  1. Hi so I just started playing this game. (Technically I haven't gotten beyond the tutorial of the game so maybe that's all that needs fixed?) I'm female and got pissed at this game in the tutorial. I get the time frame women can't "fight" aspect of that time but could you at least make a little less sexist by making it so there are male gathers that also can't fight? Or making it so there are like amazon warriors? Or better yet both? Here's more on the amazon warriors: https://www.nationalgeographic.com/news/2014/10/141029-amazons-scythians-hunger-games-herodotus-ice-princess-tattoo-cannabis/ If this is already a thing an updated to the tutorial would be great! If not I, and I'm sure your other female players of this game, would greatly apricate some changes in this regard.

  2. Hello everyone, I have just merged SM68. To compile the game, you will now require the Rust compiler. You can follow instructions here: https://www.rust-lang.org/tools/install It should be mostly straightforward. I am now working towards SM78 which I hope to merge soon. I will detail this thread with what the changes mean later

  3. Hi everyone, I am happy to present a 5-part campaign titled "Macedonia: Rise to Power"! The campaign covers the times of Philip II and ends shortly before Alexander the Great gains control of the kingdom. Some screen shots are included later in this post. The scenario files for A23 can be found here:; https://github.com/SciGuy42/Macedonia_0ad For A25, conversion is still underway. The first 5 missions have been converted and can be found on the a25 branch of the github: https://github.com/SciGuy42/Macedonia_0ad/tree/a25 To install, you must download all files from the maps/scenarios/ folder in the repository and place them in the /maps/scenarios folder where your custom scenarios built with atlas are saved at by default. On Linux, this should be at /home/<user>/.local/share/0ad/mods/user/maps/scenarios. Note that for A25, you also have to put the Trigger.js file from the repository into your custom mod folder. Most of the scenarios rely heavily on scripts so make sure to also download the .js files which also go in the maps/scenarios folder containing your scenarios. The scenarios feature more or less typical build and conquer mission, as well as sieges and battles without much building involved. Make sure to read the text in the description of each mission before you play it. Often, there are intelligence reports that can be quite useful. In many cases, there are multiple ways to approach the mission strategically. The AI should be set to Petra, I recommend Medium or Hard difficulty with Balanced option. It's totally fine to play it on easier difficulties as well, especially on the first try. Hope you enjoy! I am definitely looking for feedback -- there may certainly be some bugs or inconsistencies or issues -- please make note and post! I am looking to do a round of updates in about 2 weeks but need to take a break now. If my wife hears the opening music of the game one more time, I'm in trouble UPDATE Nov 2021: - The campaign is now complete with 45 missions, starting with Phillip's rise to power and ending with Alexander's death. Conversion to a25 from a23 is currently underway. UPDATE Oct 2 2020: - Added Missions 16 and 17, covering Alexander's conquest of Tyre. Also made small changes to some scenarios based on feedback from the users. UPDATE July 27 2020: - Added Missions 11-15 covering Alexander's conquest of Asia Minor UPDATE June 19 2020: - fixed some of the winning conditions bugs that were reported - added support for difficulty levels -- switching the AI between Medium, Hard, and Very Hard will now often result in effects beyond gather rate (e.g., more troops garrisoned in enemy towers, better starting teach for enemy, etc.) - Enemy units that spawn and attack now usually march in formation - Added wall towers to fortified cities and settlements I will shortly be posting the next set of five missions. Thanks for all the comments and private messages. And here are some screen shots: UPDATE June 25 2020: Added the next set of 5 missions, comprising Alexander's Balkan Campaign. Features a naval map, new scripts and triggers, and another siege. Enjoy! Some screenshots (minor spoilers): Some screen shots from missions 11-15: Shots from 16 and 17, the conquest of Tyre:

  4. I'm disappointed No reference to DE? Come on Is there a patch for that? Yeah I meant the latter. Using the phenotype feature one can make the units alternate between male and female actors.

