Some people have the role of balancing advisor. It is not obvious if they constitute a bunch of individuals or a team. If they are a team, they are at least a little disorganized. I would suggest that for the next alpha development cycle, the balancing team appoints a scrum master type. This person keeps a list of topics in the balancing team and tags the topics as "Must have", "Should have", "might have" and "controversial". Before topics get discussed, they need a tag. The scrum master would get the final say about what tag a feature gets, how a feature is phrased and whether two topic are the same or separate. Features should be phrased such that balancing team members have the freedom to design their own solution around these topics. (e.g: If "nerf sword merc cav" has the must have tag. A specific balancing team member thinks they are fine, then still some action is required. It does not specifiy how much action is required, so a minor action is enough. So a solution could be just to make units 20% slower to promote meaning merc cav get elite slower.) Also we need to know what the contributions of each balancing advisor can bring. They could be divided in 5 groups (or more) 1. Code masters. Those who can understand the limits of the engine and how differentials for all things in the engine are made. 2. Differential Creators: Those who can make differentials where a few lines of code are changed. 3. Balancing team modders: Those who can make mods such that features can be tested for balance testing. 4. Advisors: Those who don't know how to make mods or differentials. They are supposed to both give feedback and as well help anything to get anything with the "should have" and "must have" tag tested. Also they should try to encourage players from the lobby to try/adapt changes. 5. People who have no role in the balancing team. They might not be even needed. The balancing team should aim to address all "must have" topics for the next alpha. Then the scrum master would be responsible that an effort is made for those topics. The Scrum master should then probably also try to find someone that works on each should have topic. Depending on how many people there are in group 1 and 2, it should be judged which topics are "must have" and "should have".4 points

This map and some desert one are nice maps because you have to fight with enemy civs AND gaia attacking land+naval randomly. My fav map2 points

@borg- launched an initiative, but I have yet to see anything committable come out of it. Ideally feature freeze wouldn't last too long, the last one lasted 2 months, and it is frustrating for everyone.2 points

I will report here my advances with blender in search of building buildings in Blender for 0.AD, and perhaps in the future a true mod of the Mayan civilization. (classic or pre-classic single or divided into two or three city states). Any constructive criticism, tip or help is welcome, I will leave the github link to download the art folder. Since I am not an English speaker, please disregard which mistakes when using the Google translator. Some impressions of the buildings made so far, inspired by Tikal or Chichen Itza. https://github.com/wltonlopes/chichen_itza_mod1 point

alpha 26 is sheduled for feature freeze in a few weeks and, as far as I know, there has not been a single balancing change committed to the game. is this normal? is A26 really coming out so soon? is there anyone planning to make the balancing changes? Personally, I know why I never worked on it, but what about the rest of the "balancing advisors"? how do you feel about this?1 point

I can tell a story about this. @borg- wanted to discuss some civ differentiation. So he invited a few people to talk (I stated I wouldn't have access SVN until somewhere in february). So Athens was discussed. One thing to remark is that a lot of the effort for the discussion had to come from borg-'s side. Borg- stopped to give any input after a while and he actually had been the only one who had done anything at all. After that, nothing happened. IMHO, a system where most of the effort comes from one person does not work. We should have a group where every member does some effort and then things become bearable. Also to keep motivation high, it is good if everyone knows which contribution other people are making. You don't need SVN to conclude things like 35 attack is a lot for ships or that CS spear cav is hardly good for anything since it has horrible stats. Off course, having SVN is nice, but it is not like it is the strictly required.1 point

I like this way of thinking. In case, I can take some of those tasks on myself, whoever the scrubmaster is. My biggest worry is the lack of testers using svn. Idrally, it would be best if changes like acceleration were introduced to the game with parameters making the change null, so that it's possible to test the game from release version.1 point

