Err, not really. It was created to make the job of balancing the game easier and allow the community a more obvious place to contribute gameplay effort. It happens to be an obvious place to fix some issues that we've missed as well, but we don't intend to use it as an auto-updater, because it cannot be one. The main problem is that we currently have no automatic download of the latest version of the mod. -- Anyways, for now it remains not super useful -> I am looking forward to gameplay balance and contributions there, though possibly Alpha 26 is perfectly balanced3 points

I mean read faster) and use of colors (green) to represent the increase of stats. https://www.ageofempires.com/news/age-of-empires-iv-winter2021-update/ AoE IV is not as good as the previous one and is not consistent.3 points

Welcome! Please at least pick a schedule (or say that you are fine with any) For players registering that announce something sounding like "if you're short on players" will be guarranteed to play if less or equal than 8 players registered and if we are close to 16 players registered. However, if we are more than 8 players but not quite close to 16, then they will have lower priority but could then register as sub if they wish to.2 points

I agree with your points about the simplicity of the format. Indeed the tournament should be smooth I have no intention of adding rating requirements. I don't think we could afford it unless the tournament gets real popular, and even then, having gold/silver brackets would allow for best possible level in top bracket anyway. Also, the purpose of the tournament is experimentation with new features/balance, not necessarily high competitiveness. The most successful 0 A.D. tournament had a weekly round format so I'm still quite open for this format. Having only 3 rounds and single elimination should prevent some of the drawbacks, but I know it's not foolproof and issues could happen. See Maybe I was not enough clear on that point, but the daily/lightning format would only take place on Sunday, again unless the tournament gets popular enough. It's simply the most convenient day for most people. That said if we can afford it I'll offer alternatives. For that format, I indeed intend to be very clear on the schedule (eg it starts at Sunday 13 UTC and I link to a website for local conversions). Maybe I'll also add a check-in but I intend to let registration open for the whole week. Regardless, let's not focus too much on possible issues, so the thread is easy to read2 points

Hello everyone, LINK: https://gitlab.com/0ad/0ad-community-mod-a26 Following recent & less recent discussions on the forum, the team has a proposal on how to improve balancing that seems viable in the short term. This post will explain the 'what' and 'why'. What We will make a copy of the files relevant to balancing (templates, civ data, techs, ...) as of A26's release, and create a new repository on Gitlab. This repository will be bundled as a 'A26 community balance' mod, and regularly signed & uploaded on mod.io by the 0 A.D. team. The mod will also be easily downloadable directly from gitlab. Community members will be granted commit access to this repository, on a voluntary basis, by 0 A.D. team members. This commit access is subject to the expected rules, such as not trying to mess everyone's work and generally behave productively. More generally, the mod will be public and anyone can easily make PRs using GitHub/gitlab's interface, and people with commit access will be able to merge PRs. This mod can then evolve on its own after A26's release, independently of 0 A.D.'s work towards A27. Why We agree with you that balancing is a sore point for 0 A.D. The issue is complex, and the team lacks time to fix it. Previous efforts, such as the balancing PM or the balancing subforum, did not work well enough. Furthermore, we receive a lot of feedback from the community on gameplay and would like to give the community a more hands-on approach. There are far more players than team members, and we hope that having more people with commit access will speed things up. We understand that Phabricator is a little unwieldy. Using a better known tool will also make it easier for people to make changes. We cannot currently give commit access to the whole SVN repo, nor can we easily split the 0 A.D. mod to make balancing its own repository. Making more regular releases seems unrealistic at the moment. Migration to gitlab is also a work in progress. Therefore, we think this is an easy way to make strides forward while not increasing the workload of the team too much. By making it a mod that can easily be downloaded, and that's provided by the 0 A.D. team, we can somewhat ensure that the mod will be played, and thus a better product. This also relieves the team of some of the pressure of balancing the release right away, since we know unbalanced units (which are somewhat inevitably discovered after release) can be fixed. What happens with A27? This balance mod's scope will not follow potential engine changes in A27, and may not be immediately portable when the time to release comes around. Our hope is that, by comparing the mod with A26, the 0 A.D. team can understand the direction that things should go in and port relevant changes in a coherent manner. This will almost necessarily lead to some changes not being ported, or to some work being necessary to do so. To summarise: we'll give you the keys to the car to make A26 a more fun game. By the time A27 comes, we can hopefully use your work (and our own) as a good template for a better game out of the box. If this experiment is a success, we may reproduce it after A27, but time will tell. --- The repository will be shared around the A26 actual release, to make sure the files are indeed those from A26. In the meantime, feel free to share feedback on the idea and indicate what you'd consider a fitting role for yourself.1 point

In Alpha 26 due lack of Atlas testers we have a minor bug (doesn't affect you if you don't paint terrain in Atlas). The bug is terrain textures previews are blurried: To fix that you need to download and install the attached mod. Note: you need to put the mod before the public mod in the enabled mods list to make the fix working: a26-fix-atlas.1.pyromod Reported only after release here:1 point

Maybe the word "mod" makes some people thinks this is just one guy ambition trying to make players get his mod and doesn't realize this is a way to introduce features and bug fixes more faster and easier. Updating lobby's welcome message could be a good way to people don't suspect. Also, some Aslan's friend could explain him this so he can help with the mass implementation since he is a good and regular host. I was chatting all day and can confirm many people doesn't know this (doesn't even have a forum account) and doesn't even know about Han's bug. I would suggest the welcome message being written in italian and spanish too.1 point

