Been thinking about how regional mercenaries could be implemented.

My idea is that you would train them from great hall UB;  first you choose a non-suebian region to ally with, each region provides two mercenaries:

Scandinavia: Suiones archer and Cimbrian mailed Swordsman

Rhine:   Chatti veteran  and horse stabber

North Sea: Cherusci pikeman and Batavian horseman (Mounted slingers are interesting never heard of that before, what is the source ? )

Pomerania: Luggiones swordsman and night ambusher

Baltic coast: Ruggi warrior with round shield,  Aesti axe warrior (Later could be either all female boosting nearby units, or a normal axe unit with both males and females)

I am suggesting a possible roster with tribal names and my ideas on shields will post in a while.

Edit: Here is my suggestion (Tribe name translations are speculative and not very good),

Citizen Infantry:

  Reveal hidden contents

Citizen Cavalry

  Reveal hidden contents

Champions

  Reveal hidden contents

Suebian workshop

Nice, captures the workshop feel while still looking suitably primitive.

Not sure if they will use wheeled rams, since the DE scythians don't.

Possible name for ram could be Gataslahanaz (Gate smasher).

I may still give them a "Covered Ram" upgrade in the Imperial Phase for balance. If the Covered Ram looks suitably primitive, it can still be justified from a visual standpoint.

Possibly like the Millenium A.D rams (Covered in shields).

German ram could be covered in shields as i said.

Scythians did not use much shields, so their ram could have a wood frame covered in leather (Like they use for their tents and covered wagons).

Been thinking about civilian units.

For merchants i suggest a horse or maybe ox cart (Not much use of donkeys by germans).

Priest could either be a priestess,  or a bearded man with a horned headress.

The phrygian-esque hat of the tollund man could be used, either for merchants (Since a lot of the ingame merchants use some kind of hat) or even priest (Odin's pointy hat ?)

I find the practice of bog burials interesting,  they very likely knew of it's preserving properties since they also stored butter in bogs and it takes a specific kind of bog for the process to happen.

Wonder why he was wearing just a hat; maybe some costume for sacrifice or execution (The first one seems more likely, considering how they closed his eyes and put him in sleeping position) possibly indicating a spiritual significance of the cap.

Could also be like that for navies; unlock Nydam ship in empire phase, if only having the Hjortspring ship is too unbalanced.

If my idea for regional mercenaries is implemented, you could have so the North Sea region unlocks a naval mercenary (Roman Patrol boat stolen by Batavian rebels).

I have a suggestion for the Goths faction, @wowgetoffyourcellphone being a nomadic faction we could make it a militar colony like the one that the Seleucids and Ptolemies have.

Expand

Military colony is a very hellenistic thing but it would be possible to have a similar building with different name.

Maybe do like my above suggestion for Suebians, and have great hall UB where they can choose some regional mercs (Saxons, Franks, Vandals, Steppe raiders, romanized foederati etc.) perhaps train heros as well.

One thing to settle is how the Ostrogoth/Visigoth divide is implemented (At the start like Hyrule Conquest ? two different techs for reaching the next phase ?).

Looks great, the shingle roof on the old version was a bit vikingish and not very fitting for Suebians.

Just what i was thinking. I suggest it because at that time the goths did not build cities, they builds camps or something similar to settlements.

Yes, although they did form kingdoms later on  from existing roman cities (Perhaps stone wall in phase IV like Sparta ?).

On heroes maybe Alaric, Fritigern and Theodoric I, for Visigoths;while Ostrogoths get Ardaric, Odoacer, and Theodoric the Great.

Ostrogoth wonder could be Theodoric's Mausoleum,  for Visigoths i can't find much (Maybe Reccopolis Basilica ?).

There is also evidence in Tacitus account for pastoralist nomadism in their societies.

Expand

Goths could have the no- territory nomadic gameplay.

Suebians could have weak buildings and ox carts like nomads but  still have territory (Early germanics did not migrate as far, Tacitus says tribes where proud of how much empty land surrounded their settlements.) .