The Panegyric of Maximian, dating to AD 289 and attributed to Claudius Mamertinus, relates that during the bagaudae uprisings of AD 284–285 in the districts around Lugdunum (Lyon), "simple farmers sought military garb; the plowman imitated the infantryman, the shepherd the cavalryman, the rustic harvester of his own crops the barbarian enemy". In fact they shared several similar characteristics with the Germanic Heruli people. Mamertinus also called them "two-shaped monsters" (monstrorum biformium), emphasising that while they were technically Imperial farmers and citizens, they were also marauding rogues who had become foes to the Empire. Bagauda revolts, which occurred in Gaul and Hispania during the Lower Empire and continued to develop until the 10th century. Their members were mainly soldiers deserting the legions or colonists evading their tax obligations, runaway slaves, outlaws or indigents who faced the labor oppression of both the military system and the "pre-feudal" system of large landowners that emerged in the Lower Empire. The word may have a double origin, either a Latin root meaning "revolutionaries" or one of Celtic origin meaning "warrior". According to Eduardo Manzano Moreno, the bagaudas were "bandits whose ranks were fed by those dissatisfied with the oppressive Roman social order, and whose assaults seem to have reached a violence proportional to their degree of desperation.... It is also recorded that they sometimes made common cause with bands of Swabian warriors in their campaigns of pillage."1 point

The problem is even though borg launched an initiative, he was given no actual power (or didn't take it). There needs to be 1 person who says, okay, we've reached a decent consensus on this or that issue and then decide to lock it in with a specific value, then move on to the next thing. Once all issues are "locked in," a patch is created and put onto Phab. The patch is tested for bugs and holistic balance. Tweaks are agreed upon. Patch updated and tested again. Then when final approval is reached, committed by someone on the team who isn't afraid to commit balance patches.1 point

Not really. As @The Undying Nephalim could tell you, migrating to another engine is tough, and requires either a lot of time, a lot of assistance, or both. And I suppose none of them had the energy or the time to make the switch. They also had another concern, about protecting their art assets from stealing (which seemed to be a big issue for them), which is currently complicated in the main game. Since it's open source, even if you only provide PMD and PSA models, it's still possible to scrap the models. Password protected mods don't work either, because the game doesn't support them, and one could just hack the engine to get the files eventually. The last issue they had was about adding a strategic campaign to the game like most total wars. While I believe it's technically possible, it might be tricky to switch from the strategic map to the actual battle. Probably not impossible though. There was someone from https://www.moddb.com/mods/the-desolation-of-arda And from https://www.moddb.com/mods/silmarillion-total-war11 point

New update v7.0: Audible projectile sounds Bows and javelins have amplified launch sounds and hit sounds British war dog model has been enlarged to a fat bear-sized canine, so you can easily spot enemy dogs attacking you and find your own dog on the map. This will make you much less susceptible to dog rushes, especially dog rush by black.1 point

