  1. I am creating this post to announce possibly the biggest 0ad tournament of 2021! There is no need to get overexcited, after all there are few contenders. The tournament is invitation only and currently all the spots have been given away. So this tread is mainly interesting if you would like to follow the tournament. I have decided for an 8 player invitational tournament, because it is easier to organize than a bigger one and with fewer players the skill difference between the players is hopefully less extreme. I hope that this tournament can create some interest for 1v1s and that it helps @derekO with organizing his tournament. Finally I hope this tournament provides a repository for high level gameplay. The tournament is a double elimination without repeated final and each round is a best of 3 played on balanced mainland. Every matchup starts with faction A vs. faction B and in the second game the factions are reversed, meaning that in the second game the participants will play the faction that their opponent previously played. This means that we hope that either one player shows his dominance or both players show which faction comes out on top. In this format, if you have a weaker faction in the first game, then it hurts your opponent in the second game as he gets that faction in the second game. I hope this means that also some weaker factions are seeing action. If you manage to pull back the score after a loss, then the 3rd and deciding game will be a mirror match. When players have equal number of won series, the factions in these mirror matches will be determined (pseudo) random (Luck has decided that this will be Athenians for 3 out 4 games). Since it is a random faction, I hope a more diverse set of factions gets some action. When one player has won series in the winner bracket than his opponent, then that player gets an advantage: Namely he can choose what faction will be played in the mirror matchup. Seedings are done (pseudo) random and the brackets are in the attachment. I will try to cover some of these series and I aim to make a playlist of that on youtube. I would love if there would be other youtube content creators and who can help with making a complete playlist of the tournament. Participants are @chrstgtr@Dakara Dakeyras @felixix (Berhudar) @LetswaveaBook @Player of 0AD (Weirdjokes) @ValihrAnt and @vinme. When series are finished, one of the participants should post the replay files in this tread so the result can be verified and others can watch some high level approaches to the game. The players should contact their opponents in the brackets and can then plan their games. Anyone that would like to cover some of the 14 series would be invited to contact me. Finally, I have thought about a great opportunity for the participants of this tournament. If you participate in the tournament, you will have the opportunity to upgrade your current version of windows entirely for free to fedora 35, provided you have fitting hardware. Windows users should want to miss out on that opportunity, should they? brackets.pdf

  3. @OptimusShepard Thanks again for the report. v3.0 is out now, which should work on widescreens (hopefully) @Radiotraining @Lion.Kanzen As you can see I switched to a rectangular logo background and gave it a bit more space. I hope that looks better now

  4. Delenda Est gives archers to the Republican Romans as mercenaries from Crete. They look different from other Cretan Archers--more Roman/Italian--reasoning that they would wear more "Roman" attire while under their service.

  5. Hey everyone, Several years ago I was considering creating a sci-fi RTS here in 0AD. Due to my other project taking up too much time, I sort of set it off to the side. After getting fed up with the Medieval 2 engine I'm considering porting that big project, Hyrule Total War to 0 A.D. now. I've started some preliminary work, porting a few of the static buildings over from Medieval 2 into 0AD: I just have a few questions before I make the decision: I thank anyone for their replies, and I hope I can come back to 0AD soon.

  6. Why ? What is there to say: I like to look at something different once in a while. Installation note: No guarantee that it will be compatible to any other mod, but if you want to try it, it's probably best to enable this one last (after) everything else. Current version: 0.27.3 (testing/ A27 / SVN) | 0.26.3 (A26) Where to find it: For A27/ SVN: newest testing version https://api.mod.io/v1/games/5/mods/1965214/files/3658747/download (needs manual installation) For A26: It is available through the in-game mod downloader or manually from: https://mod.io/g/0ad/m/shiny Some features: In case you don't like the new backgrounds: There is now the option to enable or disable it and switch between the new and the old backgrounds. Just go to the options and click on "Disable new background" _________________________________________________________ Credits to: @Langbart who gave me the idea and with whom I discussed much about the initial design/ who generally helped, @wowgetoffyourcellphone @Stan` @Radiotraining for tips on the design and a general thanks to everybody who gave their opinions and suggestions in this thread.

