in vanilla. A project for someone else

  8. Just so we're on the same page, we have an official snap maintained by @oSoMoN @andy5995 also made a pipeline to build an appimage (I sadly never had the time to port it to jenkins) We're in contact with Arch, Debian, Ubuntu, FreeBSD and Fedora for official packages The problem is not so the package but the testing. There is a myriad of Linuxes, and none of them behave the same. eg different kernel versions https://feedback.wildfiregames.com/os/ The moment you take the responsibility to make the package you have to test every distro. Which is why while it's official snap and appimages are still separated for now.

  9. Why would you mind the unverified label for flatpack? Also what does native mean? After all the exe is a native x86 binary and flatpack isn't a native distribution package. Using wine gets you a 0-day trusted binary path at basically no cost for wfg. The cost for a release I'd argue is already in the unhealthy territory. I fully understand that this might not be the most favorite solution for a small set of users but my standpoint is providing the sources is good enough and beyond that is adding bells and whistles.

  10. Well we usually work with Fedora, Debian and Ubuntu repositories, but yeah updating packages can sometimes take a month. Isn't ubuntu the most used distro, and their default app manager now using snap ? (I may be out of the loop there) I'm not able to take decisions on this anymore but this sounds good. Unfortunately testing is not really the issue there, the problem is more whatever kind of virtualization happens in there that breaks graphic drivers and sound ones.

  12. This forum is primarily for discussion between developers working on 0 A.D. In other words: Unrelated questions will be moved/deleted While team members might participate when they have time we cannot promise to answer every question as we need to prioritize the actual development. To read info on a lot of things from how to checkout the game from SVN to playing the game to the Technical Design Document please go to the Trac Wiki. Just beginning with developing 0 A.D? Want to download the game to check out the current state? Then check out the Getting Started guide.

  15. Some resources which already exist on the map (fruit and fish) will recover resources over time when they are not being gathered. The rate of regeneration needs to be decided. 1. Constant regeneration. This is very simple, the amount of resources increases by the same amount each second. 2. Sigmoid regeneration. This varies the regeneration rate based on the current resources. When the resource is close to empty then the rate is slow and when the resource is nearly full the rate is also slow. I have attached a diagram showing the two methods, constant is in orange and sigmoid is in green. Discussion thread
    1 point
  16. Nope. I prefer using constant regeneration for berries and sigmoid regeneration for fish. This strikes a good balance between optimal realism and optimal gameplay value. I outlined the advantages and disadvantages of sigmoid regeneration in this post, and I think I presented a convincing argument that sigmoid has considerably more advantages than disadvantages.
