Hello everyone, I think it's time I reveal a "secret project" I've been working on occasionally: a “Grand Strategy” campaign mod for A25. Because our UI is flexible, and because campaign data is just JSON, we can do quite a lot in terms of modding. My intention here is to do something somewhat similar to Rise of Nations' Conquer the World campaign, though with some twists. The code is over at the github repo: https://github.com/wraitii/0ad_grand_strat . If you want to help out, the easiest is to make PRs or issues over there. The end-game is to merge something back for A26 or later, depending on advancement. As you can see, the mod is currently unfinished: it's technically playable, and some of the core mechanics are there, but it needs a ton of polish and quite a few features (& well, testing) before it's properly done. Though at the moment new core code in 0 A.D. itself isn't necessary, some things might be easier to do there. Screenshots: You can download a .pyromod from GitHub. Changelog:8 points

Here is the first 'Release Candidate' of Alpha 25 - Yaunā We've entered Commit Freeze, which means we only now fix Release Blocker issues that we might yet find. As of now, there are 2 pending commits about minor things. We've heard of some OOS reports, so please read the instructions below carefully on how to efficiently report those. Downloads - Current bundles are for SVN revision 25799 Linux data and build MacOS Windows Things to note: Translations are not complete & may be buggy -> Play in English for now. Mind your mods -> they might introduce issues or Out Of Sync. Save your A24 config file somewhere, ideally. Notable changes since the last bundle: Increase to elephant & ram turn rates to help movement We've switched the mod key to A25 so the mod downloader will show nothing A number of small UI/code fixes Currently known issues: We have reports of Out of Sync errors: please read below. We have reports of issues with the replay filter, but haven't been able to confirm There are a few others that shouldn't affect play much, see the Milestone for details. What to do if I have an error or notice something weird? Post your commands.txt (replay) and the interestinglog.html file from your folder. You can also reply to this thread. What to do if the game crashes? Update your crashlog.dmp and crashlog.txt see https://trac.wildfiregames.com/wiki/GameDataPaths What to do if I have an Out Of Sync? You should go in your logs folder, find the replay (commands.txt at least), the mainlog/interestinglog and find the OOS dump folder. Zip all these files and upload them here. We need the reports from two players to compare them: One OOS and one non-OOS players at least should upload their oos_dump files. Things you may want to test (non-exhaustive) Launch a random game Launch a skirmish. Introduction. I want to discuss game modes, scenarios, random maps and skirmish, which will bring this new version of the gameplay, including adapting a version to Multiplayer. 0 A.D Grand campaign is based in Conquer the World (CTW) the single-player campaign mode of Rise of Nations. It features a Risk-like turn-based global strategy mode, where nations may conduct diplomacy, redeploy armies and try to expand their empires by conquering new territories. Conflicts are then resolved using the real-time game engine. In Conquer the World, you not only command in battles, but you also command an entire empire. You start in your nation's capital which depends on where your capital is located (for example, Romans start in Italy) or if set at random, you can begin at any place of the world (e.g. the Egyptians can begin in Hispania). I don't know if there will be a random mode in 0 a.d. Grand campaign. During your turn, you may forge alliances, make peace treaties and declare war. You can also spend tribute to upgrade your territory and make the area far stronger (more cities and defenses). RoN have the features of : Attacking barbarians always begins a Scenario. Attacking a capital, a strength 5+ territory, or with allies always begins a Conquest battle. Otherwise, the battle can be either a conquest or scenario. Attacking with a different number of supporting armies can change whether it is a scenario or conquest, while attacking with a different army can change one scenario for another. If you choose to end your turn without attacking, you gain tribute (Maximum of 100). The first time you press "Next Turn", you gain only 25 tribute. Then, you gain 50 tribute, then 75 and finally 100. RoN CTW modes. Scenarios are special missions during Conquer the World campaigns in RoN. War party Destroy 25 enemy units within 15 minutes. You are not allowed to capture cities. The enemy starts with an army about as powerful as yours, so try not to engage it. There are scattered pairs of farms with vulnerable civilians. It may be possible to pick off civilians who are working at woodcutters/mines and not too close to cities. (Use "Hold Fire" stance to avoid triggering the alarm too early.) Melee Two barbarian nations, which start without armies Nomad Player starts with a normal city and a big army with lots of heavy cavalry. Three barbarian nations have no cities, only supply wagons. They initially have small armies but can generate more units from their supply wagons (up to a per-nation limit). Sudden Death There are two barbarian nations. Player can defeat them by capturing any city (thus, "sudden death") Barbarian rally Survive 15 minutes. Start with a city in the center of the map, along with a barracks (?). Tricky in ancient age (all research that normally requires knowledge is very expensive; enemies get catapults but player doesn't get cavalry; cannot form a Government to heal or bribe) Barbarians at the gates Fight three age-behind nations, which are allied against you. Survive 25 minutes. The barbarians in this scenario use special barbarian variants of each foot unit. Their attacks are disorganized and nearly continuous. Wheel and deal You must defeat three barbarian nations. Everyone starts off equally, with a normal city and a scout. Initially, you are at war with the other three and they are at peace with each other. However, real-time Diplomacy is allowed: you can negotiate for peace or allies, then backstab and declare war by clicking the dove icon. The barbarians may also decide to attack each other. Supply train You have a medium-size army and three scouts. To win you only need to survive 5 minutes, which is not difficult (especially once your scouts gain the ability to hide in the Medieval age). However, you can gain a better bonus card by destroying supply wagons that are moving through the map. Tactics You have a large army and must capture the enemy's capital. The enemy has small groups of units scattered throughout the map, which will try to slow your assault and flank your siege weapons. If you capture another enemy city, it will be assimilated immediately and you will gain several civilians. This may give you a chance to heal (by garrisoning) or reinforce. However, you are not allowed to form a government, and the time limit will keep ticking. Field battle Destroy enemy buildings (2 barracks). Start with a medium-size, heavy-tilted army (enlightenment age: general, explorer, 9 light inf, 7 heavy inf, 4 ranged cav, 3 light cav, 4 heavy cav). Ambush Capture enemy capital in 120 minutes Enemy appears, with cavalry, "out of nowhere" Surprise attack Similar to the barbarian scenario "Barbarian Rally". Survive for 15 minutes. Disorganized waves of attackers will arrive throughout the battle from the same 2-3 directions. The map is explored, and you start with a barracks and stable. Towers can protect your civilians by killing enemies, providing a safe haven, and letting you research attrition technologies. However, the enemy will eventually start bringing siege weapons and supply wagons. This scenario becomes more difficult throughout the ages, as your units become more expensive, and enemy units become more powerful relative to your static defenses. Guerilla warfare Like in the barbarian scenario "War party", you must kill 25 units within 15 minutes, and are not allowed to capture cities. However, there are key differences. To your advantage, you have a General, and the enemy starts with only a tiny army. To your disadvantage, the enemy capital has a pair of towers at their capital. You also start with a supply wagon, and it is crucial to keep the supply wagon alive. It can heal your troops when outside enemy territory; it can prevent attrition damage; and it must be alive in order for extra troops to appear (at about 5 minutes and 10 minutes into the scenario). With luck, you may discover the enemy's second city while it is still under construction. If you kill the civilian but leave the construction site intact, their economy will be crippled and they'll keep sending citizens to your slaughter. However, they also won't establish as many civilian work sites for you to attack. 0A.D version. in 0 A.D there would be the relic and wonder mode, matches. where you have to fulfill objectives. in addition to the conditions that are already in our game. Proposal. Defend wonder Mode. Attack and capture wonder. Capture points or spots. (similar to TW Rome 2.) there is a similar mode in EE II. Build wonder. Rebel Mode.(one of your cities is captured y you must pay tribute and build an army) similar to scenario Oppression from Yamato campaign in AoE I.2 points