Everyone welcome! I'd say the purely competitive aspect is not the objective of this tournament series. The focus is more about promoting the community mod, trying out its features, and making tournaments in 0AD in general more appealing (so if this has success other tournaments can be made basically) That said, I can see how the already registered contestants can somewhat be scary, on top of that the seeded format would mean the lowest seeded participant is guarranteed to be against Valihrant, etc. As such, I will offer a new option for which players can vote: do you want the brackets to be seeded or random? If brackets are random, anyone could be against anyone starting from round 1. So lower seed players at least have a chance to be against a not-too-strong player and have a good fighting in first round and perhaps even advancing. This also mean that, for example, me and ValihrAnt can be matched in first round, making one of us go down already. This is not the most competitive setting, but can be interesting and enjoyable due to non predictabiliity of result. So I invite people to vote if they have an opinion on the matter, personally I abstain. Players who already registered can edit their post, I won't miss it.1 point

I am late to this but I feel like if battle maidens would be more expensive for obvious reasons like adjusted armors. I feel like they need something more than being trained at a good strike, perhaps that but also making them faster units than a man (not faster than cavalry nor faster on cavalry obviously) a cav variant could be one mounted doing archery. make the naked fanatics both men and women, neither is more expensive than the other for the simple fact there is no armor. we should totally have this also for druids, women were allowed to be druids.1 point

@Stan`@wraitii Current problem with community-mod is that is not "default" setup for all players. So if anyone host without it (and it will because majority players ignores it) there will no be much will do follow it. Community-mod should be automatically forced since new release is pushed. It was crafted to avoid "releasing new alphas" while just minor fixes required. In this part 0ad team has failed. How to resolve it probably needs time, I hope this feedback will let them to "try address it" if not we have to support it from players base at least. PS: Announcement box is not enough, many players not on forum Also maybe you need 2 mods, one for minor fixes auto-pushed (static) - reviewed and stable changes before new alphas will be announced, and one for just "testing" balancing scenarios (might be more variable and buggy) possibly not forced at all. My Hosted Games will be only with community-mod enabled . And I call others to follow!1 point

Great idea, id be willing to play. id advise to make a tournament that seems so easy that theres no way that there will be complication/issues/problems, like overshoot on biting what you can chew, baby bites. this way is best, as there isnt consistent tournament culture/foundation in 0ad and before it gets established through many tournaments, there will be less interest/higher difficulty of pulling it off for a variety of reasons. So id advise best of 1, more dynamic, less tiresome to players so more are willing to play, doesnt take months to organize and a year to finish like 16 or 32 player best of 3 with 1 game per week. 8 players seems like the best sizing to start with, not too small not too large, maybe add in rating requirements later, when the demand is there like 1500+ 1600+ etc. also would be interesting to see 1800+ 4 player tournament, also later ofc. Id extremely strongly advise doing tournaments in single bursts, in terms of time frame, ive seen a few tournaments have very frustrating and tiresome issues with the plan being that they'd last week or 2 but then dragging on for months, etc. PPL wont prioritize 0ad, since its just a very niche game, if they stop feeling like playing they'll just not come online for weeks, even after signing up for a tournament, or having an upcoming match, its much more predictable, that som1 saying they are willing to play in the next 1-3 days will more likely than not, follow through compared to say having ppl promise theyll play every week which i assure you, will backfire 99% and cause complications. even 1 day tournaments, seem fine if you ask me, since itll take each player 3 games tops, if its best of 1. just need to have them be online on a specific time, and have lets say 3 hours free. So the main issue im foreseeing is abandoment, so make sure you have a contingency for this, ie 0 tolerance policy, if you miss that x schedule, then tournament host gets involved, sets time immediately, and whoever misses that one forefits by default. The second issue im forseeing is player online time alignment, this should be heavily focused on so it goes as smoothly as possible, setting it up thoroughly so no issues arise later. And the final issue is ofc, ppl joining it in the first place, which i already mentioned would be improved with less commitment demanding formats, but also, best if from announcement, to the tournament being filled up, minimal time passes, so initial players who have joined, do not lose interest/forget about it. ideally, with the fastest paced 1 day tournament, you announce the tournament, in 1 day it ges filled, you announce who plays who, and next day it happens, and finishes so the whole thing would take 2 days form announcement to finish. setting specific start time, for each day gameplay, would be very valuable as when the rounds progress, people will always be coming online on the same time and there will be no ambiguity/room for issues and delays in terms of people cooperating in pms to oragnize meetups, delays in round progressions as many ppl inevitably cant progress when opponent doesnt respond or when they cant agree on time. Also for contingency on abandon, people should "log" themselves coming online in forums, and organize there, so there is history.1 point

I've not used mods before, so could you explain how these work. For example, this mod is going to fix an issue I'm having with the game crashing on startup. Are these mods configurable? What I am concerned about is that there seems to be a lot of changes going into this mod, but will this alter the original gameplay or does this just fix issues? (like a service pack).1 point

Thanks, I think that this way the use of the mod is encouraged and the changes are made progressively. so this way you don't need to wait months for balance changes between alphas.1 point

Not an accurate statement. Things have been done. There hasn't been a public announcement of what has been done until now. I think that more needs to be done, including the suggestions that I've made in the Lobby Help and Moderation thread, but several things have been done. The whole Lobby Help and Moderation thread represents something new from user1. He has finally described some of his plans to improve lobby moderation and what the responsibilities and guidance is for lobby helpers. The invitation to recruit more lobby helpers is something new. The recruitment of me as a lobby helper is something new. The correction of bugs with the !mute and !mutelist commands for lobby helpers is something new. As far as what the future holds, I don't know, I think there needs to be more communication about it, but in the correct threads.1 point