Greetings everybody I'm creating this topic, because I posted the suggestion for this civ in the "Honour and Glory" forum, but I came up with so many references, that the necessity of having a topic of its own became unavoidable. Also, it came to my attention when I was collecting and searching for interesting elements, that it was more relevant to put this topic here, in the rise of the east forum, than in the millenium one, because I think the geographical area I cover, and the period too are more fitting of this mod in my opinion. Here you'll find elements of presentation of the ancient sinhalese civilization, and if someone is interested, one can even start modding this civilization. Such a mod would cover the earlier part of the period of Anuradhapura Kingdom (4th century BC to 11th century AD):https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anuradhapura First of all, I want to give you a quick introduction to the sinhalese culture. I must warn you that the sources of ancient history of the island are mostly buddhist manuscripts, which are not the most reliable sources for historians, but nevertheless integrate some factual, proven elements. Sinhalese people live in the Island called today "Sri Lanka", which used to be known as "Ceylon" under the rule of the british empire (this designation is still used on tea boxes, and Sri Lanka remains today the first exporter of tea in the world). The island of Sri Lanka is situated right under India, having the shape of a teardrop. The island has a very ancient, complex and rich history. I won't detail all of it, because it wouldn't be relevant for the purpose of this introduction, but I will nonetheless introduce some elements. First of all, Sri Lanka is inhabited by three main ethnicities (there are actually more groups, but let's not complicate things! ) First of all, it's been inhabited for thousands of years by the Vedda people (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vedda), an aboriginal culture that lived in harmony with nature, and who are not as many today as they used to be. During these ancient times, the Island was known as Trapobana (Ταπροβανᾶ) by the greeks, and was said to be inhabited by anthropophagous demons by indians (the Mahabharata designated Lanka as the kingdom of the legendary demon Ravana and his clan). Then, according to a buddhist source, the Mahavamsa, Prince Vijaya and his 700 companions set foot on the Island in the middle of the 6th century BC, the very day the Buddha died. They allegedly came from a kingdom in North eastern India, in today's Bengal. Vijaya was said to descend from a lion, hence the name "sinhalese" or "sinhala": the lion people". He founded the kingdom of Tambapanni (543 BC - 505 BC), but having no descendant to succeed him asked his nephew Panduvasdeva to come from India, and rule his kingdom after his death. However, his nephew had not arrived yet when he died, so he left his minister Upatissa to be the regent (the latter is nevertheless considered as a king, in the official list of sinhalese kings). When Panduvasdeva finally arrived, he was established as the new king and founded his own dynasty: the house of Vijaya, which was going to last until 66 AD. During the rule of the sinhalese monarchs, the veddas fled in the forests and mountains of the center of the island, and new invaders came to test the power of the Anuradhapura Kingdom, established in 474 BC, after several changes of capital cities. These invaders were tamils from Southern India. They had strong armies and superior navy, and they succeeded into seizing the throne of Anuradhapura several times during its long history, sometimes for a short period, sometimes for a longer period (some kings being wise and respected even by the Sinhalese people, as King Elara- 205 - 161 BC) only to be driven out every time by a sinhalese counterattack. However they finally destroyed and sacked Anuradhapura for the last time in 1017 AD, occupying it for 53 years. From this moment, tamils had established a permanent foothold on Sri Lanka, and founded several kingdoms. The sinhalese would never come back in their old capital, and instead moved to Pollonaruwa, during the medieval times. Modern Sri Lanka has been shaped by the turbulent history between sinhalese (roughly 70% of the population) and tamils, the last chapter of this conflict being the civil war from 1982 to 2009 between the secessionist "tamil tigers" of the LTTE, and the government of Sri Lanka (also comprising tamils in its ranks), who would finally be victorious. I'm not going to enter political debates here, I'm just summing up some facts. What distingues the most sinhalese people from tamils and other indians, are their attachment to buddhism (theravada buddhism). They always (at least since the reign of Devanampiya Tissa) have seen their island as a holy sanctuary for buddhist tradition. They possess numerous relics from the buddha (for example, a tooth from the buddha, and a sacred tree born from an offspring of the famous tree under which the budha attained the enlightenment) and feel a great pride abour it. The island remained a buddhist fortress during the times where the Mauryan empire collapsed in India (thus considering the kingdom of Anuradhapura as the true heir to Ashoka's legacy would not be inappropriate), during the Shunga, and Gupta dynasties, and even if it has been conquered since by the Portuguese, which brought catholicism, the Dutch, and the English, which brought protestantism, and also received the influence of muslim merchants, bringing Islam into the island, the inner core of the country remained the sinhalese buddhist community. It's because of this attachment of buddhism as part of their destiny, that Sinhalese were fierce and indomitable fighters when invaders threatened their soil, because they considered themselves as guardians of this sacred legacy, and some still feel this way today... Therefore, as far as the mod is concerned, my proposal would depict the Sinhalese during the time of the early Anuradhapura Kingdom (267 BC to 60 AD) which mostly covers the era of Vijaya Dynasty. It could also be possible to cover the middle Anuradhapura Kingdom (66 AD to 515 AD) which would cover the first part of the era of Lambakanna dynasty, and the rise of the Moriya dynasty. Here's the list of sinhalese monarchs: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sinhalese_monarchs I will post more elements soon. Regards.1 point

