  2. @gameboy Yes, that's what @Itms meant. I just want to make you aware of that @Itms is also woking on reducing the memory need of the player AI. That will at least soften this issue - and actually fixing the cause rather than the symptoms

  3. Ok, my fault then. I thought you were asking for a "hit" attack sound, not for an alert. I'll work on it. Thanks for the other suggestions! PS: I quote myself: By the way (just to make it clear), units trained and research completed already have a sound, do you mean to change it right? Thanks for your feedback . I'll modify the Start battle sound and will try the Gaia attack (just in case). Cheers PS: Sorry for the lack of activity this week, I've been really busy moving to Scotland! PS2: Since you all liked the regicide alert sound I've passed it to the "ready for implementation" section. We'd need a programmer to do it.

  4. How did you come across 0 A.D. I was looking for RTS games (there aren't many after RON, AOE and Empire Earth) , and found 0 AD via Wikipedia (that was the first time, I think). I went and lurked at the website/ forums, and found out later about the Indiegogo drive. Lurked more, and then Niek invited me to stay. I'm not that active due to work and personal constraints (I'm now married and planning to have kids), but 0 AD is still prominently displayed in my "game center" at home. What motivates you to play 0 A.D.? I have played it on and off these past few years, although recently only around 1 to 2 hours in about 2 to 3 days a week. To be honest, Omri's music really is a soothing one, while the game itself is engaging. Historical RTS games are really my type, and having 0 AD as a modern incarnation is a blast. Is there anything you want from any part of the 0 A.D. community and feel you're not getting? If so, why? The community itself is very mature, and supportive to ideas. I salute the core team in handling the site and the game development, and the volunteers whose labors are labors of love. I'm proud to be part of this community! Is there any more information you'd like to add? Info, none. But thanks for this opportunity, Jeru! What is your age, gender, and location? 32, Male, Philippines (now in UAE).

  5. Almost two years after the original post, I've decided to come back with some sketches. Not that I hope they'll come to life soon, but I was bored and decided to draw something that could be helpfull some years later. The Fort: References: I originally intended the guard towers (except for the gate) to be round, but I was failing to drawing them round.

  6. How did you come across 0 A.D. I was building a listing of free/libre games and was lacking some good R.T.S. I don't remember well, even if I have heard about it long ago but couldn't remember the name. I think I've found it again from an article on the web (an no, not even as being the first package in the package manager) What motivates you to play 0 A.D.? Actually I don't really play it by now. I played it while I was discovering the game (alpha 15 or 16) then spend most time studying the mechanics. I sticked on it for multiple reasons. The game was very promising and pleasant to play, had a great atmosphere with graphics, sounds and musics (probably the best free 3D game I know in term of quality and the world best water rendering). I loved Age of Empires 2 and the fact it is historically correct, this game makes you learn things. And most of all, it's a free/libre game, you can share it, dig into it, play it on most systems, enhance it, well, be free and you know in three years the game will still run natively on next generations of OSes without DRMs. Is there anything you want from any part of the 0 A.D. community and feel you're not getting? If so, why? Like for every free/libre game I play, I haven't found a local community to play/discuss it (even for Wesnoth which is far more popular). But as far as I have seen this community is rather large and well structured, with a lot of diversity in all domains (free games often lack an art department). There is still something that have shocked me the first time but finally is maybe what have given the game it's durability is the strength of the official team (legacy of the original non-free game?). On other free projects there are contributions here and there and it can go anywhere. Here there is a team that says "No" in term of quality or general direction. It's disturbing at first, but there's still plenty of room for creativity and it probably have saved the game from a pile of crap state of TODO: enhance it (and it's motivating to do better things). Is there any more information you'd like to add? This is the only R.T.S I know in which you can breed an army of sheeps. What is your age, gender, and location? 3 decades, fluctuating, France

  7. I was just looking for FOSS games. As everybody else mentioned, it's FOSS. But in addition to that, the Wildfire Games team does not give up keeping this game relevant and updated despite the sluggish development speed. Slow and steady wins the race! I'd rather have something like this than what happened to Feudal Wars. Also (although it's natural with history-based games), this game made studying history very enjoyable. Finally, 0 A.D. is the only, and I mean ONLY, RTS game that keeps my hopes up about AAA-quality FOSS RTS, so I really hope that the team keeps it alive. Not even the Spring Games can have this kind of effect on me. Video Tutorials. There are video tutorials on how to playthe game, but they're now outdated even if they are still relevant. There are WRITTEN tutorials on how to make and install mods, contribute to the development, etc., but I'm one of those who learn better on video (stanlista's video tutorial on how to import meshes and their textures to Blender for example). I'm going to bring this up. I consider Empires Apart as your direct competitor. I appreciate both games bring an AoE-style game to the modern era, but I will only accept one as the true successor. Besides that, this is a contest on FOSS vs. Proprietary development models, and I want to say that Open-Sourcing 0 A.D. was the best decision ever made. 27 - Male - Philippines Edit: There was Lion's comment concerning OpenAge. It's also Open Source and that it's more of an attempt of remastering AoE than being a successor, so that's more of an in-house debate. I want to see this Proprietary vs. Open Source competition slugging it out.

