This does not happen in minimally competitive games. Some players like cesar like to use turtle, but it is rarely effective, catapults and rams can do the job. 40 minutes of no attacks happen only in extremely casual games. In minimally competitive games, you can end the game in the first few minutes with a cavalry rush for example.

Perhaps what is missing is to give due protagonism to the champions. Maybe move infantry champs to p1 and cavalry to p2. Although it probably needs adjustments to the units.

Boom is just a way to play, I don't see it as a structural economic problem of 0a.d. I like how it's different from aoe for example. For me the biggest issue is the default population at 300 in 1v1 and 200 in tg. If "normal" in 1v1 games was population 100, then we would have to have much more accurate decisions than we have today. With population 100, you may not have enough resources to reach phase 3 with all weapons technologies before combat. The punishment for a not so good rush would also not be as great, as the snowball would be smaller, and you can still reach population 100 right after your enemy.

Let me also propose another view on this. Is the problem a weak melee unit or a very strong ranged unit? Perhaps we should change ranged units instead of melee. It seems much less problematic to me, considering that we don't have to worry as much about damage against buildings and siege.

My feedback on what I've seen in alpha 26 is that some melee units look ok to me. Cavalry seems to do its thing when they are in large numbers, champion cavalry has also been showing up well. Inf swordman rank 2 and 3 also seem pretty satisfying to me. The changes for me should be one-off and not a massive redesign. Honestly the units that seem to me to need a look are spearman, spearman, and champion infantry (general) infantry.

It's a lot of changes to be tested at the same time, a lot of side effects to take into account, I think we should do it in parts. In my opinion, we should start with the movement speed of the melee inf units, and then see if the result is positive or not, then we move on to damage, armor, health, etc..