  7. I've been meaning to ask this question for a while now. As we all know 0AD is its own standalone game, with its default factions and setting that takes place in the medieval age. Beyond that it's also a great RTS engine in general. In the mod selection page of the main menu I can see that "0 A.D. Empires Ascendant" (default game) gives you the option to disable it, presumably in favor of running alternative core games instead. So I wanted to know: Are there any other base games built on the engine? By game I primarily mean to custom factions, presuming any will work with existing maps and biomes granted resources are the same. The ones I'm curious about in particular are those in different genres from the default, meaning either fantasy or futuristic. As far as fantasy games go: I strongly see 0AD being a fantastic engine for something like Warcraft 3... used to play that as a child and loved the magical atmosphere and different races and factions you could play as. Glest / Megaglest covered this in the FOSS world for some time, its ancient engine is slowly dying and 0AD kinda seems like its replacement. For the scope of my question anything with magic and wizards counts... also other races like orcs or dragons, I'm also wondering if unit assets for these were ever made; Only one I know of is Ponies Ascendant which as a MLP fan I installed and am eager to try out once I find some time for that. As far as sfici games are concerned, I see this being a great replacement to another fellow FOSS project of 0AD: Spring RTS engine has a few futuristic RTS games available, I wanted to try them out at one point but for some reason its loader always messed up and none of the game packages worked... I prefer 0AD and its architecture anyway and would welcome an alternative here instead. So do we have any factions with computers and holograms and droids and rovers yet?

  8. Hey guys, since release of alpha 24 in februrary I've worked on some special map as my old alpha 23 map has been deleted by installing alpha 24 - don't know how and why. This new map, The Legend of Avilava, shall be it's replacement. I've tried to make this something unique - featuring huge mountains and dense forrests, including marshes and tiny pahts to walk on troughout the map. Furhtermore, I tried to depict the landscape with lots on beauty and small details. I've also included some bridges and quarries to enhance not only the look, regarding the latter to give some players a satisfying amount of resources at their starting position - so that they do not need to build new headquaters in new areas. The Legend of Avilava generally is based on the the area of eastern france and western germany, splitted by the river Rhine that floats into the English Channel. Behind it the Brits are stationed. However, it is important to note that this map does not aim at depicting geographical accuracy and rather tries to tell some sort of "mystery" about this area and how it could look like based on the imagination of people that were told how central (well, not that central, but you get what I mean) europe does looked like back in 0a.d.. Generally there are 8 players in the map: Roman (1): Southeast - starting as the player withouth teammates and thus has already a bigger city and lots of resources at the beginning Gauls (3): Southwest - stationed on the highest mountain; well defendable but may lack of resources Brits (4): Northwest to Northeast - being split into small villages throughout the foresty mountain they firstly need to find space to build and to grow crops on; player 7 & player 8 start with one dock and a merchant ship each To be honest I have to state that matchmaking was not my first thought while starting to build. I might see some advantage of the Brits since they're able to grow rapidly respectively exponential if they achieve to deforst large areas. Also the Romans may be a bit OP as they start with approximately 60 women, an already existing city and lots of resources - not even mentioning their fortresses, bolt and catapult tower systems. Nevertheless, for me running simulations with bots had been downright entertaining. Maybe it's just me, but I somehow find Romans fighting against barbarian tribes amusing. ;D For me it's not about winning or loosing - it's about enjoying the beauty of 0ad (especially regarding its graphics and battles!) :))) But I think I might show you some screenshots of it. The map on its whole: The "gallic" mountain / island: The "roman" mountain / island: The "british" mountain / island: To also give a view of the type of landscape we're facing here: Lastly i want to show the starting positions of each player, starting with the Romans, afterwards the Gauls followed by the Brits (the seventh player does have two beginning headquarters): I hope you can open these files: Until now, thank you guys for reading my post until this point. Feel free to download and play as long as you want to. If there are some complications or any issues I do my best to fix them - as the name of the files say - it's the seventeenth edition. Edit: As time goes by I will fix little issues and load up new editions of the map. 9. Uhmm a bit better thanks for trying that out! Okay, if you want a real feedback : the shape is okay, but it's still a bit too big and cumbersome in my opinion. Before it had the advantage to look more sleek and minimal with the rest. Now it really gets all the attention! i'd say that a good compromise could be a mix of both : making it look more subtle as before (smaller proportions) but i also think this rectangular shape fits better! try also with a simple rectangular without those wings. It shouldn't be "noticed", a simple shape could work just fine. It may be worth to try and see, maybe with wings can be still better though! ehehe sorry for being annoying you asked for it!! ahaha i'm kidding: do what you can. The rest is still amazing!

