abian
I've always found the "Random" option for "Map Type" in the Match Setup a bit confusing (it could mean choosing randomly, with or without filtering criteria, among the manually generated maps). I wonder if this could happen to more people and if you would consider another name better. Some names that come to mind: Procedural Map(s) Dynamic Map(s) Scripted Map(s) Algorithmic Map(s) Randomly Generated Map(s) Randomized Map(s) Auto-Generated Map(s) Generative Map(s) Ever-Changing Map(s) Unique Map(s) Infinite Map(s) Unrepeatable Map(s) Unpredictable Map(s) ... (I don't have a clear preference, but maybe Auto-Generated?)

I think people new to the game don't understand but will figure it out quickly enough. I like "Dyanamic" the best, but why not a tooltip that offers a minimal explanation? Dynamic or Random doesn't really say anything to a new player. Neither does "Skirmish". Having "Skirmish" as a map type is really pointless, imo. A tooltip that offers a minimal explanation would be good, or just having the explanation appended in the right pane where "Map Type: Random/Skirmish" is displayed.

RangerK
I agree. I'd go with "Generated Maps."

wowgetoffyourcellphone Posted Saturday at 17:10 Report Share Posted Saturday at 17:10 Procedural Maps or Generated Maps are my two preferences. I agree that "Random" here is misleading and not very accurate. The only reason this term is being used is inertia.

A lot of modern RTS games don't have procedural maps. They're of the "Skirmish map" variety. Age of Empires games use "Random maps" I think, but again, that's the reason 0 A.D. chose the term. I think Procedural Maps or Generated Maps are good terms though.

real_tabasco_sauce Posted Saturday at 19:56 Report Share Posted Saturday at 19:56 (edited) the ones i found all use "random maps", but maybe we are just the first to break from the status quo. I think its originally because resources are randomly placed. edit: that being said, the juice might not be worth the squeeze as there are a lot of "Random" to change to "Generated" Edited Saturday at 19:58 by real_tabasco_sauce

Technically it is correct, but it sounds like No man's sky. https://nomanssky.fandom.com/wiki/Procedural_generation In fact the average player imagines that, in fact I once said that we used procedural techniques in the FB Spanish community for the shields in the game. They imagined many things related to no man's sky. Edited Saturday at 20:14 by Lion.Kanzen
abian Posted Saturday at 20:30 Author Report Share Posted Saturday at 20:30 Picking up on the comments, and especially alre's, my current suggestion would be for the player to choose between the “Load (an) Official/Default Map” and “Generate (a) Random Map” actions (or similar). jonbaer Posted Saturday at 23:11 Report Share Posted Saturday at 23:11 The other (small) annoying thing with Random maps is there is no way to grab the seed. For example if you end up in a procedural map that you very much enjoy it's a bit of a pain to dig down to find the seed (and no real way to regenerate). This is not a very common case - but I think at one point I recommended you should be able to "Save Game" (save game state) and also "Save Map" (save map setup).

This has been suggested in the past and no one has addressed it. Maybe @trompetin17or @Vantha can take this.