  8. Hi all, Im making a new map, the siege of Halicarnassus. This is the very first preview, it is still in progress, but i would like to receive some feedback. Yes, it has a lot of props, i like detail, i'm just trying to make it more "vivid". This is the reference im using, i didn't make it exactly as is shown there, i forgot to add some things while making it, but now that is that advanced it may be a pain! http://www.discusmedia.com/maps/turkish_city_maps/5594/ v1.1 v1.2 1.3v This is what it seems to be the end of the map. Perhaps i could release as a 4 player maps (3v1), but, believe me, you cant play it (It lags without unit around, imagine it with units) Anyways, I had to improvise the Mausoleom, with walls and ground elevation. It has some greeks buildings, as i understood while i was reading, they had some multicultural life. I tried to make it, the most accurate possible, obviously, for many reasons there a lot things that cant be made, but in the other hand, i forgot many others . Hope you enjoy it! 1.4v

  9. Inspire by another post on the forum (I lost the link), I made flaming pigs and put them into Delenda Est. They are quite funny. Player can train pig from corral and slaughter it for food or use 'Upgrade' button to set the pig on fire. The pig gets set on fire and can move 2x faster now. It has a 'Flaming Pigs' aura that reduce attack and max health of nearby enemy elephants (war elephants and undomesticated elephants) by -20%. The inflamed pig loses health and dies within 5o seconds. It even have damage variations at 80%, 50% and 20% health (it start to look like crispy bacon). Mauryans do not get access this pig, because they are friends to animals.

  10. This October, I will be co-delivering a talk about human aspects in FOSS game development, with a developer from Spring RTS. The talk will focus on what players, developers and other community members want or need from their 0 A.D.-related activities, on conflicts that might arise between these groups and within them, and how those conflicts are (or aren't) resolved. I'd like to collect some players' perspectives on 0 A.D. for the purposes of this talk. Hence, I'd be glad if you could answer the following questions: How did you come across 0 A.D.? What motivates you to play 0 A.D.? Is there anything you want from any part of the 0 A.D. community and feel you're not getting? If so, why? Is there any more information you'd like to add? What is your age, gender, and location? Many thanks in advance! Aviv/Jeru

  11. Hi devs, I'm amazed at the game, and as a OOP dev, I'ld like to propose and contribute to to balance the factions, in 2 aspects regarding to Rome's underpowered profile; 1 -> Divide et Impera I know that the Rome's "Divide et Impera", the ability of Rome's generals to turn enemy units into allies was not implemented yet, and I think that would be the key ability of this faction to win in late game, since Rome seduced conquered territories and gave them seats in the senate or even integrate the cultures of occupied factions into their own. I would want to help implement that ability, since that would be the key to Rome's way of winning; power through wealth and alliances, like they did. 2 -> Castrum Vallum and Champions The main point on building a Castrum Vallum is to place soldiers into enemy territory and attack by unprotected flanks so you can win. In current metagame, without champions you don't have a chance to win using that strategy, so the use of this strategy, as it is of this faction, is really scarce, since not only you can't win with it it, but also it's very weak in terms of health so you'll be also giving another weapon to the enemy. I propose to help fix this. Thanks for your time

  12. Haha, it's truth. The Romans figured out that elephants hate the sound of squealing pigs. What better way to make pigs squeal than lighting them with flames? Now, I have given all civs (except Mauryans for religious reasons) the ability to make flaming pigs from village phase onward. This is a way for players to help counter elephants, which are very strong in my mod, at any phase of the game. The pigs themselfs do not harm the elephants directly, they just reduce their attack and their max health, helping the defender units to kill the elephant. btw - this work against gaia elephants too. And I found a free pig squeal WAV, so now the pigs squeal when give order and die.

