===[TASK]=== (early) German Shield Patterns

Recommended Posts

Calling all 2D artists ( @wackyserious, @Lion.Kanzen et al.)! We are looking for more German shield textures, for a special project@real_tabasco_sauce and I are working on for the game!

Reference Era: Cimbrian War to Teutoburg Forest, so 2nd c. BC - 1st c. AD. Need to EXCLUDE references from later periods, such as the Goths/Great Migration Period/Late Roman Empire. These are the "barbarian" versions of the Germans, prior to Romanization.

We will reuse the Gauls/Britons/Celts shield models, so we only need the front design textures, unless we find references to uniquely "German" shield shapes.

I think basic shields would be simple bare wood or plain white, then advanced would have player color and maybe some simpler patterns, and then elite/champion would have the more intricate patterns.

Some examples

Sounds good to me in general, but I think I'd give player color also to basic shields. It would consistently be easier to visually identify the units and I don't think player color is something they have to earn.

So, no representations of animals, but mostly geometric and celestial? I'm thinking generally here

Animal representations were extremely rare at this time on the material that survived. And when it is the case, the depiction and the style are simplistic. The earliest form of emblematic native art appeared with the bracteates, during the Roman Empire.

Could be mostly unpainted but with small player color designs.

Or just painted in solid player color (With no patterns)

I think most shields for citizen units could have the wooden spina instead of a metal  boss.

Elite would get metal bosses (The simple round one or the one who is just a metal reinforcement on the wooden spina)

Champions would get metal bosses (Simple round one and pointy round one) and have metal rims on shields

Some posts from earlier threads; could be useful for Suebian shields (Gives an idea what patterns they used).

So for the little story, this is a petroglyph from Bornholm, Denmark Sweden. Dated from around 1500 BC, in the Nordic Bronze Age.

It represents clearly both a solar wheel and a time wheel (like a watch). The symbol is appearing again but slightly modified during the Early Jastorf period (600/400 BC):

It is a symbol associated with the Norsemen and Anglo-Saxons, from the early medieval era. The *Valknútr/Valknut is very controversial because there is a lot of modern folklore around it, most of its interpretation is based on myths. The exact signification and importance of this symbol for the Norsemen is the not known.

For the Elbe Germans, a common recurring symbol is this is one:
