Audio Design 5 - Voice List

Recommended Posts

Choosing one language for each civ means making a choice between a variety of languages inside that one civ (like the Celts for example who had around 4 main ones) but I guess we can find manage that somehow. Having one set of voices per civ will really improve the gamer immersion in each culture and I can't wait to hear that in-game.

By the way, what language 0 A.D. units are speaking for now ?

Personally I would be glad to contribute with my voice. I've got a deep voice (like Mark Knopfler's ;) ). I have free time to record it, though my microphone quality may not really fit...

According to the Audio Voice List, we don't yet have words translated for Celts and Iberians for instance. Is there someone specialist on that who could have time now to seach that ?

I can give my voice and I can record, but I don't have the skills to find the exact words I'd have to tell.

Cool if we can find a way to produce something good. :)

If folks want to pursue recording other languages, we first need help from language experts to submit and verify translated phrases for each of the factions.

The only translations we're satisfied with currently are Ancient Greek - those were written and reviewed by a number of individuals with knowledge of Ancient Greek. Since nobody on the team is a language expert, we are relying on the online community to help out with this.

The phrases can be viewed here:

http://trac.wildfire...udio_Voice_List

If someone has knowledge of ancient Carthaginian, Celt, Iberian, Persian, Roman, or Mauryan languages you can help us by translating our phrases in this format:

What is it? — τί εστι; — tí esti? — [tí esti]

My lord? — δέσποτά μου — déspotá mou — [déspotá muː]

I will walk — βήσομαι — bḗsomai — [běːsomai̯]

I will go out against — ἀντέξειμι — antékseimi — [antéksiːmi]

I will build — τεύξω — teúksō — [teǔ̯ksoː]

I will work land — γεωργήσω — geōrgḗsō — [geoːrgěːsoː]

I will gather together — συλλέξομαι — sylléksomai — [sylːéksomai̯]

I will herd — νέμω — némō — [némoː]

I will fish — ἁλιεύσω — halieúsō — [halieǔ̯soː]

I will attack! — eisbàlomen

I will repair — siachno

I will hunt — kynegetèo

I will heal — iàomai

I will march! — porèuomai

I will retreat! — hypochorèsis

Battle cry — alalài, alalalài!

I will garrison — parafulakh

Thank you Pureon for this clear briefing. Precisely the infos I needed.

I haven't much time these days for 0 A.D., but I keep that task in mind, and surely around january or just later, I will give time to this interesting aspect of the game. It's mostly a research for language-skilled people, a network work, which is my area.

Has anybody done anything to contribute to sounds yet? Sound too plays an important part in making the game fun and memorable. I need ear candy.

What type of sounds are you referring to?

See this post for details on what is needed if we are to pursue unique language voices for each civ. We don't see this as a high-priority task given the huge amount of work involved in completing it, so it's unlikely it'll make it into the RC of part 1.

I can not find other threads for sound, so I replied to this one. I mean sounds in general, like we are still missing sound for the siege engines.

Can you be a bit more specific? We have movement, attack, selection, order, and trained sound effects for most siege weapons AFAIK. If you're refering to the movement sound not looping, this is something stwf is looking into (we have looping sounds for siege movement, they just aren't implemented).

Wait, you do have attacking sounds for siege engines?

Stick a siege ram beside an enemy building and you'll hear the walls crumble :)

What you won't hear are long-range projectile collision sounds, although once again we have these ready just don't have a way of implementing them yet (unless something's changed recently)

I might be able to help with translations. I can track down some Punic language resources and try to translate the basic sayings... I think it would be more realistic than just using Hebrew or Arabic. Another option might be to find a native Berber speaker and use that... It's pretty different from Punic, linguistically speaking, but was spoken in the same region as Punic Phoenician. Here's some Phoenician (the direct linguistic predecessor to Punic):

anek aqtal: I am killing/ I will kill

adony/meleky?: my lord?

a7aresh: I am tilling/ I am farming/ I will farm (the 7 is the arabic letter Haa (in between jim and khaa; it's pronounced like you are blowing on glass to fog it up. There's no Hebrew equivalent sorry :( )

Hi all,

I'd like to sum up here what speakable languages we can use for each civilization of the game.

First, I recommend the Wikipedia List of languages by first written accounts.

Mauryan Indians :

According to this page : "What Ashoka left behind was the first written language in India since the ancient city of Harappa. Rather than Sanskrit, the language used for inscription was the current spoken form called Prakrit."

If I understood well, Sanskrit was a more noble language, not much spoken by the crowd.

On the Oxford classes page, more info on Prakrit : "The term 'Prakrit' is commonly translated as 'natural' and refers to a variety of languages and dialects originally used in India. Most of the modern Indian languages have their roots in Prakrit languages, and the classic Sanskrit language also has its roots in old prakrit language spoken in North-India in Vedic & Prevedic period."

That said, according to the history brief on the Indo-Aryan laguages Wikipedia page here Sankrit could also fit pretty well, it seems. Wikipedia page on Sanskrit.

