  1. Again, popup window shows only base stats, including base gather rates. Those can be upgraded with economic upgrades. Yes, they do. Each damage type is checked against its resistance type. If an unit does 10 hack and 10 pierce damage against an unit that has 50% hack and 40% pierce resistance, the unit will take: 5 hack + 6 pierce = 11 total damage.
  2. Yes, we need more straightforward access to units stats, optimally with upgrades. The popup screen only shows base stats for an unit, and you have to hover over a very small sword and shield icon to see real stats. I like how Age of Mythology did it. Clean and to the point. Doesn't take a lot of screen space. Of course, it also shows attack and damage in a similar way to AoE2.
  3. Halberdiers have more hack damage than most other spearmen line units. You can kill rams with them if sword cavalry is not around.
  4. Han and Kushites also have way too many unit classes to choose from. So, you need to know on which units to focus your limited resources. Romans and Spartans, on the other hand, you know what to train from the start of a game.
  5. Persians as I don't really like cavalry and archer civilizations. My playing style revolves around masses of strong melee units and good siege, because I like to destroy buildings. The easiest? Romans, for the above reason.
  6. The solution is to implement a proper target priority system. Targeted unit gets far enough away? Stop. Enemy units nearby? Attack them instead. The main question is: how much is "far enough away"? Alternative is to reduce the target priority on enemy heroes to a minimum. That way, you'd have to manually target a hero 99% of the time.

  8. Now for something a bit different. The games here will be played in A23b, with the intention of highlighting AI differences between this and later versions. I struggled a bit in my first recorded game, mainly because of a lack of worker counters and Call to Arms. The AI is much more difficult, though. It simply doesn't stop making units. Anyway, enjoy the game, assuming you can watch it RomansVsSele_H.zip
  9. Athenians versus the Kushites. Dedicated to our new member @HeWhoWanders. AtheniansVSKush_H.zip
  10. It's not free, it costs resources to upgrade Elite Hastatus or Triarius to a Centurion. And, you have to have an elite unit to begin with. Again, it's not free. It takes time to get a promotion inside a Barracks. During this time, the unit wasn't working. It's just another feature that you don't have to use if you don't want to. Plenty of them in the base game already.
  11. Correct. It's basic rank spearman, just a different model. Spears are slower than javs, though. Marian Reforms is powerful, but it's mostly a flavor tech. You can build multiple Army camps near your opponent's territory and train swordsmen that are almost as good as Marian Legionaries.
  12. Just relax man, the AI sucks when you get to a remotely decent level. You just seem to be lacking fundamentals and you haven't spent enough time with the game to go with the flow. Watch some of my games. The key in this game is not to attack relentlessly like the AI does and lose your units needlessly. The soldiers are a part of your economy, you can use them to chop wood or mine stone and metal. Keep women on food. Watch some replays of pros, also. Install the "feldmap" mod, it contains some popular maps that pros use.
  13. One vanilla 27.1 replay with Macedonians. MaceVSAthens.zip
  14. Perhaps it's inertia from A23 days? The Fortress used to be the ultimate building you'd build to access some of your civ's best units/unique techs. In A24, it got demoted to a strong defensive building, but some things remained. I don't think we should change anything, though. WTF is a very strong tech that needs to be hard to get. Unique techs for some civs (like Mace, Han and Romans) make sense in a Fortress, as they are also very strong. Heroes can also turn the tide in a battle. Seleucid heroes being trainable from CC is just a civilization advantage.
  15. Yes, when it's you against a team of AIs. Why? I am positively surprised when I see that the AI has launched a counter attack while my troops were out destroying his CCs. It's not fun to always win flawlessly. The defensive buildings are generally not worth it in 0 A. D. The Fort is an exception, but only if you get the Murder holes technology. Four rams can destroy two unguarded Forts with no support. One Siege Catapult can do the same, given enough time.
  16. Yes, the Defensive one is actually the biggest threat since it booms before attacking. Other AIs just ruin their economy by wasting units that should be working.
  17. Aggressive - attacks early and more often. Defensive - attacks late with huge force, builds more towers and Forts earlier. Balanced - somewhere in between the two.
  18. How would this be balanced? You'd just have an useless unit that is somewhat good against cavalry, but takes full damage from everything. How about you try and counter them with anything other than cavalry and CS spearmen? Why would they have weakness against spearmen, anyway?
  19. If you have additional berries nearby. Otherwise, not worth the cost.
  20. Well, as borg said, it depends on the situation you're in. If you are doing a boom, get level 1 woodcutting as early as possible. Get level 1 farming once you transition to farms. If you are being rushed, priority is to defend yourself, so make soldiers. Get level 2 as soon as you hit the town phase.
  21. 1) Download the source files from play0ad.com 2) Check the requirements for building from source for your distro. 3) Build a game somewhere on your Games drive. 4) After that, run the pyrogenesis executable.
  22. Pierce and hack armor upgrades first, then damage depending on most used unit. I usually play Rome or Sparta, so it's melee damage first.
  23. Yes, Temple aura stacks with Battlefield Medicine, assuming the soldiers are idle.
  24. Depending on your strategy, you have two ways to heal your troops. Active would be to focus on healers and research their upgrades. Passive would be to focus on garrisoning and Temple auras. Always focus resources only on one way in a match. Most good players focus on the passive way, as healers are far too fragile.
  25. Attack move command is issued automatically for the selected units after they drop off resources, at the point where you right-clicked while holding the Call to Arms hotkey.