Hi Everyone, here is a preview of the Empires At War scenario that I am building for 0 AD version 24, using it's Atlas Editor... The scenario is build for 8 players with 10 civilizations to chose from, each with its very own geopolitical advantages and disadvantages base on their geographical starting areas on the map. The map itself is a gigantic graphic caricature of Central Europe and the Mediterranean Sea, North Africa, Western Canaan and Anatolia, that is base on the real history and geographical location of each of the civilizations in the scenario. The O AD Empires at War scenario is pack with many resources, wood, specially...a lot of it....fauna details, relics, treasures and buffer states that need to be conquered in order to keep expanding and waging war on your rival empires. All those buffer states have treasures for whoever take them that will help you enhance your civilization and keep waging war and expanding across the map. The objective of the scenario is to conquer all your rivals civilizations and become the last one standing. The scenario's map is Gigantic, and it may take days or weeks for any new player to win, and many hours among group of players with more experience. But you all can set the Scenario to be play as a solo game, and set the alliances and enemies as you like, played, and save your game, so you can keep playing other day. You can also modify the map as you like, change the terrain, the starting positions, units, buildings fauna, as you like. Or add others that are not in the scenario for not been participants on that region of the world at the time this historical base scenario take place. I am building the scenario using geographical and real History info to give to it a Historical feeling and make it an educational historical scenario while fun at the same time... But no one need to play my design scenario in its vanilla form if they don't like it, with the Atlas editor, everyone can change it and modified as they like. Here is a preview of how it is looking so far... Let me know what you guys think. Suggestions and tips from all players, specially those with more experience and knowledge than me, about the game itself, are always welcome. Here is a preview of how it is coming so far... Thank you all for your time and attention.1 point

They fought with Parthians and Han Dynasty. @wolflance have enough to share. where you found the comic?1 point

I found the comic on the author's weibo blog, of course. Yuezhi (Predecessor of Kushan) also fought with Xiongnu. It was their defeat at the hands of Xiongnu that force them to went to North India and invade/drive out the Scythian, and later attacked Parthian and India. Kushans also had contact with the Rome (although the Romans continued to refer to them as Bactrians). Basically Rome, Parthian, Kushan and Han were four major "great powers" of the Eurasia theater, connected together by silk road. Later they also fought with (but defeated and subjugated by) the Sassanians at the North and Gupta at the South Kushan hoplites (or rather Greco-bactrian hoplite under Kushan service). "b" appears to be Athena, while "d" hoplite appears to be wearing a Phrygian helmet?, muscled cuirass, and Manica limb armors similar to those used by Parthians. Despite my repeated mentions of hoplites, overall Kushans was still a cavalry-heavy faction (both light horse archers, medium close combat cavalry & heavily armored cataphracts), with their infantry served only supportive/secondary role.1 point

Interesting stuff.. What do you know about early Tamil history (chola dynasty)? Seems like a nice complementary civ...1 point

Sinhalese civilization draft (first part): Anuradhapura Kingdom (also known as Rajarata Kingdom): Possible Kings/Heroes: - Early Anuradhapura Kingdom (0ad empires ascendant timeline): Historical sources are debatable, because the main source of documentation is the "Mahavamsa" a semi-historical chronicle of the early kings deeds, written by buddhist monks, with some mythical elements mixed into it...There are still some unquestionable facts, such as the very existence of the kings, and their conquests and military feats, which have been historically established. + Devanampiya Tissa (307 BC - 267 BC): introduced Buddhism in his kingdom through establishing a diplomatic relationship with Mauryan Emperor Ashoka, from which he supposedly received a seed from the Sacred tree where the Buddha attained enlightenment, and Ashoka's own son Mahinda which became the founder of the first Sangha (buddhist monk community) on the Island. + Dutugamunu (161 BC - 137 BC): Defeated King Elara, an usurping Tamil prince from the Chola Dynasty who conquered the throne of Anuradhapura in 205 BC. He allegedly had under his command legendary warriors: "ten giant warriors": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_Giant_Warriors + Valagamba (103 BC and 89-77 BCE): He defeated tamil invaders, after 14 years of occupation from the latters, and built the Abhayagiri Dagoba (Stupa) Other important kings (later period): + Gajabahu I (114 AD - 136 AD): Very devout king, invaded tamil lands to save his captured soldiers. + Dhatusena ( 455 AD - 473 AD): repulsed numerous indian invasions, and established the first navy. He increased the water distribution capacity by building eighteen irrigation tanks. Also famous for having being murdered by his own son: + Kashyapa I "the patricide" , or "the mad king" (473 AD - 495 AD) who would finally been slain by his brother Moggallana, true heir to the throne, after an epic battle. During his reign, the capital city was moved from Anuradhapura to Sigiriya ("The Tooth rock"), an impregnable fortress where he felt safe (that didn't save him though):1 point