-So, for the Mauryans, we have the choice between Prakrit and Sanskrit.

Celts :

Excerpts from this page :

"The Celtic family of languages is divided into two branches, the Insular Celtic languages, and the Continental Celtic languages. The Continental branch includes the languages Gaulish, Celtiberian, and Lepontic. These were languages spoken on the European continent."

"The Celtic Insular languages are mostly those spoken on the islands, typically Britain, Ireland, Man and part of France. The Insular languages are divided into two branches, the Goidelic and the Brythonic."

The most widely used languages seem to be Gaulish (but apparently not known in the spoken form) and Brythonic (known in spoken form).

According to the Wikipedia page on Gaulish : "Gaulish has a very close relationship to Insular Celtic (Goidelic and Brythonic), and many forms are identical in the two.

A famous (and still spoken) Celt language is Gaelic (more precisely "Goidelic"), but it fits only for a very small part of the Celt area (Ireland + a bit of Scotland). Brythonic sticks better to the rest of Europe, to say shortly! :)

The thing now is that Brythonic is subdivided in various dialects. Maybe the most accessible today is Welsh... For instance, here we have a "hear and speak" Welsh page.

-So for the Celts, we could use Welsh.

Carthaginians :

From the Wikipedia page for Phoenician language : "Phoenician was a language originally spoken in the coastal (Mediterranean) region then called "Canaan" "

"Phoenician is a Semitic language of the Canaanite subgroup; its closest living relative is Hebrew, to which it is very similar."

"The significantly divergent later-form of the language that was spoken in the Tyrian Phoenician colony of Carthage is known as Punic; it remained in use there for considerably longer than Phoenician did in Phoenicia itself, arguably surviving into Augustine's time."

Apparently, no knowledge on the prounciation of Punic. So, I guess we should choose the closest main language, which is Hebrew.

-Then for the Carthaginans, we should use Hebrew.

Persians :

Persian language page on Wikipedia

The Persian language era that fits most is the Middle Persian (300BC-800AD) but it may be too old to know how to speak it. The New Persian, precisely the Western Persian (or "Farsi") seems to fit. We can learn Farsi with Neda (from Iran) ! :)

-So for Persians the language can be Farsi

Iberians :

Here's the Wikipedia page for the Iberian language where we learn that the present Basque language is considered by some as close to the Iberian one, "but they have not been clearly demonstrated to the satisfaction of modern scholarship."

We also learn that : "The Iberian language, like all the other Paleohispanic languages except Basque, became extinct by the 1st to 2nd centuries AD, after being gradually replaced by Latin."

In lack of data, Greek (already used in the game) could stay for the Iberian, but maybe we could try Basque (it is currently spoken in the south-west of France).

-For Iberians, let's try Basque

-For Romans, of course Latin !

So, basically :

-Mauryans : Sanskrit or Prakrit

-Celts : Welsh

-Carthaginians : Hebrew

-Persians : Farsi

-Iberians : Basque

-Romans : Latin

Lion's been doing some research on Basque, but as far as i know, it is being very hard to find any spoken examples for it. Even the Google Translator has a Basque translation, but it lacks the spoken component. If we are to use it, we'll need some further research (maybe someone could go there?).

we nee find some basque, people, or basque forum. to ask.

You might want to search for "Euskara" instead, which is Basque for Basque. If you don't mind, I'll place a call on the wikipedia talk pages (the English page about Basque and the Basque page about it) that 0AD can use a some Basques with good audio recording tools and an clear, expressive voice.

I'll point them to here.

We would need someone with good linguistic knowledge first and foremost :) There's no point in having recordings done if they are later found to be incorrect. Remember that it would be a lot of work overall if we were to use Basque as we would need to have Basque names for all buildings/units as well.

(Personally I would have preferred if we had went for English voices for all units as it's almost impossible to get good results in all different languages, but ah well :) )

IMO, please don't. That's not really an appropriate way to use Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:What_Wikipedia_is_not#Wikipedia_is_not_a_soapbox_or_means_of_promotion

It's not 0 AD that posted it, it's me, and I clearly stated I'm not affiliated to you. So if the Wikipedia users still think it's no good, they can block me, but 0 AD has nothing to do with it.

And it's for a CC-BY-SA project. So they should understand it.

Really? :P So I can go and promote my favorite political party, and when they stop me after I have recruited 10000 voters, I just say "oh, I'm not affiliated with the party", even though the damage is already done. Seems really clever.

It's clearly not sustainable, and IMO reflects poorly on 0 A.D. regardless of how it's attributed. Also the policy express forbids: "advocacy, propaganda, or recruitment of any kind: commercial, political, religious, national, sports-related, or otherwise", so it's not really a question of what license is used.

Yes, you can promote your political party, if you don't mind to be blocked. Your favourite political party can't be punished for your actions.

Btw, it's already deleted in the English Wikipedia. Some administrator didn't agree. Not because I was promoting or recruiting, but because I wasn't discussing the content of the article. Anyway, I hope the Basque are more friendly than the English speaking.
