  1. can do, some poop decals could be nice @wowgetoffyourcellphone I get your point here, but by my analysis the more we can do to make these towns and villages look 'lived in' would help immersion, and I'm thinking smaller, shorter lived smoke particles than things like the blacksmith, and not on every house, of course.

  2. I mean the first case, erasing scrapped ideas and describing the current gameplay. But that doesn't mean that anything removed for now is necessarily removed for good, it's going to be like a clean start to base further development on.

  3. I guess it might just be because of English not being your first language, but as far as I can tell they are both very calm, so no need to tell them off

  4. Well... No reviews Everyone was dead two years ago. Also the fact that I only recently had the power to do something about it. Which was really taken by reviewing the Kushites, the horse anims, and all the little art fixes

  6. lol it's roofs, English is stupid like that. So all that remains of the chimney issue is finding strategic spots to place minor smoke particle props on homes then? And getting rid of the ones already present of course
    2 points
  7. Nescio already got this one, just confirming. Typical "chimneys" as we know them today only became widespread on houses considerably after the timeframe of this game (which is different from AoE II). Romans seemed to use it, but not a lot. Pottery kilns, smelting furnaces and perhaps bakeries can make use of some kind of chimney, but even here, it wouldn't necessarily be visible in all civs. Most of the kilns/furnaces didn't actually reach that high (usually less than a man's height). In most cases (home cooking) smoke was just vented through a high window, or through (a simple opening in) the roof (or just cook outside, or in a room with a very light permeable roof of palm branches or something similar). Ancient roofing tiles are also somewhat permeable for smoke. In the case of thatch, the smoke from fires actually helps keeping bugs out of the roof, which could otherwise become infested with all manner of creatures. Using charcoal also reduces the amount of smoke and potentially dangerous vapours. Example: "Reconstruction of a roof with smoke-vent or skylight pan tile (opaion) from Acquarossa, Phase 3" (Etruscan): So, please no chimneys... Only the blacksmiths should have them (artistic license and recognizability)

  8. Thank you for looking critically at things. I believe dedicated chimneys in houses (rather than just a hole in the roof) emerged only in High Medieval Europe.
    2 points
  9. why have a chimney if a hole in under the apex of the roof will do the same? High windows work well for letting out smoke too, chimneys aren't always necessary Also the 'authors' of these buildings may be completely different people active at completely different times, where you see such discrepancies

  10. Currently it's technically impossible for us to moderate ingame chat because we don't have access to the data. If we process userchat, we have to add it to the privacy policy and then some people will complain that there was bullying or anything else in userchat hosted in our game and then we have to moderate that too or justify ourselves each time it is reported. I guess if there was WFG hosting we could still only relay the chat and not store it, thus continuing to have it impossible to moderate that. (Seriously we have more important things to do than kindergardening.)

  11. I've always wanted 0 A.D. to have a dedicated server to host games. The benefits seem overwhelming to me. To see a WFG programmer say the same is definitely gratifying, even though I realize the rewrite would be immense. I have no doubt WFG could "afford" such a server. It's all about the time and effort it takes to do it.

  12. Sounds weird, sorry I don't want repeat the situation like we saw before. I must confess only read the last comments and don't like where this post is doing.

  13. That's why WFG should host these games, it can reject kicks. If someone joins a game and leaves it for network issues or bugs, then it's to his disadvantage. There may be a 2-5 minute limit for rejoins and a 2-5min window for abandoning a rated game after the start. Such as? I believe it would only change the way it would be exploited, for instance using the taskmanager to kill the process or pulling the ethernet wire. If it needs questioning, then we didn't have a solid impression yet. To moderate foul language it's ok currently. Anyone claiming to be able to handle rating fakery is lying. I'd like to invite new moderators too, but it's hard to find someone who is trolling rarely and actually helping. Each time I saw a candidate that I'd endorse recently, he does something that he should have punished others for. It depends on how hard it would be to fake a rating. Currently the rating is changed if both clients agree that one of them lost. So if one rating report differs or isn't sent, nothing is changed. If we trust one of the two players, someone can use this to create arbitrary amounts of fake rating and remove points from a selected player, making it effectively worse than now. There was also the proposal to upload replays, then moderators would have to watch the replay to decide. This is easy to implement, but is extremely timeconsuming to moderate. We need the code for dedicated servers, players setting up the game anyway regardless of rating fakery, so might just as well stop postponing this for more years to come.

  15. I was saying to the artists they could model some mountains. It has been mentioned before so they know what I mean.

  16. I'd look to the split buildings instead of the original barracks, the iron grate and floating arches were a problem in the original, while the crenellations look better than they were sitting directly on the floor, I don't know why the merlons are thicker than the rest, I'd fix that that said i do like the layout and transition from covered walk to the open one

  17. Roman barracks and walls are getting a rework, don't worry about them. I'll see what I can do about the civic centers and the corresponding decal issue it brings up. This could be a very interesting 'drop prop' opportunity as well. Doors are a must for fortresses, I'm not sure what happened there to be quite honest. If someone else tackles the doors, make sure they're sturdy wooden doors and not portcullises, latter is a staple of medieval castles, also another reason to remake the Roman barracks Does someone know if the Mauryan palace one of those eyecandy buildings that was decided to be buildable in-game? I haven't played them in a good long while...

  19. haha on second thought lets not go t he way of Stronghold 2, where you'll lose the game if you don't build a toilet

  21. Why are they in a mod and not in the game? Yes definitely. A very important plant for the Egyptian maps.

  22. Could start using the mod I published on GitHub for the time being Ever looked at my eyecandy mod ? There are a lot of rocks there. Some textures too. Plants I really want to do something but I have been gathering reference on the forums on how to do it. I haven't had good results so far. I'll try some more. For instance we need Papyrus.

