  1. A big change in 0 A.D. Alpha 25 is the reworking of biomes. This is something that’s slightly slipped under the radar in the run up to the launch of the new Alpha, so here is a brief look at some of the changes you can expect to see. Biomes are integral to 0 A.D. They are the visual and physical environment that each game is played within. We all have our favourites – or bogey biomes we dread getting in a random match. They’ve remained largely the same over that last few iterations of 0 A.D. – but Alpha 25 will see them undergo something of a shake-up. What Technically Is A ‘Biome’ In The Context Of 0 A.D? Biomes bring textures and natural objects, such as trees and animal species, together to simulate an environment you would find in the world. Why Are Biomes Different In Alpha 25? 0 A.D. Forum member, modder and contributor, @wowgetoffyourcellphone, has been adding new texture assets to diversify and modify existing biomes in his 0 A.D. expansion mod, Delenda Est, for some time. He has been the driving force in getting these enhancements into the core game, along with assistance from fellow contributor, @maroder. The result of this work will be seen for the first time within Alpha 25. What Will Be The Most Noticeable Differences? New terrains and their biomes will be more coherently put together, as opposed to the more ad-hoc nature that they were added previously. And the new terrains with be of a consistent 2k resolution, incorporating normal and specular maps. Previously, terrains were of varying resolutions and only a few had normal or spec maps. Wow, These Biomes Look Awesome! They sure do! And it’s worth highlighting that all of the new terrains come from sources licensed as Creative Commons CC0 – ‘No Rights Reserved,’ – to show how far CC0 assets have come and that you don’t have to purchase assets in order to make your game look good. What About The New Names? Are These Whole New Environments Or Just The Old Ones Renamed? Some (like temperate) are extensive redresses of old biomes, while others (like India and Nubia) are completely new. More new biomes should be in the works for the following alpha as well. Eventually all the old assets will be superseded by all-new ones.

  2. I agree, and I'm very much in favor of how it was in a23. "If I can't stop that specific unit from garrisoning I'm not stopping any other units either, instead I will stay back here and maybe shoot at a field or try to capture a house." §$%&! darned NO! Advance you stupid idiot!

  3. The idea comes from the visibility mod by @ffm2. It's a hack and may not work on some scenario maps, but it's great for lobby games that are mostly taking place on skirmish and random maps. Starting at changeset 25634, mods like this no longer require the lobby compatibility hacks of @nani . So the mod should work fine with A25 in lobby games. vividcolors.pyromod

  4. Multiplayer matches should be savable and loadable If one rejoins (or joins as spec), there should be a replay. If one loads a multiplayer match, there should also be a replay All of this works fine in the less popular free open source game Widelands, so why not in 0AD?

  5. I noticed the stop in place if the targeted unit is killed no longer occurs in a25. But a similar stop occurs when a building's foundations are destroyed or if the targeted unit garrisions. Is this on purpose? It seems like the three should all be the same. To me, it also doesn't make sense why units would stop walking to an area where a building was planning if its foundations were destroyed beyond the commanded unit's LOS.

  8. Go for it! By the way, those type of shields were used as far south as Uganda. There was a Kingdom called Buganda, referred to as Waganda in the older literature (not making this up), who used similar shields (slightly larger): Nubian merc 2000 years earlier with a similarly shaped shield: Those look really great man! The shields remind me a little of another Ptolemaic figurine of a southern mercenary (or police or something), clearly mounted. Almost exactly the same as another such figure I've shared here before:

  9. Introduction. East Asian biomes include the major biological ecosystems that make up the land area of East Asia, specifically China with Taiwan, Mongolia, Japan, and the Korean Peninsula. These vary from northern tundra and boreal to southern tropical and subtropical ecosystems, include several major mountain ranges, and comprise forest ecosystems, grasslands, deserts, and also important wetland systems. One literally outstanding globally unique feature of the region is the Tibetan-Qinghai Plateau, which forms the source of many of Asia’s major rivers and also drives the monsoon climatic patterns of the entire region. The region includes the world’s most populated country, China, and some of the most densely populated areas but also some of the least populated areas of the planet, including Mongolia with the lowest density. The region is unusually rich in both flora and fauna and has many distinctive endemic features and relic species.

  10. I used to be a fedora user from Fc3 to f11 got tied of getting a nose bleed with every new version as fedora added some new tech, fedora is Red Hat's experimental platform. Switched to Mint with the Cinnamon desktop and @Lopess is right on with LTS(Long Term Support) which is supported for a minimum of 3 years. Enjoy the Choice

  13. I played as Seleucids against Britons. I would gladly learn about the best strategies for each faction, but it seems to me Britons have a hard time against Seleucids in A24. Anyone looking at it differently?

  14. Please don't upgrade any further to 21.04. Ubuntu 21 is toxic. I recommend fedora 34, because on fedora the dns package manager is always up to date and more stable than Arch. Just use 'sudo dnf install 0ad' and it will give you A24 instead of A23 if you use apt. Snap is slow. Flatpak doesn't always work smoothly.

  15. Agree2021-06-14_0008.zip, not a release blocker. I was able to reproduce the difference between stopping when walking to build a destroyed building and continuing to walk to a point where a targeted enemy that was already killed. Garrisoning is harder to replicated because AI doesn't garrison much but I saw it happen before and I just can't find the replay of it.

  18. Nah this one is actually somewhat obvious - the only real blocker is that the animation system can't play two animations at the same time, everything else is there already.

  19. There have already been substantial changes to mainland that make it more fair (e.g., https://code.wildfiregames.com/D4148). Resources should be relatively plentiful. Note 100% "fair" is not necessarily more fun because it makes the game more predictable (i.e., if I know you have a lot of hunt then I am more likely to prepare for a cav rush). Completely balanced maps alsp take away some strategy of trying to get the "good" spot that has a cluster of desirable mines. I do agree, though, that it would be nice to have the current balanced maps mod as an official map for those who want it. And, as it has been said elsewhere (e.g., https://wildfiregames.com/forum/topic/42909-metal-shortages/?do=findComment&comment=434039), it would be nice to have a balanced map option that is fair from a team perspective but not necessarily predictable from an individual player perspective. N.B. Balmaps mod doesn't equalize wood.

  20. By the way, here is another rather unique variation of those Azande shields. This one is from DRC Congo, but they stretch into southern South Sudan as well: Nice Azande shield wall: The Azande are an 18th century fusion of the Vungara, with a ruling class of conquers known as the Bandia Dynasty or the Ngabandi people. From Britannica: "The Ngbandi came from what is now South Sudan, converging upon and assimilating a number of small groups in their present lands. Ngbandi of the Bandia clan conquered Zande areas in the 18th century, creating a series of states; they assimilated Zande culture and language and are now indistinguishable from that group."

  22. Rumor is 90+ gigabytes disk space required. Seems really excessive to me, but we will see what kind of content they pack into this baby. I'll be really pissed if gigs and gigs of that content requires microtransactions or expansion pack purchases to "unlock."

  28. @Sundiata @Stan` Updated Pikeman shields: This positioning on the shoulder seems to match the references you've posted a lot more than the elbow-Macedonian position. What do you think? A nice little detail that differentiates them even more.