Indeed. TBH I will need more layers, and probably an underlying 'map' layer, then some specific 2D textures for each provinces on top. For now, the drawing capabilities of the GUI are limited, and this is essentially a hack. But with it being 2D, it's not really resource intensive either.2 points

The problem is mostly caused with incompatibilities between types of NAT each router has, only way to be sure everybody can join you is to set up port forwarding.1 point

This mod looks beautiful! I will play more but I already see its potential, and for sure in the future a campaign based on it should be added to the main game, and modders will reuse this code for greater diversity in their mods. Wraitii congratulations1 point

I am going to make suggestions, I don't know if they are contemplated. List of suggestions. the mode for now can be boring only one type of scenario. there should be a siege mode and an invasion mode. i will explain the details later. capture marvel mode in some provinces. A brief of the mode for now I assume there are only a few factions in play or to select and play. I guess it's too obvious and you should already know that. territories must have visible names. zoom mode (zoom in, zoom out). the economic part is not available yet, the diplomatic part is not available either, for now there is only one possible character to move. for the same reason there is no diplomacy yet. it would be excellent to manage more territories. save and load mode.1 point

I'll do it myself, but Kate can still leave her point of view.1 point

@Yekaterina You can try and make a video to see how it looks. I guess you need a custom build.1 point

That would be nice if each version will generate its own folder. For example revision 25799 It should have its own settings folder, named under the revision name.1 point

Bronze is metal. A metal alloy to be exact. You can't "mine" bronze. It's made of copper and tin. What could be done instead is just replace the iron anvil icons for metal with copper-ish ingots. This would hint at copper/bronze but keep the name generic enough to cover all metals used in the period.1 point

Yes indeed, as has already been mentioned, it is the Newbie Rush Observation and Commentary (NROC) mod, created by the absolute genius - @Langbart - and building on some of the darn fine work done historically by @ffm2 and @nani Without it, I think it's fair to say that 0AD Newbie Rush wouldn't be anywhere near as much fun to watch, and I'd be well and truly shafted!1 point

The idea comes from the visibility mod by @ffm2. It's a hack and may not work on some scenario maps, but it's great for lobby games that are mostly taking place on skirmish and random maps. Starting at changeset 25634, mods like this no longer require the lobby compatibility hacks of @nani . So the mod should work fine with A25 in lobby games. vividcolors.pyromod1 point

I would suggest two: one that they can start looking (but where we're explicit that further changes might be necessary) and one where we say it's String Freeze, go crazy. At the very least, the first one could tell them that they might need to clear a few hours in their schedule in the upcoming works. Certainly did not help I mean this is more or less what we're doing, but the fear is that people might mistake test bundles for actual alpha bundles (which have been tested), and then report bugs after-the-fact, which will simply waste everyone's time. Likewise, someone who doesn't know the game might get the impression that it's buggy, when they in fact just downloaded an alpha of the alpha. We're definitely going for a more porous definition than that, but it's partly because 'release blocker' is very arbitrary anyways. The plan is a minimum of 1 week, but 2 is more likely. Unfortunately, we have some pressure to move forward as we're stuck with a single SVN branch.1 point

If on windows, could be that the network is set to public, while it should be set to private. else the firewall might block the game if not properly configured.1 point