  23. Scythians Thracians Mountains Trees (we have maybe 1 good looking palm and maybe 2 good looking deciduous trees) Terrain textures Plants and Foliage Animals Treasures Mines and stones Iberian and Indian and Carthaginian units could all use some love Wonders (cool stuff for my mod, like cult statues and shipyards)

  24. Why do we have to have smoke coming out of every house? I'm still confused on this point. A random dude on the internet says he wants every building to have smoke coming out of it? Why? The blacksmith has smoke coming out of it because it has a visible fire and for recognizability. I agree that villages, towns, and cities were likely very smokey places, but they also had animals everywhere and raw sewage in the streets and people walking to and fro and actual roads ( ) and stuff. Why add smoke particles that affect graphics performance? Let's add poop particles too. I'm being mildly facetious. But still, maybe analyze this a little bit first. I can think of a hundred different (and more interesting) things you guys can use your awesome talents on than this.

  25. What do you mean by udapting? Erasing scrapped ideas and describing the current gameplay or writing a redesign?

  26. For now I'm just working with @Itms on bringing the DD up to date. I have no clue yet on what will happen after that and if it will involve me. I'd consider several of @wowgetoffyourcellphones' ideas, which ones though would depend on target gameplay style and art/coding work needed.

  28. Reserving a right implies being able to grant it. There are many licenses possible, people can write their own rules. The point was mostly to clarify to users that his own files are not covered by the GPL v2+ (which covers the other half of the directory).

  30. I would also assume an alpha 22 mod being installed and enabled breaking alpha 23. You may want to rename your user.cfg in the path (-_-) mentioned if you already can't start the application, or just delete the mod.

  31. The dedicated host feature itself should be possible because players want to host for each other anyhow. But which other overwhelming benefits do you see? It also has significant disadvantage for WFG to host games. For instance I see it as a benefit that WFG can't look into usergames, it should be players business if they decide to fight each other and I'm lucky that we can't moderate it unless it leaks into lobby chat. But if we host things, we have to host userchat too, need to change the policy. Second disadvantage is that it costs more effort to setup a custom lobby. In the worst case it costs lots of CPU power (i.e. actual money in some orders of magnitude, possibly even multiple computers) if we are forced to simulate the game too (and I think we might have to if we want to know the winner of the match). Also it prevents rated modded games unless we installed the mod on the host then. So I want the dedicated server feature anyhow (I wrote a half finished patch, one that added a chat hack to allow players to setup a game in 2015), But it would still be better to not have WFG have to have to host rated games, but I didn't see an alternative yet.

  34. Gathering a team means more people to complain about things and second guess (and third guess) every gameplay decision. And then people end up hating you and then you burn out hard after @#$%king up a fundraiser. Perhaps I am being oddly specific.

  35. Having the sun rotate around the map at the speed of 1 full rotation every hour or half hour would be pretty sweet, dynamically changing angles, having a low point, and a high point, representing "summer" and "winter".

  36. woo lad you're grabbin for that mile lol. Chimneys should be doable where necessary and accurate. I dont think we'll have time of day map tags for a while yet even if the multiple lighting thing gets committed. that said, I am *particularly* excited for dynamic lighting and the opportunities that brings. Iberian flaming javelins and fire ships are gonna look awesome
    1 point
  37. Oh! you're talking about the backface culling. Thats as simple as adding another plane. That's doable without a much higher poly count. You must be going through these with a fine toothed comb because that's the first I've seen that mentioned anywhere on here as for the flatness of the statues, I cant help but wonder if some more vigorous normal mapping could make them, I don't know, *pop* a bit more Some things like doors on walls are just not feasable, and workarounds would make towerless walls impossible for mapmakers. Doors are excluded on most wall turrets because though dependent on drag direction (clockwise correct) many times walls (and their turrets) will be facing the wrong direction.

  38. I'm always for continually improving models... I'm not the one doing it though, so it's up to you guys... Understandable, but is it the best option? I noticed some considerable discrepancies in ground decals used for the same structures across civs. A lot seem to be missing. Like the houses of some civs have ground decals (for example: Carthaginians, Macedonians, Ptolemies and Iberians), and others don't (like Kushites, Mauryans, Gauls, Britons). Same for CC's, temples etc... I think all structures of all civs should have ground decals, as it really helps a lot with terrain integration. Structures without ground decals look a lot less rooted to the ground/unnatural.

  39. can be nice explain more the selector dialog/screen. like possibility to more flexible factions, like have sub factions in a single pack like Romans (late imperial, late republic, early republic...etc) special units/mercenaries by choose. technologies to get focus in some play style(turtle, boomer or rusher) or give more focus in projectile and tank units(heavy armor) or faster and cheap(mass). there is a lot of opportunities by player if "we open this door"

  40. It (assuming you mean moderatorship) requires you being active almost every day for a few hours - this means being available and not afking

  41. You or any other potential candidate may apply to the proper authorities who might - after rigourous questioning - accept your application and appoint you for a designated test period after which you could be elevated to the permanent* status of Lobby Moderator. We are indeed short-staffed at the moment and could use a helping hand. * Privileges may be revoked if deemed necessary.

  43. The Kingdom of Kush: A Random Visual Reference Update You might have noticed that I'm taking a break from the Kushites, but that doesn't mean the research has ended. After the re-release of alpha 23, I'll post a list of some further suggestions to get this faction from 95% to 100%. In the meantime, have a look at some new finds, and a handful of higher quality versions of images shared before:
