I've just committed the building snapping feature. I'd like to here some feedback: does it behave like you expect, would you like to change something (like adding an option to enable it by default)? To use the building snapping you need to select a building, press Ctrl and move your mouse. When a preview of the new building is near to other structures it`s trying to snap to their edges (while Ctrl is pressed). Snapping (1).mp45 points

Although not everything on your 2019 art wishlist has been finished and committed, a lot of art has been improved or added last year, including many things not on your list. Because it's now January, it's now time for a 2020 art wishlist. Here's mine: animals: animate all animals that still lack animations create young animals: foal, calf, kid, lamb, piglet create more domestic birds: ducks, geese, swans; pheasant, quail, quinea fowl, turkey create mule (infertile offspring of a male donkey and female horse; superior pack animal to both; used extensively throughout the Mediterranean) create Bactrian (Camelus bactrianus), wild Bactrian (Camelus ferus), and hybrid camels (infertile offspring of dromedary and Bactrian camel; superior pack animal to both; bred in and around Afghanistan and Turkmenistan; used extensively by traders from Serbia to India) create llama (Lama glama), guanaco (Lama guanicoe), alpaca (Vicugna pacos), vicuña (Vicugna vicugna) create reindeer (Rangifer tarandus), red deer (Cervus elaphus), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), fallow deer (Dama dama); the species of the current deer is not exactly clear; preferably have three actors (male, female, infant) for each species, as is done for cattle and lions create hare (Lepus europaeus) create Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) and striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena) create cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus), leopard (Panthera pardus), snow leopard (Panthera uncia), jaguar (Panthera onca), cougar (Puma concolor) create Indian rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis) and black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) create hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) (other species are certainly most welcome; the more the merrier; merely listing the most important missing ones) birds: the current hawk is actually a common buzzard (Buteo buteo); rename accordingly to avoid confusion add golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) add peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) add common kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) add griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) (other species are certainly most welcome; the more the merrier; merely listing the most important Eurasian raptors) units: female and male workers for all civilizations (every worker you train has a 50% chance of being female and 50% to be male, as is the case in Age of Mythology; statistically they're identical, but visually they look differently) separate Celtic support actors, creating different female, healer, trader for Britons and Gauls separate ship actors for Britons, Gauls, Iberians; maybe different sails? have unique ram actors for each civilization redesign helepolis siege tower create Gaul infantry archer Persians: create Armenian slinger; maybe also an infantry axeman reuse Dahae b/a/e horse archer (Seleucid actor) redesign Babylonian scythed chariot and make it a champion the Seleucid champion cavalry is a compound of three distinct units: the Agema (Medes and Persians), the Hetairoi (Macedonian companions), and cataphracts (Galatians, Cappadocians, Armenians, and others); it would be great to have three different actors create more exotic units: Arab camel swordsman Kushite biga (light two-horsed chariot) archer Libyan biga archer Libyan biga javelinist Punic quadriga (heavy four-horsed chariot); used by Carthage in numerous battles on Sicily (against Greeks, Sicels, Sicanians) until Pyrrhus of Epirus came with war elephants in the 3rd C BC melee attack animations for chariots structures: 1:10 rectangular fields for all civilizations new docks for Athenians and Macedonians; keep the old actor (boathouse) for a military shipyard new temples for Britons and Gauls; keep the old actor for a mercenary camp new Roman civic centre new wonders for Britons, Gauls, Macedonians, Persians the current Carthaginian wonder is a candidate for best-looking structure in 0 A.D.; however, the design is fundamentally Greek; Carthage has been razed to the ground, so we don't know whether that is inappropiate; however, I'm quite fond of the (unused) tophet's shape, which is typically Phoenician and therefore great for Carthage; perhaps magnify the tophet actor by a factor 3, embellish it, and see how it looks as a wonder? add rotary mills for Carthage and Rome; maybe for all other civs as well add royal palaces for Macedonians, Ptolemies, Seleucids add theatres for Ptolemies and Seleucids redesign Athenian theatre; in classical Athens the theatre was a temporary wooden structure which was build once a year for the five-day Greater Dionysia and demolished again after the festival was finished; over time it gradually became semi-permanent (e.g. marble benches for front-row officials) but remained mostly made of wood, burning down more than once; permanent stone theatres are something of Hellenistic and Roman times. low walls for all civilizations (only Carthage has them right now) rename: blacksmith (a person) → forge (a workshop) (Iberian) monument → pillar or statue (Athenian) gymnasion → gymnasium rP23340 theatron → theater rP23347 scout/stone/defense tower → large tower wooden/sentry tower → small tower workshop (generic) → arsenal (a place for storing, repairing, and producing artillery)3 points

Great feature! If you mean making it the default (like capturing instead of attacking), no thanks. If you mean adding an option to allow players to toggle it (like diplomacy colours), yes please.2 points

Is it? We can add new heads. I just wanted to work on the perks but it doesn't mean other work cannot be done in parallel.2 points

My guess is that it's not historically accurate. A Battering Ram is just a long log under a wheeled tent. It's designed to be mobile.2 points

There is an on going issue, yes. The same thing is being cleared for the Celts and it is also intertwined with this topic. One proposal was to have a dominant culture represent the whole faction and have, regional themed barracks, the same way the Kushites have villages, the Successors with their mercenaries and the pioneer of this concept which is the Carthaginians. The good thing is that we have a wide variety of textures as of now. It will be easier to tweak the actor files and potentially add new units, if necessary.2 points

