I guess I'll blog some of my progress here. This week I created a new City Center actor for the Romans by reskinning the extra Spartan civil center actor. In the long run I'm hoping to replace it with something that looks more like the Basilica Aemilia (similar to the current Roman CC, but a bit smaller, and with tapered levels), but for now I think it looks pretty nice. I used the texture files for this to reskin the Roman bathhouse and level 1 farmstead too, so they look a bit more professional. Here's a video of the complete Roman civil center progression now: roman_city.webm Other changes I've made the lately: Civil centers can train citizen soldiers again. I realized removing them from the cc made the early game too slow. Phase upgrade alerts now display correctly and play the sound. This also fixes a bug where all civs were researching the Athenian phase techs. A ton of bugfixes for Delphi bot, mostly checking for entities with undefined position (it seems the AI has trouble noticing when a civil center has upgraded). The most common bugs are gone now. City radius range overlays display correctly now. I borrowed the texture for the overlay from @azayrahmad's city building mod. Over the next few weeks I'm going to start working on a couple different features. I'll try to submit them as patches for A26, since they could be useful for the main game: A gui interface for "popup choices" that can be called from Trigger scripts. The popup choice menu will have up to three buttons, with each button being linked to a callback function that can be used to trigger different events. This will be useful for adding a "choose-your-adventure" element to scenarios (i.e. "Ally with the Rhodians and receive 20 ships" vs "Ally with the Spartans and receive 20 Spartiates"). Allowing technologies to call Trigger functions when researched. This will be useful for technologies like the "Marriage Pact" technology being discussed for the Syracuse mod (i.e. "receive a one-time delivery of 20 Maurya war elephants").3 points

If someone would like to tackle the challenge, it would be great to have the Pantheon in Rome added to the game (perhaps as part of a group of wonders for a possible "Capture the Wonder" game mode). For DE I'd like to use it for Augustus' wonder (I'm able to change wonders and other things based on who you choose as a hero). Shape. Statuary along the roofline and in the pediment. I think it would be my preference to give something else to other civs rather than take away from some unique aspects. I know it is not always possible balance-wise but it helps to get creative.2 points

Remove the pop cap bonus for Mauryas and Persians. Maur are already op. Pers I guess halving it would be ok, too. What I'm sour about is how crappy the wonders are currently. If they'd get the +10 pop cap by itself back and make the 'Glorious Expansion' tech more reasonable, I'd be fine with those pop cap bonuses, because you could close the gap at least relatively. Until then, I stick with my first line.2 points

I think that for the Persians, if it is there, it should be easier to take advantage of but not necessarily as meaningful. For the most part their infantry should be cheaper but weaker, making them the anvil with cavalry acting as the hammer. I don't have much to say for the Maurya.2 points

It's the old Spartan "ballista tower" model. I may use it for DE's version of the Syracusans.2 points

why is it that the "WFG bot" will not allow me to use certain curse words in the lobby in a friendly context with other players (consensual, jokingly), yet this is allowed? if you're going to police for that, at least prevent this. presumably you can use the same over-zealous set of "bad" words for usernames/games too? this is one example of many, many I've come across in a relatively short time of playing (less than 3 months), including several references to Hitler. thx, and congrats on an incredible game.1 point

As of now the population bonus of Mauryans still has not been removed from A25 svn, and it is well past the feature freeze. Motion: Should the population bonus of Mauryans and Persians be removed or reduced? Discuss. Some arguments: The Mauryan population bonus should be removed because they are already too OP. In early game the elephant gives them pop bonus, therefore the additional 20 extra soldiers makes the Mauryans too strong. The population bonus is an unique feature of Mauryans and should be kept to distinguish it from the others. Historically they could field large numbers of units. Persians had weaker units but more population because of its large territory. In the game Persians have a slow boom, so the later population bonus is not as significant. They are also susceptible to cavalry harassment in early game (especially in A25) Options: Reduce the population bonus, e.g. down to 5% Remove it completely Leave it as it is I have submitted a patch to remove it but it refused to build. I will try again. @Stan` @chrstgtr @ValihrAnt @LetswaveaBook @Player of 0AD @Lion.Kanzen @BreakfastBurrito_007 @Gurken Khan @nani1 point

If directional armour were in place, I would definitely agree with that, but it isn't at the moment. Considering the fact that the shield can only cover a limited amount of the body, that alone should not be factored in the equation. It doesn't matter how big your shield is if it is pointed in the wrong direction, and hoplites would clearly have the advantage. That all said, I think that Persian spearmen should be a cost effective ranged meatshield, just not necessarily much better than other on a one-to-one comparison level. On a different note I would say that I am definitely in the camp in favour of mercenary hoplites being available for Persian recruitment.1 point

In terms of historical authenticity, formations should not be maneuverable, durable things. They took tremendous coordination to form and maintain, and that placed strict limitations on the kind of terrains and situations they could be used in, which in turn shaped all the basic tactics and theory of ancient warfare. When I made my last post, I was actually going to suggest that formations should be programmed to just break any time they try to make a turn of more than 30 degrees or so, just to add more tactical complexity the their use. (But I was feeling lazy, and I don't think it would have added much to the discussion compared to the idea of just slowing the turn rate.) I do not dispute that reducing the turn rate or persistence of formations would make them unusable in 0 AD as it currently exists. However that's only because 0 AD fails so miserably at simulating some of the basic dynamics of ancient warfare. Without those simulation improvements there is really no point in having formations. They don't meaningfully interact with any other game systems. (Contrast AoE2, where they are at least used for micro against splash damage sources.) Now that pathfinding is working better, there is no need to keep carrying the crutch of formations just out of habit. Or if you do want to keep it, its time to add new elements to the game that will make it interesting and useful.1 point

