Specific Name Review: Structures

Recommended Posts

Hi Nescio,

I put together a "Structure" listing as you suggested. I went through each template in the "Structures" directory to pull the "Specific" and "Generic" names for the list. Some items didn't have anything and some only had one or the other. I used some of the generic templates from the "Templates" directory itself and some of the names I found by playing the game to see what displayed. Could you please look at the file and let me know if this is what you wanted? A few of the structures don't seem to exist in the game, such as "Range" and Workshop" or "Stables" for most of the Civs.

I'm working on the unit listing now.

Thanks,

Dok

Great, that's exactly what I wanted!

If a value is not specified in the template itself, it inherits it from its parent (specified in line 2); that's how XML works (and why it's useful).

This is one of the reasons why having this list is useful. (Those three structures were added relatively recently, long after the others, and are not yet used in game. However, they should get specific names.)

When ready, use the @[user name] tag in your post to ensure we (@Itms and @Nescio) are automatically notified.

(also, the 'successor' Greeks should rather have a 'Basileion' building instead of an 'Agora' - where do I suggest adjustments of actual names? help?)

Could you have a look at the file and post what the specific names for the Greek factions should be? Please write polytonic Greek. The proper transliteration could be decided later. Also, any suggestions for the Archery Range, Stable, and Workshop?

@Genava55 and @GunChleoc, could you do that for the Briton and Gaulish specific names?

@Sundiata, could you check the Kushite specific names?

@Nescio I did a list in the past in this thread for the buildings. I can do the rest one day for all the units and others buildings if it is necessary:

Thanks for pointing that out, I was unaware of that.

Feast-center means Tavern and Tower means Wall Tower? In that case, the following appear to be missing: outpost, sentry tower, defence tower, archery range, cavalry stable, siege workshop, and dog kennel.

If I understand correctly, the names in the second column are currently used in 0 A.D., which you propose to change into those listed in the third column. Which language(s) are you using?

@Itms What's 0 A.D.'s policy on unattested, reconstructed forms?

And whom can I contact for the Carthaginian, Iberian, and Mauryan specific names?

@stanislas69 Could you split off the post starting with the one containing the txt file (#367473) to form a new “Specific names review” thread?

There is no policy so far, but I don't think we would have an issue with them (we might need them anyways, because we are not going to restrict the gameplay on the basis of attested names for buildings and units). If we have a documentation with the source, of course, it would be important to mark the forums as reconstructed there. But in the game they don't need to be marked as such.

I have Sanskrit resources for Mauryas.

There is an online lexicon, including some basic vocabulary here: http://ancientroadpublications.com/Studies/AncientLanguage/Phoenician.pdf  I'm fairly sure that it isn't quite the right dialect, but it could be a good starting point.

All the words are unvocalised, making the reconstruction a bit hard, but Plautus' play Poenus apparently did have some Punic featured in it that is vocalised.

PLEASE let us have a consideration of whether this polytonic transliteration is really something we can't do without.

Because consider please that it takes quite some schooling to be able to execute those polytonic accents correctly even if you have been schooled to understand them and can read Greek letters - which you probably can if you can read the accents, right? - and even THEN, it is super inauthentic since the ancients never used diacritical marks (or any punctuation really) and in addition to that they did not use any minuscule letters.

Only koine Greek started to develop a "pressure" principle in pronounciation, like we have today. But not until late in our period of the game.

So why not just used clear unconfusing transliteration, which all can understand, without accents.
Or what about clear transliteration, in Latin capital letters?

From what I understand polytonic Greek will not be committed it's just to get a common base for everything before we transliterate them.

I meant this: I see now some different schemes for transliteration, some of them are Latin letters, with sort of polytonic diacritics above them.

I would like to make a challenge to try the argument:

Is there anyone here in this forum who can render that passage correctly and upload an mp3 recording?

I will then upload my "correct" mp3 for people to compare. My wager is that even those who actually know Greek will rarely get it right, so those who read strange markings over latin transliterations will have no use for it.

I propose transliteration without diacritics - only ô and ê for Ω and Η, and nothing else.

Yes, I am trying to convince you all that it is wiser not to add polytonic diacritics to the Latin transliterations.
And since people here like to argue - which is fine - I just thought let us roll out the best of aaaaaalllll the arguments, which is that 95% of those who can actually read Greek polytonic still can't pronounce it correctly even though they have much more schooling. Which is why I ask - why even bother adding it to the Latin translations.

So far the finished, completely standardized list of building names in Greek, for all Greekspeaking civilizations.

Criticism welcome (please don't give me any headaches though).

What I could NOT find was a suitable word for ARCHERY RANGE. Considered "Toxotheke" 'bow-case', by analogy to bibliotheke 'book-case' and similar constructs meaning gem-case etc. - word actually exists, meaning quiver.

HELP.

