  1. Arch Linux has good performance indeed; you can get access to the latest nvidia drivers quite easily and use custom kernels (I use linux-zen) for even better performance. Furthermore, getting an AUR helper like yay or paru means easy access to a huge database of software packages, including proprietary ones (Zoom, MS Teams, Whatsapp, WPS Office) and testing versions of Windows-only apps. Furthermore, all of the packages you use are the latest and greatest. However, there are 2 major problems with Arch Linux: 1. You need install it via command line interface, so some might find it hard. However, there are so many tutorials on Youtube so it really isn't a problem. If you are afraid of damaging your PC, you can try it in VirtualBox first. 2. It is a rolling release, so it is very possible that your OS will run into errors after some kernel updates. To prevent this from happening, I recommend you update your system every evening to ensure everything is compatible with each other. System update is easy with an AUR helper: just type yay in the terminal and the yay AUR helper will do everything for you automatically. So, I would recommend Arch if you are comfortable with command line interface and willing to spend 15-30 minutes installing your system. Some other OS: Fedora34: Very stable and also up to date software. Easy to set up. However, it is a little bit difficult to install nvidia driver on Fedora and their package manager (dnf) has relatively few software in comparison to apt (Debian, Ubuntu) and Arch AUR. You need to rely on Flatpaks, which may or may not be a good thing. The system will not fail if you forget to update it often. Endeavour OS: Based on Arch Linux, but has easy graphical installer and nice desktop interface (which you can choose during the installation process). It is basically a noob-friendly version of Arch that has all of the features of Arch and some bloatware alongside it. OpenSUSE: has a user repository like Arch and is more stable. However, I haven't spent much time with this distro so I can't be sure. OS to avoid: Debian based (Ubuntu, Mint, etc)- stable, but packages are so outdated! Manjaro, Garuda - so much bloatware! Gentoo, Void Linux - unfriendly to beginners.
  2. Normally I don't control group my units. Javelins (skirmishers) are ranged units, not melee. In general, you want to make the melee units run at the very front to block enemy units from moving forward, then use your ranged units to output damage safely from behind.
  3. Range + melee. Javelin + pike is the strongest combination, followed by javelin + spear, javelin + sword. Slingers + pikes with Cleopatra hero or Philopator is also very strong combination. Replace infantry javelin with cavalry for even stronger attack.
  4. Javelin mercenary and camel archers are also effective. Use pikemen to stop the elephant and use the ranged units to shoot it down.
  5. Yes, not everyone puts balancing above everything else. I would also go with the hard option, except it involves a lot of discussion among players. Diversity means some civs will be favoured more than others on certain maps. For example the mauryan worker elephant is OP un Belgian Upland or Anatolian plains.
  6. In terms of uniqueness, they are similar to A24 and less diverse than A23. However they are extremely well balanced in A25. Imbalance will inevitably arise from diversity.
  7. I think this is a good idea, otherwise catas are too OP. I just think they have been overnerfed in the past 2 alphas; now no one uses them. It should be able to deal huge damage to the unit that it hit, but only that 1 unit at a time.
  8. Changed to the catapult: Balancing advisors please tell me what you think: catapult1.webm catapult1.webm
  9. I see your problem. We can ban them from attacking organic units completely. However, I think the problem lies in them being given a turret mechanism instead of an aim and shoot mechanism. I will take a look at the code and SREE if I can restore them to aim and shoot (like archers)
  10. I agree that catapult need to be fixed. They were OP in A23, weak in A24 and A25. They were OP in A23 because they were effective at killing both infantry and buildings, with huge resistance to pierce damage. Catapult spam = unstoppable. They were weak in A24 because, although they still had fair accuracy, archers could shoot them down easily without getting harmed themselves. In A25 they are trash because they are not accurate at all and vulnerable to everything. So we want them to be something between A23 and A24. My proposal: Boost accuracy: spread = 2 Keep maximum range at 100 metres, but decrease minimum range to 30 metres. Keep damage values the same as A25 Increase armour slightly so that they can finish their job before getting shot down. Keep them ineffective against infantry; no splash damage. So that they have to take out infantry units 1 by 1 so not OP at all.
  11. That would make it very secure indeed. However, there are still 2 problems with whitelist: 1. The hacker already knows woodpecker's IP address, so he will get attacked directly, even when he is not playing 0ad. The hacker can just attack his home network at any time they want. 2. Whitelisting makes genuine new players too difficult to join, which might discourage some from multiplayer.
  12. I used wireshark to list the IPs attacking me during 2 ddos attacks. It showed IP from all over the world: Netherlands, US, China, UK, etc So it is likely that the jacket is using rotating fake IP address. Or, they have compromised computers everywhere.
  13. Why are you floating 20K resources ?! In a good TG when I am rich I float 4000, but that's about it. What is the point of storehouses on control groups?
  14. Whitelist can prevent the hacker from finding out new victims to attack. However, it is believed that the hacker already has a hitlist: an IP of players who like hosting. Direct connect and password protected matches might help if you are not on their hit list. Some observations: 1. I have never been ddosed while using a smurf account. Even in the heights of DDOS back in A24, I hosted games with a smurf account and no-one ddosed me. It could be a coincidence but could also mean the hacker is picking targets, or the IP protection is working. 2. Those who liked to host in A23 got hit the worst. woodpecker was one of the most targeted victims and he hosted a lot back in A23. This is because A23 had no ip protection but A25 does.
  15. I think you need the semi-colon sign at the end of each line. If it still doesn't work, maybe insert the local.cfg at where you found default.cfg (0ad/binaries/config)
  16. Athenians can be strong if you play them properly. Here are some of the very strong strategies you can use with Athenians: 1. Javelin cavalry + infantry hoplite. It is able to crush any other infantry combination that does not contain champions. Be sure to research all of the techs in the blacksmith and Hoplite tradition in the CC. 2. Mercenary Skirmisher rush in P2. 3. Sword cavalry raid. Add a few javelin cavalry to make it even stronger.
  17. I believe for linux, it is at: ~/.config/0ad/config/ For windows, Appdata/local/0ad/config or Appdata/roaming/0ad/config (Again, I haven't used windows in a long time so I don't know for sure, but if I remember correctly they were in appdata) You need to create the file by yourself. It is not included by default.
  18. Yes you can. You can create a local.cfg in your config folder. Then type in zoom.max = 500; Or max.zoom = 500; (Sorry I can't remember which one exactly, just try both and see if one works)
  19. I think the reason might be, even though Petra has gathered resources, it does not know how to spend it properly. Therefore, we need to tweak other parameters in the attack plan.js and buildplan.js and config.js Another thing is, if you decrease the build time for the AI that will allow it to boom a lot faster.
  20. If you see an elephant coming, send a few spearmen (10 should be enough) forward to block its path, then target all of your slings at the elephant. It will die pretty quickly. If you really wish to play Athenians, you can use some cavalry javelinists to chase after it. Use 10-20 and the elephant should be dead in a few seconds. Alternatively, use Iphicrates and some mercenary javelineers in a formation to target the elephants 1 by 1. The champion archers are also a good option to snipe elephants from a distance if you can afford significant numbers of them (15-30). If you find Athenians difficult to play with, then choose another civ.
  21. @Ceres please apply the patch to the git. I would like to perfect all of the elements before making a final patch. I have convinced @KKaslana to work on this as well. Right now I am not sure how to balance the civ with respect to the other vanilla civs; we also need to take account of any changes in mechanics between A25 and A26.
  22. Thank you very much @andy5995, how did you tweak the resource gathering bonus for the AI? Which file and which command controls the AI's eco bonus?