  11. Oh gods, Hyrule Conquest looks very impressive! I'll happily give that a try for sure. The latest trailer indicates they've gotten far with it at this point. The name Hyrule indicates it's a Zelda fan-mod though. I don't mind of course, just hope I won't have to see another good project go down over Nintendo-style Copyright trolling. It can probably be renamed in a worst case scenario, unless the units are also of IP characters in which case it may be complicated. I wonder how much of Stella Artis is playable at this point, seems to be a concept with some assets so far. Will definitely follow their thread too. Only other one I'm seeing is Byzen. It seems to be almost the same theme as vanilla 0AD though so I'll pass for now.

  12. Hey! You're coming at the right place! For Fantasy games I know Hyrule Conquest, developed from pyrogenesis engine: I haven't played it yet and I'm not updated on the state of progress.. but seems already pretty advanced from the previews! About sci-fi: hey! it's a great question because we were exactly trying to think about something like that here : It's a very early stage, but it would be cool if you want to participate with ideas and contributions, especially if you like the genre and have knowledge of it. I also like a lot Spring and I would really love to see something like that ported on 0ad! I think there's still a lot of untapped potential!! But, as everything, it will require quite some work and participation to make it happen. I'm currently trying to work on possible concept art, so I would be very curious and interested to get fresh ideas and inspirations

  15. Ah, so that's how people seem to be both in the lobby and in a game at the same time. I'll start using that.

  16. in the pre-game page there is a little icon of a chat baloon, on the right under the map picture, that allows you to see the lobby without closing the game, from there you can see those stats. sometimes I host a 1v1, and a lot of noobs join, one after the other, and I have to explain to each of them that I don't want to play a boring unbalanced game, if one could set a filter like the one seeh suggested, I would use it.

  17. I like the idea of trying to equalize games a bit, but players are already able to decline to join games with players that have a much higher rating than them. If we're talking about one simple fix that would help equalize games, I'd recommend this: allowing us to view the W-L record (and not just the rating) of other players who are in the game before it starts. As things stand now, you can see this information in the lobby. But I don't think you can see it after someone joins a game you're hosting (or I just haven't figured out how to see it). That would allow players to make better decisions as to whether or not to begin a game. For example, let's say I host a game. My current rating, by the way, is 1121, and I've played about 35 rated games. If a 1250 rated player joins my game, all I see is that they're 1250. I don't know if they've played 10 games, and won 6 or 7 of them. Or if they've played 500 games and won 270. I wouldn't have any problems playing against a 1250 player who's only played 10 games. That's probably a fair match. But the game against the 1250 player who's played 500 games would probably be less balanced.

