Enrique
After some time of inactivity I decided to finish the ptolemies sculptures set. I think 7 will be enough. This is a render with AO. Female dress will be playercolored and probably male skirt (blue and white variations are in the same texture)I hope to jump soon to the buildings and finish the non-fancy texture.

Pureon
Very nice work Enrique, I wish I could model humans/animals as well as you can!Lets see what they look like in-game
Enrique
Thanks! :-)I already had a rigged human basemesh I made some time ago. And the face was an high poly one from a Nefertiti bust I was working before joining WFG. The rest was just making the pose and decimate the model as much as I could without looking wonky. I still have to bake AO before commiting, but I'm working in CCs concepts.... I couldn't resist :-PI'm going to need some help with the non fancy texture though. Can't find a good wall color texture. And some kind of egyptian tiles would be useful. Suggestions are very welcome

wraitii
I'm raising a slight issue on the fishing boat for the Ptolemies. While from what I read it appears their galleys were basically greek (see Tessarakonteres, though this is probably as mythical as it is real, or the next source which, while really old, is really interesting), and their merchant ships mostly similar to what we could find on the mediterranean at the time, I am unable to find conclusive evidence that their fishing boats had changed much (old source here quotes herodotes, but it doesn't seem to talk about fishing boats). Most sources I've found do not discuss the issue.Given the shapes of the other fishing ships, I'm thinking perhaps we should give them traditional looking papyrus boats (such as here), rather than more generic looking boats. It somebody has some accurate information on their actual fishing ships, I am interested though.(basically, in the style of the generic fishing ship but more "egyptian" looking)edit: basically, something like the attached image (was bored out of my mind this morning)
Ludo38
@Lordgood : Cool to see that you're making progresses in Blender! For your texture, as you probably not yet know how to UV map easily, I suggest you set your texture on "Object" in the "Mapping" section of texture settings. Often it got me satisfying result for a quick texturing test. Also, this texture needs a rescale, maybe x10. If its size is for now set to 1 in X, Y and Z, enter 10.Well, these are advices from a newbie in Blender ! I guess others will have better to suggest !By the way, that "Merge vertices" is very interesting. I haven't used it yet. I am meeting a few other basic problems in Blender, and will discuss them out of this topic.@Enrique : waow, those statues are super cool...Just one note : the Anubis looks great but from what I've seen until now of Egypt, Anubis statues are often small, at least not at the scale of a sphinx. That maybe needs to be checked, but I think this Anubis should be almost twice smaller.I'm going to need some help with the non fancy texture though. Can't find a good wall color texture. And some kind of egyptian tiles would be useful. Suggestions are very welcomeYou're searching for colored walls ? You mean egyptian walls with colors painted on their coating ? Do you need references or actual textures ?Same for "tiles" : you mean you search for roof tiles ? ... I've seen nothing like that. If you mean tileable egyptian walls textures, that too I haven't seen... But I'll see if I can find helpful material.EDIT : could the Agora movie be a useful source ? It's set in Alexandria in the late 4th century... Here's an aerial photo of the set.
Ludo38
In France we have a lot of good production of History-related cartoons, and a recent one that I have at home is "Sur les terres d'Horus" ("On Horus Lands"). It's happening in the time of Ramses II, but in case some pictures can be an inspiration, I post some excerpts here, quickly collected on the web. If you want more, I can scan some specific details, architecture, costumes, etc). The author did a good job at picturing the period (though it's not Ptolemaic). I read that she got help from Egyptologists for this cartoon. If those pictures are definitely not useful for the Ptolemaic period, I can remove them to keep the topic fully-Ptolemaic. You History specialists tell me!
Ludo38
And my third post in a row ! I just found a cool page with very detailed war ships from the Ptolemaic Egypt ! http://www.navistory...ptolemaique.phpHere is a "Pentere Lagide" :now a "Octère Lagide" :Plus a huge "30" oars rows :I haven't read all the text, but it says that the Roman ships were much more dynamic in comparison to these huge Ptolemaic "elephants of the sea" That seems a weak point to be used when we will need to give balance to the civ in the game.I recommend you check the Ancient ships page on the same site : http://www.navistory.com/pages/antiquite.phpThere are useful matter for more than the Ptolemaic Egypt.
LordGood
Nice Ludo, They'll make for some interesting reconstructions I'm sure. Haven't looked over all of Enrique's sources just yet. Once we establish an atmosphere to work out of I feel like the artists will have a good grasp on this.
Enrique
edit: basically, something like the attached image (was bored out of my mind this morning)That's looking like a great start. I like the main colors too. Do you plan to keep working on it?You're searching for colored walls ? You mean egyptian walls with colors painted on their coating ? Do you need references or actual textures ?Same for "tiles" : you mean you search for roof tiles ? ... I've seen nothing like that. If you mean tileable egyptian walls textures, that too I haven't seen... But I'll see if I can find helpful material.I was talking about "poor" structures wall textures. I leave a shot of what I'm aiming right now, trying to find the correct main colours for the civilization. And I was referring to "floor tiles". Those cartoon references look great they also depict the structures painted in white with the ornamental paintings over the white... I always thought that their main colour would be a yellowish tone
LordGood
Those look awesome Enrique, I like those left two textures.the square and round support beams on top of eachother are messing with my head though xP
Enrique
Those look awesome Enrique, I like those left two textures.the square and round support beams on top of eachother are messing with my head though xPHehe, thanks. Dont worry about the beams, that is just a placeholder model to test the textures on something. The in-wall beams seems to be a recurrent feature on houses though, those will probably stay. Mythos_Ruler
You could have a couple of "dirty wall" textures in the same texture file for some minor variation. I did that with the Greek houses.
wraitii
Enrique: I likely can, yes. Beyond the need for proper UV/texture, I'm not sure how to handle the rows. Should I keep one similarly to the existing fishing ships, use what appears to be the "historical" way (ie pushing on a pole, but that would look weird on very deep water, wouldn't it?) or use some sort of single-oar sculling (probably the best bet here, but I'd need to give a good go at animation. Can certainly be done, imo)?
wraitii
Some better concept for the fishing boat. If this is good, I'll give a definite go at proper UV-ing/texturing (using free textures, could somebody point me to some website for that?) and animating (getting a crash loading the rigged model into the game for some reason).(I'm pretty sure the reed texture I've used is bamboo, so papyrus would probably be a bit less yellow, more like in the first one though).edit: obviously beyond any mesh change that would be required. plumo
For historical material I recommend the comic books of Alix (by Jacques Martin). I'm not sure it is allowed to scan my copies, but it is a must-buy for historylovers.
Enrique
I propose this as Civ Emblem.Source of Art.Licence CC by Ancien Art userhttp://www.flickr.co...ect/4864514433/CoinsSource Coinhttp://www.flickr.co...ect/4787570933/Hey Lion, I was looking for your emblem artwork in order to add it to some shields I'm currently working on, but when double checking the source images that you used to make the emblem, I found they're copyrighted. You can see it clearly when you scroll down the image page at the bottom right on "additional information" (It's shown here in spanish and it says "todos los derechos reservados": all rights reserved)
