  2. @av93 I should probably clarify a little further where I'm coming from (literally). I'm an Akuapem, which is one of the Akan tribes (more than 20 million people in all), and like the other Akans (such as Ashanti, Fante Akyem, etc...) we are matrilineal. My own family is actually patrilineal, but that's just a weird local quirk that's not common outside my own town and a few others in the area (due to pre-Akan ancestry). Not only are we matrilineal, but the Queen Mothers are among the most respected institutions, working in tandem with the male chiefs and kings. They (there are many and they form powerful associations and have internal hierarchies) decide who is fit for kingship and make the selection. In addition to that, female priests are important in traditional Akan religion as well, and perform rites and rituals like their male counterparts (and can even train male priests). These cultural traits translate into modern life as well, and aren't limited to the higher echelons. On every level of society, powerful women are not rare, running businesses and entire markets, but also business empires and hold important positions in politics. Women here are generally speaking very strong, and a woman publicly beating a man is not unheard of. In fact, mobile phone videos of such occurrences are a great source of amusement to Ghanaians today (although domestic abuse is nothing to laugh about...). You can also see it in the army and police force. Female soldiers and police officers are common, and are nothing to mess with. In fact, after the civil war in Liberia (during which women suffered tremendously from rampant rape), all-female Ghanaian military units were sent to patrol the streets (under UN peacekeeping mission) and impress respect for women and inspire the young girls and women of that country). All-female military units aren't new to West-Africa either. The Kingdom of Dahomey (Togo) fielded an elite all-female corps, the Ahosi, numbering more than 3000 fighters... They had a fearsome reputation for decapitating their (male) captives and when Dahomey was a vassal state under the the Oyo Empire of Nigeria, they participated in a major battle against the Ashanti Empire (the battle of Atakpame, 1764). Although these societies are traditionally regarded as patriarchal, it's not comparable to other patriarchies... The Amazons of Dahomey: Veteran Ahosi: These women were hardcore... Yaa Asantwaa herself, Queen Mother of Ejisu, second in command of the Ashanti Empire. She led a final last stance against the British. After the British had kidnapped and exiled the Asantehene (King or Emperor of Ashanti) during the fourth Anglo-Ashanti war. The governor of the Gold Coast, Fredrick Hodgson, then demanded to sit on the Golden Stool. The Golden Stool (literally a golden stool) is the embodiment of the Ashanti Nation. Literally its soul, and represents its sovereignty. Ashanti would never give this up, and fought to the end defending it (The fifth Anglo-Ashanti war, also known as "The War of the Golden Stool"). When the chiefs became scared to resist the British any further, Yaa Asantwaa famously said: "Now I have seen that some of you fear to go forward to fight for our king. If it were the brave days of Osei Tutu, Okomfo Anokye and Opuku Ware I, chiefs would not sit down to see their king taken without firing a shot. No white man could have dared to speak to the Chief of Asante in the way the governor spoke to you chiefs this morning. Is it true that the bravery of Asante is no more? I cannot believe it. It cannot be! I must say this: if you, the men of Asante, will not go forward, then we will. I shall call upon my fellow women. We will fight the white men. We will fight till the last of us falls on the battlefield." Although the war ended in a total disaster for the Ashanti and the deportation of its remaining leadership, the British were never able to capture the Golden Stool, which is still considered the embodiment of Ashanti today and a great source of national pride. In fact, fearing further rebellions in Ashanti and other places in what is now Ghana, the British never really occupied the area, and opted for indirect rule instead. Yaa Asantewaa in traditional war outfit (Batakari). I took the following picture myself during the Odwira, the most important traditional festival of Akuapem, during the durbar in Akropong, our "capital". I hope this picture of a Queen Mother helps you to understand the traditional position of women in our society Modern Ghanaian female troopers and police: Ghanaian troops In Liberia: In Ghana:

  3. Celtic society was also matrilineal there was about six forms of marriage including guest marriage these are described quite well in Irish and Welch stories ie: the Red Branch and Tain bo Cullue (Coolie cattle raid). Enjoy the Choice

  10. We can compare tags in source / translated strings, I recall some translation tools giving warnings when they don't match (and in case of a custom script we of course can define yourselves what we consider a tag). @Gallaecio or @GunChleoc may have some advice (having more experience with translation tools)

  14. Hello there and welcome to the forums, Unfortunately while models made it in the package they won't appear in the main game as playable buildings until further balancing decisions. The only exception would be the Macedonian workshop which has always been in the game and just got a visual update. However a few skillfull modders have already started using them in their mods. So you can look toward them to see a glimpse of what 0 A.D. may look like in a further release. Hope you'll enjoy the game anyway. Have fun @JonasTuo

  16. Not really in the BC period, that I know of, except for the (proto-) Aksumites. The rest of Africa becomes incredibly interesting from the A.D. period onwards (especially from the early medieval period onwards), but before that, vast areas of Africa were only very sparsely populated by ancient hunter gatherers (paleo-Africans, short people), who were absorbed by later peoples migrating south and westwards beginning only a few thousand years ago... (Hence my random theorizing above). The exceptions are the Dhar Tichitt and surrounding culture (500 stone settlments in what was once a green savannah in modern day Mauritania) and the Nok, of northern Nigeria (iron workers and terracotta experts), and although important, they're both too obscure to feature convincingly... Axum, although absolutely delicious, is just a little too late for our timeframe and the Kingdom of D'mt is too early (and obscure). In medieval times we get the really big players, like Mali Empire, Songhai, Kanem-Bornu, the Hausa Kingdoms, the Swahilli Coast, Kingdom of Makuria, the Shona Empires, Zagwe Dynasty, Kingdom of Kongo etc... So Millenium A.D. and late medieval mods should be interesting.

