If you guys really want to push the visuals further for metals without having to re-create every texture and having to bake from highpoly, you should actually implement this: This is how reflections were faked before PBR in games (and it is still used). IIRC the reason not to implement it was due to "reflections not being accurate enough" which is a bit presumptuous since this technique is actually for faking them. Making the reflected environment texture very generic and quite desaturated will work perfectly for all kinds of metals. And if you want to go even further, wraitii mentioned that the reflections could be affected by fresnel, which is basically all you need to fake the reflections in both dielectric(non-metal) and metal materials. (you could do subtle reflections on marble, vases, rooftiles, whatever) In top of that, the performance hit is very low. Here's how stuff can look with this technique: If any artist want more information this tehcnique, is a nice in-depth tutorial of faking such reflections witha more complex setup on a non-PBR renderer (despite the title) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jb_Xf4SWljs Cheers!5 points

Surely it would be very simple to change them to Gallic structures.4 points

Commited! Note: My distribution was following the helmets the infantry already used before update. Nonetheless if any other distribution for exclusive faction can be arranged proceed with the fix.3 points

I think the best should be to create a common architecture for the Illyrians and the Thracians, mixing Greek and Iron Age traditions. I will see to do a summary of the Thracians for the vanilla as a proposal. @Lion.Kanzen Beware of something about the Illyrians, there are a lot of BS around this cultural group. This is because the Balkans are still very nationalists and the war between the Serbians and the Albanians is not that old. Typically this map is the kind of excessive extension commonly seen on the Illyrians. The Pannonians are not Illyrians, the Veneti neither. The Messapians connection is indeed real but it is probably old (end of the Bronze Age), it could justify some mercenaries and regional units however.3 points

Gaius Julius Caesar, anyone? This reminds of being a kid in the 90's, playing the NBA games for Sega Genesis. You pick the Chicago Bulls and guess what, THERE'S NO MICHAEL JORDAN. The most famous basketball player ever. Caesar isn't blocking the use of his likeness for copyright, is he? Come on, we need a hero to keep the OP Gauls and Britons in line2 points

@Philip the Swaggerless It was in the design doc for the "Roman Pre Imperial" civ which was then split in "Republicans" and "Imperials". See : https://trac.wildfiregames.com/wiki/Civ%3A_Romans_PreImp?version=1 Maximus Sulla Scipio Julius The he disappeared from Republicans and Imperials as he is between https://trac.wildfiregames.com/wiki/Civ%3A_Romans_Republican#ROMANHEROES https://trac.wildfiregames.com/wiki/Civ%3A_Romans_Imperial#ROMANHEROES So we come to the conclusion of @wowgetoffyourcellphone above. See also https://wildfiregames.com/forum/index.php?/topic/19819-marian-reforms/&tab=comments#comment-306596 (but that time it was 3 sub civs, now it's 4 ;-))2 points

I really wish we had an ambush mechanic. I have proposed in the past how to do this.2 points

I kind of agree. A cool idea for Romans would be to have 4 different Roman factions, kind of like a unique bonus: - Republican - Triumvirate (Caesar is here) - Principate - Dominate The player in game setup would choose "Romans" as their faction, but when the game launches this player can then choose one of the 4 eras of Romans. That way all the other players only know that they have chosen Romans, not which era they're playing. Can do this with a couple other factions too. For instance, the Macedonians could have the choice between two major dynasties, the Argeads (Philip, Alexander, et al.) or the Antigonids (Demetrius, Perseus, et al.). Persians can choose between Achaemenids and Sassanids.2 points

Excellent work, @Lion.Kanzen!!! @wackyserious I think the Gauls would make a fine placeholder building set. Illyrians were influenced by the Celts in the North and the Greeks in the south, near Epirus. What do you think would make their bonuses and penalties? Team bonus?2 points

Hi guys. Just started getting into 0 AD. Looks like it could be a great game. I have been having a few great battles lately, and last night got into a real good one. The only problem I have noticed thus far is that you can run out of resources quite quick in a long battle. My workers collected all the timber stone and metal that was available, but I still ran out once upgrades, etc were done. As a keen player of the old Empire Earth, I never really run out, just a case of collecting it fast enough. I think maybe the resources should be of a greater value, or even a way of the trees being able to re-grow. Just a thought.. I have been harvesting fields so my food collection level is huge, but no good when I run out of the other. Can the developers look into this. My battle last night went for nearly 2 hours, and I ended up losing due to lack of metal to continue building forces. Thanks in advance Nick1 point

Wouldn't make more sense to keep the baked environment fake reflections in the texture, and leave the specular higlights to be done by the actual realtime specular effect that the game offers? (using the textures "bakes with no sun") I haven't seen them tested in-game properly, so my comment is directly based on these textures you posted. Also don't forget to use the whitest possible map as the specularmap. @wowgetoffyourcellphone @wackyserious Here I'm attaching some texture variations (specially gold hues). I also cleaned up the body part texture, which in wow's test screenshot turned out specially dark. Zip contents: texture variations and masks.zip1 point

Stan only did one variant for the Illyrian, you could try other variants like the one posted by Lion if you feel like it.1 point

Italic Illyrians. MESSAPIANS. this illustration can be some early, you noticed by their arcaic style. PICENTES ---Non Italic origin----- Our Timeframe Italy. Core of Illyrians (Delmetae, Daorsi, Ardiaei, Breuci) With the term Illyrians are defined all that tribes that share an authentic language and culture, coming from the East Hallstatt Cultural Facies and living in the area of modern ex-Yugoslavija and Albania. Even if the different Illyrian tribes were quite different one another, being somehow celticized in the north and hellenized in the south, Classical writers identified a common root for all of them, and common habits (for example, the use of tattoo). Illyrians were also famed pirates, and their ships, Lembos, Pristis and Libyrnis, were well known for being very fast and highly maneuverable, and were even copied by more civilized nations like Makedonia. Now I can see why they link with Piceans or Picenes... This are Illyrian houses?1 point

The textures you see on the .rar attached to the first post is all I have. I didn't have it in mind. IMO it is too much work for very little benefit. This is an isometric rts game with zoom option. Players zoom in 1% of their playtime, and in assets such small screen space are much better distinguishable by the handapainted textures you guys have been doing so far. The reason behind this test I made was to check how metallic materials could be improved by faking reflections on the diffuse texture itself. (Focus was the chest armor) The workflow I described on the first post is the basic art pipeline on any standard production that is realtime 3d based on realistic artstyle, nothing I invented at all. You guys can grab makehuman and in few slider tweaks you can have a cool basemesh to dress it for baking as I did, or I could upload the file where I did the bakes for the setup. Bottom line is: I didn't like how metals looked in-game, did some tests on PBR bakes, and realized it was too much work for this approach. Implementing matcaps/cubemaps (which was already semi-implemented by wraiiti quite some time ago) would be the way to go imho1 point
