Input lags depends on a lot of factors. Keyboard connection distance internet provider length of the cable type (copper) and mostly computer running it. Ie 8players games of aoe3 are as laggy as 0ad

You can do lan by using local ips ie 192.168.0.3. Νο ports needs to be open for that. You can do that by ethernet wifi by ethernet between two computer and wifi between two computers.