  17. There are several North American Indigenous tribes that are matriarchal though colonial governments refused to see it in fact they made laws forcing patriarchy on all tribes being Canadian this is actually part of current political events example war chiefs where chosen by clan mothers for specific terms and even dismissed for any disrespectful act.And yes this is documented just not commonly known as it does not fit dominate cultural myths. Enjoy the Choice

  18. @elexis I wrote this to check for dubious textures in case that can be of use. from PIL import Image import os def is_power_of_two(n): return (n & (n - 1)) == 0 modList = ["public", "terra_magna"] for mod in modList: listOfFiles = os.walk("E:\\Dev\\0-A-D\\ps\\trunk\\binaries\\data\\mods\\" + mod) for root, directories, filenames in listOfFiles: for filename in filenames: if ".png" in filename: im = Image.open(os.path.join(root,filename)) width, height = im.size if not is_power_of_two(width) or not is_power_of_two(height): print("WARNING: Non power of two file found: " + os.path.join(root,filename))

  19. NPOT doesn't work on ATI. Really it doesn't work well in general, and is not something we should encourage. Packing into an atlas does fix that though.

  20. @Skhorn maybe you can see some props on the atlas for fit this gaps, better to fill those gapps before release or we could end having units attacking those empty zones

  28. If gameplay desing is the main objective then you need to see what others RPG has that RTS don't for example Warcraft 3 Heroes gameplay, Spellforce Hero gameplay, Mount and blade Bannerlord Siege gameplay combat, you need to leave the basic RTS Schema behind thats what 0AD already has, you need to focus on the players who likes the big RPG Games but like to have those features in a mass battle management game, imagine Skyrim with the 0 AD scale or like the mod Hyrule conquest, he brought the zelda series to a massive scale of RTS and before releasing his mod he already has a big public awaiting for every faction and update because Total War is just a game for controling infantry and not buildings, people thinks 0 AD is a free copy of AoE 2 but 0 AD has left behind in visual and unit desing AoE some time ago, now is time to leave that gameplay desing behind if the game want to achieve his own potential and go for a new RTS public, some examples are the mods Delenda Est and 0 ABC wich has another gameplay features but the game base per se is what people feels a copy of AoE and thats need to be fixed before avancing to Beta phase. Imagine 0 Ad controling not just an infantry spearman but a Citizen soldier and later you choose what you want him to be, Spearman, Swordsman, Slinger, Skirmisher, Cavalryman, Archer etc, cities burning when attacking. Cavalry dismount needs to be for get rid of the same AoE Schema, Siege weapons needs to be stationary and have a better visual impact of firing slow reload, fast shot, fast projectile speed and spawn dust at the hitspot not flames, and disable rotation for the big ones seeing those big turrets turn around like if they had some kind of rotatory base is just wrong sometimes, for scorpios are ok but for the big Ballista seems wrong.

  29. So, these (Libyan) people are related to the Libyan dynasties that ruled Egypt before being pushed out by the Kushites. To be more precise, the 22nd and 23rd Dynasties, ruling from the Delta, before being subjugated by King Piye of the Kushite 25th Dynasty. They had interplay with the Kushites! How cool Interesting write up: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?735996-The-Libyan-Kingdom-of-the-Garamantians&styleid=41 In our timeframe they were long gone from Egypt though... As rulers at least. @Lion.Kanzen, where did you get this image from?? Looking at the excavation results, that's actually Garama (Germa/Jerma), their capital! Very nice stuff. More accurate than I first assumed...: Other important sites: This is also pretty cool and quite relevant: "Anyway, when looking for some Garamantian architecture I came across this place. It's a Garamantian compound called Fewet. From what I've read it's was radiocarbon dated to the 2nd-1st centuries BC and is adjacent to a necropolis.", from Historum.com For emblem something like this? Although it might be an archaic style... I'm not sure.

  30. The cross will need to be baked first, not sure yet if theres any golden texture in the public folder for make it now. I will make it as a prop point for multiple usage and could end working as a campaing later or skirmish map "Retrieve the golden cross of the Hagia sophia" or "Steal the golden cross of the Hagia sophia"

  33. As far as mods goes nearly everything. As long as you do not touch c++ engine code. If you try to play with someone with a mod you don't have it will ask you to manually install it or use the integrated mod downloader.

  34. Maybe this comment is a bit off topic, but anyway, Would mods split the community? You know, because i can´t play with others if I they have got different game files. And what kind of modifications can be done with the API? Any kind?

  35. About the resolution, I'm sorry but there isn't much we can do. The minimum resolution is 1024x768, and a lot of people are pressing us to even drop that one. So I'm afraid your friend either has to find a bigger screen, or try to play with the scaling by editing a file called user.cfg in his appdata folder and add gui.scale=0.75 in there. About the lag, that's something we are working on but it's not trivial to fix, the more AI the more memory used.

  38. Firstly, I am keen to know that whether development team is planning to place Han or Shang or Jōmon or any other Asia based civilization in future alpha versions or not. If, they are planning to do so, I have some wonderful names in my mind... Like.... 1. Xi-Wang ( http://www.meaning-of-names.com/chinese-names/xi-wang.asp ) This, name suggests for future hope (as par the meaning) (Xi-Wang in Chinese it means hope and it can be used as a phrase for both feminine and masculine character) 2.Xiang ( https://www.behindthename.com/name/xiang ) This name suggests for a future prosperity and good luck (Xiang in Chinese means 'good omen' or simply good luck). I hope everyone will agree with me. Otherwise my vote goes for Xanthippus.