Exactly! So why were the Kardaces units removed? We should let the Persians hire mercenary units. Mauryans have no mercenary units neither. We should remove the pop bonus and let them hire more diverse troops as a compensation.1 point

If we are talking meatshields against line infantry, then you are right. If we are talking about meatshields against arrows, their shield bearers were just perfect. You can see my proposed changes are no better than of current game meetshields, and that all other melee units would smash them. Persian empire hired hoplites many times in their history. Most notable one was a whole army of eleven thousands (Anabasis).1 point

@Lopess for me snap is a bit slower but flatpak sometimes does not show up on the menu Both of them are inferior to the AUR1 point

@Stan` we need to update the wiki a bit for building svn in Arch Linux, you need to install the following wx packages for the atlas editor to work (from the AUR) wxgtk2 wxgtk3 wxgtk-common Then during the compile process, the update-workspace command should look like this: ./update-workspaces --enable-atlas -j13 The extra --enable-atlas option is needed on Arch because by default they assume you do not want Atlas. This has not been an issue on fedora. When I compiled it again the Atlas launched with the gtk2 theme, which I have set to Breeze (from KDE Plasma)1 point

I don't think it's fair to say that persian infantry was inferior to any other, they were different, not inferior. Persians fielded light infantry, that is represented in the game by archers. Of course if archers meet heavy infantry in close combat, without possibility of retreating, they lose badly, so I don't think there is need to penalize them further (not only persian archers anyway). On the other hand, persian shield bearers should probably be differentiated from greek hoplites, having more pierce resistance, but less hand-to-hand proficiency. They could also be made faster, so that they can move along archers, as they historically did. But I think we could have much more variety in melee soldiers stats in general.1 point

A better way: use flatpak. Download 0ad flatpakref file from flathub sudo apt-get install flatpak sudo flatpak install <your flatpakref file> Even better solution: switch to arch or fedora1 point

In DE, Mauryan spearmen cost about half the resources and train time and half population (infantry are usually 2 pop, but Maur spearmen are 1 pop). Consequently, they gather half as fast, have 30% less attack, and have about 42% less health. So, it's so easy to mass them, but they melt like butter. The benefit is that with double the men, that gives the player perhaps some more tactical abilities, even if they're weak.1 point

Numbers like that sound kind of insubstantial. Do you know how that marginal of a difference would translate into the game? I don't mean to sound skeptical, but incremental changes like that seem kind of pointless. My take would have been costing ten fewer resources at the cost of a 5% hitpoint reduction (Obviously the cheaper cost is a pretty massive economic boon, and I'm not sure if that specific stat nerf would be enough to compensate.).1 point

Hi everyone, just came to tell everyone that I love 0 AD Editor, because of all the amazing Artistic sceneries that can be made with it. When I downloaded this game few months ago , I did it because I saw a Video presenting the best 10 open sources game in the world, with a visual showcase of all the games, and 0 AD was the top of the bests... As soon as I saw it... I came looking for it in a heart beat and downloaded.... Then I start exploring it and found the editor, and decide to play with it and my girlfriend came, and saw what I was doing, She never saw the little soldiers nor the castles and buildings. Only the beautiful landscape textures, and the millions of combinations that can be done to mimic reality with the editor, while I was absolutely in a trance, playing with the editor.... Then I show her the little roman soldiers, and all the other factions, their buildings, characters, the fauna....and start talking to her about the history of the age in a generic way.... And she as me fell in love with the age the game represent and all the amazing things that can be done with the Atlas engine....and suggest me the idea of making a map of Europe and the Mediterranean Sea with all the factions and cities, stiles of fauna, landscapes, to put colors, trees, make them look cool, give love to all the templates, combine them, play with them, try to make that world you are making as beautiful as you can possibly do, and beyond by pushing its Atlas editor engine to as much as you can get from it, IF YOU CAN! ...And more, if you have the time.... The experience of making a world with this engine is a mystical experience...I do really love the job you all have done...and I mean it...I have been sharing this pictures with a very few people, AFTER A POST KIDNAPPING i DID BY ACCIDENT...with no bad intentions...for real!....And I don't want to be the uncoolest guy around you guys... But I do really think, that I must share them with you all. In order to let you know you are not alone, please.. Share your pictures here too...let me see what you got, made, create....Any Good mod to recommend me??? Please let me know , so others as well, feel welcome to share them here with me, so anyone that show up in this post, so they know about too... Because, guys, at the end, this 0 AD universes is not only made to be played...but is also about giving us all...a chance to create something visually artistic, and fun to play with, have a good time. A lovely hobby to be part off. There are millions of beautiful landscapes possibilities of combinations, that can be created , by cobining templates, and playing with the low terrain and hight terrain tool... Anyone that loves visual art, specially artist or artistic oriented people, creative people, ( if they happen to be History lovers, the better,) will fall in love with 0 AD, and it's an outstanding editor engine. My scenario will never ever be as beautiful as I would like it to be visually...but I do really, hope it inspires all you modDers, map and scenario makers, so 0 AD fans like me...To make your own, and make them beautiful to look at, and fun to play in them...SHARE THEM... please, if any of you have great picks with outstanding scenery, OR A GREAT MOB SUGGESTION... Share them here, tell me why, let me know....Let all share....and play....after all, at the end....that is why we are all here, surviving the madness of the outside world of this age, Playing 0 AD while listening at this....Long Live 0 AD! Thank you guys!1 point

I always say that profanity-phobics make profanity necessary. As long as there are people offended by it, there will be a need for people to provide the required offenses. But yes, consistency, or the lack of it, is a whole other story.1 point