  5. @Crea, you're completely right, the game is quite sexist. The problem is that history is rather sexist, and 0 A.D. generally values realism and historical accuracy. That said, I'm not quite happy with 0 A.D.'s current situation either. A minor improvement in the development version is that female citizens can now initiate all structure foundations, just like (male) citizen soldiers, but yes, that's just a small step and more has to be done. Unfortunately, while identifying what's wrong is relatively easy, the difficulty is how to solve something properly. Citizens as in citizens (i.e. citizenship), or citizens as in 0 A.D. (i.e. workers)? If the former, all, if the latter, none: just male workers is probably more realistic. As for the aura, just delete it. It's not only sexist, but also unrealistic and without historical justification. Moreover, I doubt the AI understands how to make use of it. Yes, slavery existed, and yes, slavery was important. However, slavery is not the only form of labour, and not everyone owned slaves. Society was largely rural, agriculture the main form of employment, and most of it done by men working their own land, or poorer people working that of richer landowners. As for Han China, there were indeed only small numbers of slaves, and most of them household slaves working indoors, however, corvee (of ordinary people) and forced labour (of convicts, debtors, prisoners, etc.) were very important there. There are numerous examples of women having political power (often through a husband, brother, or son), and even a few of women leading armies or being present at the battlefield (e.g. Ptolemy's sister and wife Arsinoë was with him during the Battle of Raphia (Polybius V.84.1)). However, women actually fighting is something quite different. Actually it really does not. In Greek society women were kept indoors, while men worked the land. And citizenship implied political rights. Mercenaries were foreigners, not citizens, and having soldiers quarry stone or mine ore is rather unrealistic too. Anyway, in 0 A.D. female citizens have different work rates than male citizens. In my opinion male workers should be introduced with exactly the same values as their female counterparts, for all factions. In Age of Empires II, there were no differences between male and female villagers either.

  6. According to wikipedia there are quite a few examples of women fighting on the battlefield. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_in_ancient_warfare#2nd_century_BCE So why not make a certain percentage of fighters female. I mean we do have 15 variants of a mace

  7. Hello everyone, As said in the "Spidermonkey 52 upgrade" thread, we will (very soon) be moving from VS15 to VS17. This upgrade is necessary to support Spidermonkey version 68 and 78 (our target at the moment), which require newer versions of the standard. The Windows autobuild will soon be switched to this compiler, so please report any issues you might encounter. If you were compiling 0 A.D. yourself on Windows, you will need to download VS2017 Community Edition. VS2017 comes with its own dependency installer, you ought to be good to go with the "Desktop development with C++" option. At the moment, we have some issues with debug tests, but that ought to be fixed quickly and the rest of the game ought to work fine. You may also report issues here: https://trac.wildfiregames.com/ticket/5862 Edit: update-workspaces.bat will already generate solutions that ought to be compatible.

  9. We should just have female and male workers with the same stats. This seems more accurate. I think working on fields or in mines was more a concern of class/caste than of sex in these times. Regarding female warriors: I lack the historic knowledge about that. But it seems that newer research doesn't support this thesis that in the past (without some exceptions) only men were warriors throughout the history. (not sure if this research applies on 0ads timeframe) Edit: @Sundiata might know something about that topic as well.

  10. Could be also based on majority votes or rank-based-voting. For rank-based-voting if something is tied the final two items get another vote. If no winner a vote until agreement in chat is reached. There could also be votes for "default" settings since I believe that 90% of the games are default setting games (200 pop, mainland, no relics, conquest victory, etc.).

  12. Here ya go: https://github.com/ChronAb/Broken_Empire_-_Refined_Combat_mod Is far as what's in there, the meat of the mod is in simulation/components (spoiler-ed for ugly wall of text) : If anyone wants to try to (re)use any of this in other mods or projects, then go for it. I'd appreciate it if you try to give me a heads up just to inflate my ego, but you don't need my permission. Also if you have suggestions for how to fix any other problems I've identified drop me a comment (or a pull request) on GitHub. I don't always have the liberty to keep a watchful eye on these forums. Edit: I added a copyright license affirming that this work is open source (and as close to public domain as I feel comfortable). Also, like I said I would, I've updated the armor system with some new parameters. I think its performing more like I intended now: very melee infantry favored.

  15. Women were better considered in Celtic societies but it is mostly about property right, divorce and inheritance. I do not know how it could be included in the game. And even like this, it is still an inequalitarian society. However, there is a debate about the Druids, Irish mythology saying the women cannot be Druids but the Roman accounts talk about some women as Druids. Some scholars argue that the Romans could have misinterpreted the diversity of the religious class and labeled every priest and priestess as a Druid, other scholars argue that the Irish connection with the La Tène is problematic and that we should not accept anything from the mythology as truths in application everywhere a Celtic language was spoken. For me there is no trouble to take a side in this debate and to portray female Druid. Finally, there are some burials of rich women and some accounts of ruling women in La Tène and British Iron Age culture. So it could be possible to have some females as nobles or officers, however I do not know which purpose they could serve in the game for the moment. There is no proof of female warrior in the Celtic culture, therefore these nobles were in place for different reasons.