  13. @Le Druide Gaulois I like the concept, but separated wall looks a bit unusual. I imagine something more intergrated: using the same base parts you have drawn, you can stick walls to the sides of the main structure and place towers in the corners to achieve something like this (gate church of Rostov Kremlin): Another interesting structure is the (reconstruction of*) Golden Gates of Kiev (which is obviously more suitable for Kievan Rus' rather than for Muscovite, but still can be used for inspiration): * Wikipedia article states: "It was completely rebuilt by the Soviet authorities in 1982, though no images of the original gates have survived. This decision has been immensely controversial, since there are many competing reconstructions of what the medieval gate might have looked like"

  14. I did some research and found out that the Opus (Wikipedia) codec might be worth a try for the game's sound files. Currently, all 0 A.D. music files are encoded with 160 kbit/s using OGG Vorbis. With Opus, it would be possible to encode them with 96 kbit/s, where the threshold for transparency is for this format (Source). Maybe they could even be encoded with 64 kbit/s (At least, I don't hear the difference). Several ambient sounds might be encoded with even lower bit rates (for speech, 32 kbit/s is sufficient using Opus (see link above)). The sound files currently make up about 150 MB of the installer. The savings could amount to about 50-60 % by encoding with Opus at a lower bitrate, which would result in a ~75 MB smaller download. Doing a quick re-encode of all music files with 96 kbit/s VBR, I obtained 51 MB (as opposed to originally 109 MB). One big advantage of the Opus format, apart from the better encoding quality, is a very low latency (~25 ms). It can also be packed into OGG containers (so the configuration files don't need to be re-written). A possible downside is that decoding Opus files takes more CPU power than OGG Vorbis (I am not a programmer though, so I cannot quantify that). I attached a few 0 A.D. music files in Opus format as samples (encoded from the .wav files in trac). Ammon-Ra_96_kbits.opus Honor_Bound_2014_96kbits.opus Ammon-Ra 64 kbits.opus Honor_Bound_2014 64 kbits.opus Edit: VLC Player can open the files.

  15. Today I've compiled a comparison table to be able to compare all units of all factions in one glance (except for the heroes). Please don't hesitate to contact me if I've overlooked something. Just in case anybody else is interested, the newest version (the table itself is on page 2/2) can be downloaded from: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/54160351/0AD/0ADunitcomparison.pdf

  16. It is in the folder source/tools/templatesanalyzer. It is well explained in the readme. You can easily modify this script to get whatever you want.

  19. 1. I was a general nerd surfing the net for articles on random ancient history and came across a website that had some articles. I read more and learned that it was not so much as history article website as a game in development. This was around the Pre-Alpha stage, and I did not see playability in the near future; not long later playability happened with Alpha 1 Argonaut. I started following development not long afterwards. 2. I like history and I like RTS games. 0 A.D. in my opinion does a fantastic job of making an engaging game without overly romanticising the past or botching up on facts. I also love being able to be in a community in which I have seen my opinions take an active role in shaping the game. 3. It's really great to me, and I don't have many complaints except that I would like more updates. They don't have to be that official, but just casual explanations of recent developments would be brilliant. 4. A witty and funny aphorism? Nah. 5. 21 year old fellow from the States.

  20. How did you come across 0 A.D.? Googling the web for free R.T.S. At that time it wouldn't even open on my computer. Also I wanted to contribute 3D art to the game. What motivates you to play 0 A.D. ? My motivation is to contribute to the game to offer as much fun to people who will play with my assets as I did making them and playing RTS games Is there anything you want from any part of the 0 A.D. community and feel you're not getting? If so, why? Maybe more vision, I mean there are some tickets on trac that have been waiting for design decisions for Years. Maybe a little bit more activity on the art side though I know most artists are busy. Is there any more information you'd like to add? Not really. What is your age, gender, and location? 22, male, France.

  21. In looking for mods related to Age of Empires II, I found Rome at War and 0 A.D. around Alpha VIII. The more historically accurate nature of 0 A.D. in comparison to even the Age of Empires franchise that inspired it. I have made some minor suggestions in the past, usually typos that I have pointed out in the Suggestions thread, that have unfortunately been overlooked. Unfortunately, with outdated hardware I don't really play 0 A.D. on a regular basis, built in graphics and/or an outdated graphics card tends to do that. 26, male, United States

  24. Please, when designing these interfaces keep in mind mods that might add civilizations and factions. For example, try to design an interface that would work with 20 civilizations with 3 factions each, with some of those civilizations having instead o 3 just 1 faction, and others having 10 or more factions. The interface should be able to handle such a case. Some suggestions with this in mind: Get rid of the buttons on the left-hand side. Instead, organize the list of factions by civilization (like in http://www.kde.org/announcements/4.0/screenshots/dolphin-groups.jpg) and allow to chose a civilization. Clicking a civilization header selects all the factions of that civilization.Use smaller icons (like in http://icrontic.com/uploads/features/2013/08/WorldMap.png , maybe without text as well since we have the informative right-hand sidebar). When more than one faction is selected, add a message somewhere that explains that, when the game starts, a factions will be randomly chosen from the selected factions. This flexibility, being able to choose any set of factions regardless of the civilization to randomly get one of them, would be awesome, and you could still do it on a civilization basis as explained. Replace the Random All button with a Select All button on top of the list of factions. The informative panel shouw show information about the faction that you are currently hovering, or the last faction that you were hovering if your are not hovering any faction at all.We would need a cool vertical scrollbar when the list of factions does not fit the screen.