  20. They used something called "Deben", which is a weight unit used for anything from gold, silver and copper, to grains. Basically, specific weights of gold, silver, copper, grains and probably a bunch of other stuff had specific values. So they didn't need coin. And in a time when people had more time, barter isn't so bad anyway. It "democratizes" trade. Also, Kush just wasn't a monetary society but a theocratic one where loyal subjects would be "paid" in housing, rations and luxury goods, and tributes were levied on items like cattle, grain, gold and ivory. In the Stele of Nastasen, an in-game Hero, we actually find mention of their use of the Deben as a measure for gold, even long after the 25th Dynasty. Excerpt from the "Stela of Nastasen from Year 8. Second half of the 4th cent. BC. Berlin Agyptisches Museum 2268. Urk. III.2, 137-152" "I had many levies go against the rebel country of Mayokue. It resisted me, the rebel country, at the Sycomore-of-Sarsare I caused fighting with it. I caused a great slaughter. I had its chief, Tamakheyta, seized. I caused to be plundered all their women, all the domestic animals, gold: 2000 deben-weight, long-horned oxen: 35,330 (head), livestock: 55,526 all that by which people are sustained." Anyway, random addition to the post: Some really nice Nubian music from Egyptian Nubians in Aswan, just north of the border with Lower Nubia. This would have also been the northern border of the Kushite state for much of 0AD's timeframe. A place where the lines between Kushite, Lower Nubian and Egyptian become so blurred it's difficult to tell them apart.

  21. The Stalfos The word Stalfos has its etymology in the ancient Akkalan language, and refers to bones of once living creatures. In modern times the term is applied loosly to almost any undead abomination and monstrosity. As a political entity, the identity of the Stalfos has changed just as dramatically as all the kingdoms that have risen and fallen across the history of Hyrule: due in part to the undead being the servants of many fighting lords and necromatic powers. HISTORY The origins of the rituals and practice of animated skeletons is lost to time. Many Hylian scholars agree that necromancy had its origins west of the Gerudo desert at a time when dragons still ravaged the land. In the ancient lore of the Gerudo and Akkalans, necromancy was common practice during the Ancient Age in the far west of Hyrule. The Kingdom of Ikana and Cobble Kingdoms were famously destroyed during the height of their necromancy practices. Many cults to the forgotten god Mudora practiced necromancy rituals deep in the Gerudo Desert. After King Nohans' conquest of Hyrule, the Ancient Akkalans enforced a complete ban on all forms of necromancy and thus the practice faded for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Petty necromancers and Gerudo Kings have occasionally tried to revive the practice over the centuries, with little luck. In modern times there have been stories of Stalfos appearing in larger numbers than was usual. Whispers of necromantic powers returning the Hyrule are not uncommon. Indeed, there are forces at work that wish to revive the long forgotten arts of cheating death. NECROMANCERS Without a master, most undead simply wander without any clear objective. Shambling Stalfos and ReDead zombies can be found aimless in the darkest corners of Hyrule, remnants of a long gone necromantic age. Should these horrors ever fall under the power of a necromancer or mage with enough skill, they could be used to wreck untold havoc on the world as a fearless horde of soldiers that feel no pain and no remorse. PLAYSTYLE The Stalfos have a very distinct gameplay structure that deviates from many other factions. The Stalfos are not creative by nature, and cannot construct new buildings or train new units. Rather they can only transform dead material into what they currently need. In terms of structures, the Stalfos must capture pre-existing ruins on a map and by ritual transform them into the buildings they need. Should there be too few ruins for their purposes, the Stalfos can expend many Rupees to unearth a new set of ruins at a target location. Once these ruins have been dug up to the surface of Hyrule they can convert them into the structures that they require. As for Stalfos units, they accomplish expanding their army by collecting the corpses of their victims and converting them into the forms they need for battle. This is represented by the "Bone" resource, which replaces food. Bones can be harvested from any dead organic creature, as well as graves found on some maps. If a Stalfos player has a unit that can directly raise the dead, they can instead instantly turn corpses into new units. For more details on the Stalfos Heroes and their unit roster, check out the spoiler below: HEROES

  22. your rating only decreases if you lose. I really don't agree with this idea. You already have the choice to not play with someone who is higher rating. Moreover, 100 rating is not really enough to justify rejecting them. I think if you are worried about a player with 100 rating higher then you're not really even trying to play rated. You might as well play unrated if you're not willing to play another player who is + or - 100 rating to your rating. If you only want to play players who are near your rating then why bother playing rated games at all, that's not really the point of the ladder/ratings. my suggestion would be to play unrated.
