Hello everyone, This is an update on the progress of the Alpha 27 release. After extensive deliberation, the team has decided to abort the release process for the foreseeable future. As some of you know, we've been in a "feature freeze" for the past 3 months. This period, during which we halt all new code merging except for crucial bug fixes, is typically a final step before a release. Unfortunately, progress on the release has been slower than anticipated, and Alpha 27 is still several weeks away. Some of the outstanding issues include: Acquiring the necessary macOS certificates for signing the packages Completing the trailer for the announcement, and finishing the announcement itself More testing is potentially needed, and some important bug fixes are not yet merged. The balance of A27 has not been extensively tested and refined. The time it takes to actually release (uploading packages, informing maintainers, etc.) is potentially more than any of the team can commit to right now. Our current pace on these matters is unsustainable. Following a vote, we have chosen to abort the release and refocus. This decision wasn't made lightly, but we believe it's in the best interest of 0 A.D.'s long-term health. We will use this time to: Merge improvements that have been developed during the feature freeze, such as optimizations and further fixes. Identify and address the issues that have hindered the current release process, as we cannot hope to release in the future without fixing them. We will likely come back to the community with more information on this last point and potentially requests for help. We realize that this news may be disappointing. We thank you for your patience, understanding, and ongoing support. On behalf of everyone at Wildfire Games, Wraitii2 points

This is one example: reading the same poem in ancient Chinese. Han Dynasty is looking at version one or two. https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV15K4y1k7YD? https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1GU4y1L7Zn? The closest thing to this is Klingonese The biggest difference is that all modern Mandarin characters end with a vowel. You always hear a vowel at the end, just like French (you don't pronounce consonant letters at the end). We have to thank the Manchurians for this change. Whereas these ancient Han people add consonants at the end and that made it sound quite discordant.2 points

All of the female units are speaking perfect Mandarin, the official pronunciation that you would see in formal news reports. Half of the male voices have some North-Eastern accent. The other half also speak perfect Mandarin. One might be able to tell that it was a software generating the speeches, however, it is not very obvious and I purposefully chose complete phrases that do not emphasise flaws of the software. This software is being used by many content creators to read out scripts and these voices are widely accepted on all Chinese social platforms. I believe that a native speaker might not be able to generate voices as accurately as the software, because they would be subject to accents and mispronunciations; very few people can speak perfect Mandarin without any regional accent or dialectal influence. The language spoken in the Han Dynasty was obviously not Mandarin, but it's difficult to know exactly how things were pronounced back then and it would make absolutely zero sense to most modern players. It might be closer to one of the southern dialects that most people cannot understand well; there are videos of theoretical pronunciations used in the Han Dynasty but the comments are always "this sounds so scary / frugal / discordant / confusing". On the other hand, if we use Mandarin, everyone can understand what's going on and they would feel more immersion and intimacy with the units. In conclusion, I think the software generated voices are passable. It is the exact words and phrases that we need tweaking.2 points

It really depends on what you like. Tigris and Euphrates is a classic game set in Mesopotamia. It focusses on heavy area control with occasional wars that can completely level cities you have carefully cultivated. Concordia is a fantastic game set during the Pax Romana period. You establish trade networks and try to dominate different Roman provinces. Hannibal and Hamilcar is a card driven wargame that models the 1st and 2nd Punic Wars. The games can be long yet in theory a good sort of long. Not for the fainthearted. Command and Colours Ancients is part of a simple but classic wargame system that serves as the basis for the more popular Memoir '44. You can recreate a variety of historical engagements with it. Paolo Mori's Caesar! is apparently an incredibly well made game for representing Pompey and Caesar's war in only 20 minutes. Also, if you like Pandemic, there is a Pandemic variant representing the migration period, where you play as various Romans trying to stave off the barbarian threats. I especially enjoy the fact that the game models the historical paths the various tribes took.2 points

Here are some voices generated by @Yekaterina all of these tracks by typing the Chinese phrase into Luyinzhushou (a software that reads converts Chinese text to voices with selectable personalities). She is a native speaker of Chinese. The voices feature a range of accents and dialects to reflect the vastness and variety of Han Dynasty. A 21st century Chinese person should be familiar with these phrases. @AIEND can you check them? chinesevoice.zip2 points

The Sasanian Empire officially known as Eranshahr was the last Iranian empire before the early Muslim conquests of the 7th–8th centuries AD. Sassanid Empire is the medieval representation of the Persian or Iranian society and civilization so it is hoped that Mod Makers and those who can make mods make this medieval civilization. The Sassanids, who succeeded the Parthians, were recognized as one of the leading world powers alongside its neighboring rival the Byzantine Empire, or Eastern Roman Empire, for a period of more than 400 years. Following the division of the Roman Empire in 395, the Byzantine Empire, with its capital at Constantinople, continued as Persia's principal western enemy, and main enemy in general. Hostilities between the two empires became more frequent The Sassanids, similar to the Roman Empire, were in a constant state of conflict with neighboring kingdoms and nomadic hordes. So many thanks to@Stan`1 point

On topic, I do agree that Cappadocian is probably much better than nearestern, yes.1 point

What's the use of having interesting names if the maps don't look like what their name suggests? I don't think what I was suggesting doubled the map count. If anything there would be a small selection of general shapes and layouts (about a dozen), then you'd choose a "biome" which turns the map into somewhere specific. Seems more organized and more thought out than what we currently have.1 point

That's the point. That's how most of the languages are designed, almost nobody speaks ancient chinese, ancient greek, meroitic, latin in a common fashion. That's one of the features of the game. I personnaly loved the voices from Age of Mythology because of that.1 point

Thanks for clarifying. It's better to postpone than a bad release.1 point