I'm creating this thread as something I've been wanting to do for quite some time now. The goal is to receive community feedback on things they'd like us (The Art department) to give attention to for the year 2019. Disclaimer: Voicing your opinion here doesn't mean things will get done, but I hope it will allow me to see what the community wants. Do not hesitate to voice other people ideas that could be expressed on the lobby for instance IMPORTANT. I will not answer any comments related to adding new civs. Any such comment will be removed/edited. I know that's something you really want, but I can't give you satisfaction on it. If this topic becomes a bloodbath, It will be locked. IMPORTANT2: Do not post references here. Only text, if you need to ask for something specific make a thread and link it here. I will likely spend a lot of my time this year doing administrative stuff, like checking commits and answering the forums, but I still have some stuff I'd like to do on the eye candy for the game and the mapmakers, as well as some code too, to allow a deeper sound ambiance, working together with @Samulis I might also finish recording voices for the Kushites I also have the mods to attend to, and my personal one (Dwarves, go check the pictures on moddb) that I hope to finish this coming year. Hey there! I have been enjoying 0. A.D for quite a while (I played it for many years but only recently played under this alias and more actively/consistently in the community). Previously I have played some open source games among Xonotics, which have an amazing competitive platform for their players. I am kind of a techie and think it would be a great-to-have thing for 0. A.D as well. I imagine (as a minimum for launch): - a list of the players and their ranking / statistics such as captured by the Ranking bot - a list of game stats of previous games (who played with whom) - a possibility to upload / hyperlink recaps from aforementioned games There may be more things that are amazing (such as: lobby-preview, queue-for-join, matchmaking) but they are more complicated and outside of the reach what can be done in a simple manner in few hours of work. I would love such a platform so I can more easily find replays which allows me (and other newcomers) to become better in the game. I have studied the source code of the lobby and know that is done in XMPP (with custom stanzas). This however is a bit sub-optimal because it would require extensive polling from the lobby server to get accurate stats. I am hoping that there is a way to retrieve a read-only copy of the rating data set somehow (let me know!). Please give me some feedback on whether this would be appreciated in the 0. A.D community, and if it is, whom I would need to talk to to make it happen! All the best, Rahmsauce1 point

I meant to add an option to toggle it (user choice - it's used by default without Ctrl or not). You suggest an option to disable it at all or an option to enable it by default?1 point

@Sundiata, you know I don't necessarily disagree with you. What I'm fundamentally saying is be careful and critical (as the approach should be towards all sources). If something appears in 2nd C BC Egypt or later then it doesn't automatically mean it's an Egyptian innovation; it could easily be the result of Roman, Celtic, Macedonian, Persian, Kushite, etc. influence. If it's from 3rd C BC or earlier, we could discount Roman influence; if from the 4th C, Celtic; if from the 5th C, Macedonian; if from the 7th C, Persian. As for those smaller rectangular shields, you might be on to something; now find more references, preferably with proper dating. Roman influence does not mean Roman. Using things from the 1st C BC for 0 A.D.'s Ptolemies is fine. The Ptolemaic kingdom was de facto a Roman “ally” for longer than it was an independent great power (c. 170 vs 120 years). I do wonder though why the Seleucids have Romanized champions but not the Ptolemies.1 point

Not yet, but we do have a developer version available for the public, it is called 0 A.D. SVN version. Using SVN will allow you to play on the most recent content and build released by developers and artists.1 point

@Nescio Sorry if it took several months to address this issue, academics and the work on other textures buried the progress here. Some basic Sogdian archers (Re-used existing assets) and a more rural Sardian auxillaries. The advanced (animal pelt vests) could also be used for hillmen infantry if we will add them in the future. Could I use animal pelt vests for basic rank Hyrcanian cavalry?1 point

For walls I think a different solution would be best. We should be able to set multiple objects (wall towers for instance) as end points in the wallset template. Right now you can only designate 1 (as far as I know, I experimented with this unsuccessfully many moons ago). So for instance you should be able to set a stone wall tower as a possible endpoint in the palisade wallset xml file (while you wouldn't do vice versa). I use "endpoint" as the word because I don't have access to the game code at the moment for the proper term.1 point

As a proposal for those interested in making one, I'd recommend making it based on the greek letter ψ. It has the advantage of looking like a fork and being classy as well.1 point

The author seems to be critiquing Hegelianism, or Hegel's Philosophy of History, but doesn't mention him in the article, choosing to talk about Darwin and Spencer's Social Darwinism instead. Those are of course relevant as well but most of these games follow some sort of Hegelian principle more than anything (stages of history)... 19th and 20th century history narratives, both explicit and implicit are still ingrained in our education systems, media, popular culture and the very psyche of society itself, even today in the 21st century. These often erroneous narratives, which are often the result of systematic omissions of certain histories, and idealization of certain other histories, need to be actively addressed, even today, but the social studies crowd are making a hot mess out of it, trying to replace one simplistic narrative with another. Even some historians seem painfully ill equipped to address some of the longstanding biases in their respective fields. And others play this weird game, where instead of addressing the erroneous biases, they try to come up with "explanations" for why things are "the way they are", often based on a lack of knowledge on the subject matter at hand. Germs and Steel is perfect example of this. Rather than addressing the holes we collectively have in our historical understanding of the world, the author of that book tries to confirm our biases, but just provides different "explanations". The author of that vice article does something similar. He doesn't challenge our understanding of historical events, but tries to change the way we perceive them. He argues that we should abandon the idea that one civilization could be victorious over another, that history has no true victors, and that history is not about "competition between nations and/or races". I don't even know what to make of that conclusion, other than that it's poorly thought through, and not in the slightest based on the actual study of history, but rather some kind of misplaced socio-political statement. I wouldn't want to play his idea of a fun game.1 point

@Nescio Would something like this be appropriate for the basic rank archer? I was thinking of plain simple long sleeved tunic and trousers (We currently have the textures which are used by the basic rank Persian spearmen)1 point
