=[TASK]= Roman Cataphract Horse Armor (2nd Century)

Working on some Roman Cataphracts, based on 2nd or early 3rd century examples.

Right now they use Seleucid cataphract armor, but what they really need is a whole new horse armor set, like this mount here (full set):

(rider's helmet would be a bonus)

 

And/or this half-set here:

There isn't currently a set of horse armor in the game that looks like this that covers the neck as well as the chest. Also, the awesome chamfron for the horse's face would be a separate piece. Currently, the only chamfron in the game is the Seleucid cavalry chamfron ith a transverse crest which is clearly not Roman.

These are a champion unit for the Imperial Romans.

I've often wondered why the Roman armor protected the lower legs and forearms, but left the thighs and upper arms exposed? You must know that there are quite a lot of large arteries in the thigh. When the Chinese make armor, they always give priority to protecting the upper arm/shoulder and thigh, while the forearm and calf protectors are dispensable.

it doesn't pierce, it hurts bones more than arteries. i didn't know han soldiers had this kind of armor though.

The Chinese use both Ji and shields, in fact, the Han people use more "Pi", which is similar to attaching a short sword to a long pole.

But what about the javelin?

The armor of the Han people is like this, it will not protect the legs.

Later in the Three Kingdoms period, there were armor skirts to protect the thighs.

I don't suppose javelins would trigger different considerations than arrows about shin guards.

In fact, the javelin is more common than the sling, and if the cavalry sees the lower body as the part that needs protection, then they don't leave the thigh exposed, the javelin can easily pierce the aorta.
I think the problem is that the restorers still haven't figured out what kind of armor the Romans used to protect their thighs, not that the Romans really didn't protect them.

yeah that kind of equipment wpuld definitely make more sense for foot soldiers.

anyway, I still can't figure why swing polearms were employed so early in china. the more I think about it, the less it makes sense to me.

Ji evolved from the Ge, Ge is similar to a battle axe.
Ji can be used to attack an enemy hiding behind a shield, to attack an enemy's head or to pull the shield away. It can also be used to hook the enemy, which is still necessary in cavalry combat.

I know that, but a footman hooking the shield of a swordsman is basically exposing himself. once the swordsman gets past the axemen's guard, he has the upper hand.

in cavalry combat, it makes a lot of sense to use polearms and that was also the case in medioeval europe, but for bigger, dismounted armies, it's weird to me.

Soldiers using the shorter Ji or Ge carry shields to protect themselves, just like soldiers using tomahawks. If he doesn't have a shield, he uses the length of the pole and the strength of the two-handed grip to overwhelm his opponent.
We have tested this weapon in cold weapon fighting competitions, the player who uses Ji can easily defeat the opponent swordsman, and he will not lose until he encounters the opponent who uses pike.

I have seen this video. Ge was in use before the advent of chariots, though. During the Shang Dynasty, soldiers would hold a leather-covered shield in their left hand and use Ge in their right hand.