@Anaxandridas ho Skandiates Thank you, that's helpful, I'll have a critical look at it later. For the archery range, perhaps try “practice field” or something similar? Also, ptol and sele wonders?

@Itms Could you check the Mauryan specific names, correcting where necessary, and find appropiate strings for the Mauryan archery range, cavalry stables, siege workshop, and wonder?

Also, Persians? (Old Persian, not Farsi.)

I checked a million times, should be correct, but please double check. As soon as you have given green light to the final list, we move on to correct all unit names.

Looking for achery range alternatives, will get back asap!

Seleucid wonder updated now!
Ptol wonder, as with Macedonian wonder, we should seriously consider making new wonders. Actually the BASILEION of Alexandria, the royal palace which hosted the Mousaion and great library, is the REAL WONDER. Now that the Pharos is in already in the game.

Macedonian wonder was suggested a palace like that from Pella, in the similar style, wonder could also just be called Basíleion - or maybe Basíleion méga

Checked with my LSJ; mostly fine; a few points, though:

  • barracks: I'd recommend using ἡ στρατοπεδεία, ἡ στρατοπέδευσις, or ἡ στρατόπεδον (encampment) instead
  • civic centre: it's probably better to stick to the agora for all factions; a royal palace is not the same as a city-centre
  • elephant stable: just stathmos is too generic, it can basically be used for about anything; perhaps add ἐλεφάντων?
  • towers: personally I dislike it the free-standing defence tower uses the same word as the wall tower; unfortunately I don't have a better alternative right now
  • workshop: I opted for simply ergastęrion

Yes, I'd also like new wonders (and the removal of that Athenian “Hellenic Royal Stoa”), but that's a different discussion and belongs elsewhere.

For Siege Workshop, would "Synergeion Poliorkias" work? "Stablos Elefanta" wouldn't work for Elephant Stables, or is that too literal or out of time frame? "Toxobolia" no bueno for the Range?

Your suggestion στρατόπεδον Stratópedon I accept fully for the 'barracks', we can use that without any problem if you ask me!
Agora on the other hand is pointless since it means 'assembly' and in absolute monarchies assemblies are completely pointless. If citizens were to 'assemble' in a city ruled by an absolute monarch, I think I can guess pretty quickly what would happen to them.
Your suggestion ἐργαστήριον Ergastḗrion is acceptable to me - although Ergastḗrion Polémou is a nice expression from an actual writer of the period.

Stathmós (tō̂n) Elephántōn / Stathmós (tō̂n) Thēríōn
τῶν ἐλεφᾰ́ντων (of the elephants) or τῶν θηρίων (of the wild beasts, used by ancient authors interchangeably for elephants)

Concerning the archery range. I have searched the whole literature and am reaching the conclusion that archers in the period we are dealing with were indeed overwhelmingly mercenaries. Otherwise some source would exist detailing the training facilities of bowmen, but none such are anywhere to be found, there is always the talk of foreign hired archers or archers whose training was not worth mentioning evidently - since it is never mentioned. So either pure chance has robbed us of these details in ~90 million words of extant Greek texts (not likely) or all my searching has looked in the wrong places (possible) OR archers were as in so many other epochs, trained at home or as hunters like stone-throwers etc. who could not afford expensive equipment.

However for the elite archers and professional mercenaries of the time more expensive bows and arrows were available, along with armour. We know that Dionysos I and others kept arsenals from which they distributed arms to their many mercenaries whom they attracted by generous offers of ample compensation, and the arms stored in them were produced by the same means, ample financial compensation to the subjects who manufactured armour and weapons (Diodoros, book 14 chapter 41).

We find the word, again from Strabo, for 'arsenal', which is

ΟΠΛΟΦΥΛΑΚΙΟΝ, Hoplophylákion

Which is clearly a magazine, a place that warriors return their valuable weapons and armour to, upon returning from the battlefield.

So I suggest that word. The building's name hence would refer to the building in the 'range'-structure where arrows, bows, but also other arms could be kept. And the soldiers 'trained' at the Hoplophylákion are hence mercenaries or local bowmen, who get their equipment from the arsenal.

I am afraid that these words would not have been readily understood by our friends from the period. Using the word elephant and the word root from archer to construct more specific terms, as you suggest, is possible and a good idea. But it must be in conformity with how the ancient Greeks, from whom we have 90 million words worth of surviving texts, would have made the word. But best is: to use an existing word used in a military context by a historian who knows lots of accurate military terminology, who had access to original sources written by the generation of those who went with Alexander or Seleukos or Ptolemaios on campaigns.

See above why we have no word for archery range - as far as I could research, no archer-training institution existed. Most archers seem to have been taught the art of the bow as boys, as part of a tradition such as that known from Crete, or for hunting, and archers seem to have been mainly mercenaries in antiquity (our period at least).
