Hey everyone, I am writing this post to let you know I will become mostly unavailable in the three coming weeks starting Tuesday. "All we have to do is decide what to do with the time that is given to us." It's an opportunity for me to regain some of the energy to keep working on this project and to rest in general. I'll be at the open source experience in November in Paris and at the CDL in Toulouse so they will be my only 0ad-related tasks Social Media might be a bit silent too for a while. If you see people having issues there, don't hesitate to help/direct them to the forums. I count on everyone of you to help make A27 a success and to be nice when I'm gone, and I hope to see you all soon. See you soon folks,3 points

The crossbow mentioned here may pontentially fit the Yayoi period, the dating is not very clear. http://gunbai-militaryhistory.blogspot.com/2019/01/dokyu-japanese-crossbow.html This link mentions something about a crossbow trigger possibly dating to that period as well. https://www.massey.ac.nz/~bjmoyle/dbm/b3/p07.htm3 points

Immortals now have 2 weapon modes. I would like to be able to choose which version is the default version. Would that be fair? Any disagreement?3 points

I agree. It’s a problem. But it’s “necessary” this alpha because of the Han farm upgrade issue. I don’t expect this to exist going forward.2 points

Had no mods installed at all, however - removing ~/.local/share/0ad worked out. Seems some file in there was messing things up. Thank you!2 points

Agreed. More armor or more health, functionally the same. Health is easier to intuit for the player, while armor is more "realistic." Also, Chariots should have a trample aura. Both should be able to fire while moving, the Archer Cav after a tech, while Chariot has it from the beginning.2 points

I mean choose what they are trained as. So you can choose whether they come out as archer-mode or spear-mode when they emerge from the Apadana or Cyrus' shadow. And then when you select the immortal unit you can switch weapon as you can currently. They are best used as archers now since their health and defense is so low, but if your base is being raided by cavalry you may want them to emerge as spearmen.2 points

in AoE Iv i was watching a spanish video and anti cavalry melee type units can stun a cavalry unit. what it means is that cavalry even if they have more mobility, they can be trapped by a spear. the video says it's a skill to increase the riskiness of the hit and run.2 points

Bot? Psycho? Nice entry. Otherwise: anything particular you're referring to in this 41 pages thread?1 point

A higher rate per capita, a little sweetener since in this scenario you've spent the wood to build 21 farms for 21 women instead of 7 farms for 21 women. But per square meter of space it's better to max out your farms, whether it's 3 on a rice field or 5 on a wheat field. Often space can be an issue. So, there are multiple considerations.1 point

It's supposed to be unique to the Romans. Every civ has officers. Centurions, however, are famous.1 point

Yeah, but there are no changes right now. It’s just the Han food upgrades, which are necessary to play Han. All players should be using the current mod. But less experienced/involved players probably don’t know a problem exists with vanilla1 point

I have thought that their have a melee attack and their standard attack(range). The armor thing makes a lot of sense, it will be the opposite of AOE.1 point

I actually gave chariots a trample aura in a mod i was working on for a23. It might be better if it only dealt damage when moving, but I don't know how to do that. It basically makes chariots better against groups of weaker units, so you'd want to counter chariots with champion units like spear cavalry.1 point

For the weapon switching mechanism? I don't know. I don't think the game has been played long enough for a real opinion to form on this. With that said, I suspect yes. Although, like Philip said, use of spears is really a niche function with limited use right now.1 point

scouting tactics (could also be called scouting parties) should maybe be an eye, or maybe a map with something on it. Im not quite sure. Here is an idea: some tracks (horse, footprints) in dirt.1 point

I figured I would put an update to the "unit_upgrades" branch here: https://gitlab.com/real_tabasco_sauce/0-a-d-community-mod-unit-specific-upgrades/-/tree/unit_upgrades/community-mod/simulation/data/technologies I have 2 icons to make out of 23. I also changed the names of some to be a little more historically plausible, also interesting. Also, now each level 2 upgrade required getting level 1 first. This makes gameplay and Ui better: btw, unit specific upgrades are almost complete with icons:1 point

The thing with Gallic fanatics is they are fast, faster than even skirmishers, the importance of this cannot be stated enough in a ranged dominated meta. As was pointed out melee infantry is crippled by moving to get into close proximity of an opponent to do damage while under fire. all melee infantry are universally slower than ranged infantry and they get snared by opposing melee infantry and other obstacles. Which ultimately makes them unappealing as anything other than meat shields. Not to mention the heavy costs involved with getting decent melee infantry in the form of champions that can actually do damage. Fanatics however have the speed to get into melee and also to retreat if needed. They are cheap in terms of not costing metal and are pretty durable to boot. Overall a fun unit and a breath of fresh air. I wish other civs had interesting units that filled the cheap heavy infantry slot, especially for Rome.1 point

No, it's not like a sickle. I've been to more than a dozen museums, and I've seen all kinds of stone and bronze ge from the Shang Dynasty to the Spring and Autumn Period. I have a general understanding of the evolution of this weapon. The dagger was mounted on a short handle and used to chisel into the opponent's body, until it evolved to look like a scythe. Similar to some early Chinese bronze battle axes, the blade is so narrow that it looks like a chisel mounted on a short handle.1 point

Pikemen are clown units. They lose 1v1 against jav cav, while having 3x multiplier. They are only good for absorbing damage. Their design as clown units lies in their awkward stats. Spearmen and swordsmen are half decent, as they deal to little damage and need to approach their target to do damage. As army size increases, naturally melee units face more difficulties. In low numbers, the balance is fine. I would suggest to give melee units stronger offensive forge upgrades so they can keep competing with ranged units as the game progresses. In my view, melee units should dominate major battles and ranged units should be for harassment and minor support. Currently the high damage output of ranged units dominates battles.1 point

This documentary is not well done, in fact this weapon can be made into a short handle like a battle axe and can be used with one hand, the soldier is equipped with a shield, it is often used to attack the head and shoulders of the enemy, just like the battle axe.1 point

the Aztec blade is older than previously believed. about 4th B.C. and isn't Aztec or a sword. obsidian tended to break after each battle. If you were wounded with this weapon, traces of it remained on your body. Since it was crystal material.1 point
