Yekaterina's duplicate accounts - Guide for recognizing them
Seleucids replied to Norse_Harold's topic in General Discussion
No they are not. Norse Harold has no evidence, only intuition and assumptions, but he claims he knows everything. He cannot produce a single log extract or screenshot to prove any transgressions from these people or their link to me. It's time to stop fuelling this troll thread. The author has not replied to the topic. He was not active in the lobby while I am there, so I don't know what inspired him to come up with this topic. -

Firstly, Geriatrix is French and I am Brit. You can verify this by IP, language etc Secondly, the UK has ~65 million population. That is more than enough for a few 0ad players emerge. I and Shyft are not from the same city, and again you can verify that by IP. There are replays where we did an op teamwork to beat Geri on the flank (so all 3 appeared in one game) and another one where I played against him and knight. I find it insulting to be equated to that guy, even though his behaviour has improved. You wouldn't be happy if I claimed that you are a smurf of Jagsus and 0AD_BOSS and Groot just because you are all from India. -
@Atrik, experimenting in many games, I find that changing the attack types in unit_actions.js does not automatically achieve sniping effect. The edit will allow you to kill off the most threatening units first, then the support unit. It also makes you less susceptible to people dancing with rams. However, you still have to do clicking repetitively if you want to snipe. This is not a workaround. If you want to automate that, maybe we should look elsewhere. If you set attack type to only ranged, after the death of the first target, your army descends into the general attack command and that hurts you more because your formation breaks. You can try to select all ranged units then queue up attack-ranged, but that just means spam pressing the keyboard 100 times, not sure if that is an improvement. You'd also have to press 3 keys down simultaneously: shift + ctrl + Q

Furthmore, Norse Harold, you created this thread not for improving 0ad, but to target me personally. You have named AInur, so we can all look at that user's posts: it's mostly programming and technical discussion, with a few suggestions on changing gameplay. There is no sign of malice. You have a record of driving helpful users away: I still remember NitroVicky and Inzhu. No matter whether Vicky is actually me or not, they were helping 0ad with developing a superior AI. If you didn't ban her from the forum, all of the single-players could be enjoying a more advanced AI right now. Same for Inzhu. They claimed they can implement parallel processing to 0ad. If you had encouraged him on that instead of stalking him around in the lobby delisting games, we could have said farewell to CPU lag since long time. All 3 of the users are positively contributing to the 0ad community, and all you can do is ban them based on your subjective suspicions. Now I ask: How have you improved the AI? How far did you nudge the engine towards multiprocessing? How many bugs have you found workarounds for? who is the real threat to the community that's constantly pushing players and contributors away? You created this thread to drive me away once again and prevent me from contributing. For what? What are you trying to defend, and against what? You can survey the lobby userbase's opinion towards Ricci-Curvature and you will see. Meanwhile, Shyft has also returned. He is a reasonable person now and I could get along with him, despite the occasional inappropriate language from him. You have made no effort to hunt him down, you only target me. I do not oppose the other lobby users challenging me, nor am I manipulating anyone into anything. I just play a few TGs and test out the historical patch with Leif. Simple life. When you were moderator, you had the absolute power to delete people's posts so that nobody could speak against you. You blamed many things on me and I was denied the right to speech. Now you have lost that power and it's time for you to be held accountable for your transgressions. However, as I said, the past is past and I don't want more mess. Let's put the history aside and seek for coexistence in the community. That's my proposal. If you decide to still take on unreasonable measures such as harassing manhunts, IP monitors, enslaving restitution, unjustified sanctions and bye-laws, etc against me, then I will simply leave. P.S. your topic ruined my weekend, thanks for that. -

I think this topic has attracted enough unnecessary attention and should be locked. The nature of the topic has already violated the TOS by inciting public harassment towards an user and spreading false accusations with the intent of defame. Not all of Norse Harold's claims about me have been verified, especially regarding the YouTube part where it is off-WFG and someone has already admitted to owning the 0ad expert channel. I quote Norse Harold himself: """ your post contains numerous possibly inaccurate claims, possibly defamatory statements (claims without evidence), and statements that incite the player base to harass a user. Please read the forum terms of use here. And, you left out some important information. """ Source: https://wildfiregames.com/forum/topic/119412-boycott-declaration-against-sanafur-in-0-ad/?do=findComment&comment=577093 The nature of this topic suits his own description perfectly. Everything (or mostly) was calm until you started this drama. I don't want drama, but I also don't want to be insulted or have trolls / spammers ruining my games. I just wanted to play and enjoy a few games with my new and old friends. I'm not planning to nor willing to do any kind of attacks or be toxic ( and I haven't). The entire lobby has been watching me closely in the past month of my active time. I've had 0 arguments, not even directly with Geri. If anything, I have diffused a few quarrels before they got serious. Yet Norse and Geri still won't leave me alone. So who is the problem here? -

No! I'm not going to distribute questionable features, as it won't be welcomed. Atrik, you are the one who first proposed changes to unit_actions.js, I think the auto snipe topic has explained quite clearly how to edit the file, so no need for such a "cheat mod" @ffm2 I don't know what is walk custom, but I remember that game very well. I and aslaug did an early p3 push on ijavadev and there was huge lag (for me). The likely cause is dancing. At the end of the game I came under archer fire so I danced my pikeman to buy slingers time to chase up to archers. -

I do want to help out. However, clearly nobody can reach consensus on how to fix things. Take the very simple example: what should we do about champion cavs? What about broken civs? I am not interested in lobby spam or smurfing. I have been sticking to this Ricci-Curvature alone in the lobby. The only exception is Qadam, but I already apologised to Dunedan about having to use it to avoid Geriatrx attacks, and he has banned it. I think Norse is bringing up old things. Furthermore, it is not against forum rules to use multiple forum accounts. The old account Yekaterina is banned and I cannot use it to post anything, so I just register a new one. -

Seleucids replied to Norse_Harold's topic in General Discussion
Hold up, Since I have made no attempt to disguise my identity both in the lobby and the forum, why does this topic exist? Those of you who have played with Ricci-Curvature, you have seen me proudly announcing myself. I think this is universal to all players who have interacted with me in the lobby. I have even told Dunedan my list of accounts that I made in the past just so that he can guarantee that they are banned. Therefore this topic's very existence might be an attempt to smear me again, but also to instigate a sense of insecurity amongst the current players. The author of the topic is rarely active in the lobby (I don't recall seeing him active since I returned). But he is trying to create much fear and an imaginary enemy from nothing. Why? -

Seleucids replied to Norse_Harold's topic in General Discussion
That's right. When I attack, I always use ctrl + Q. This only attacks units and not buildings. To make it more efficient, I changed the attack classes to {"Ranged", "Cavalry", "Infantry"} This change prevents the attack move from attacking women or siege. However, it does not last long; as soon as the first targets die, the unit actions return to normal attack. It's does not make visible change in large scale battles on empty ground. Good question, I don't know neither. It's been too long. Evidently this is something carried forward from many years ago. As ffm correctly pointed out, I declared immediately who I am and stated my rating accurately. I made no attempt to hide. I even busted imposters who try to pretend to be me for whatever reason. Some of the accusations from Norse Harold are invalid and unbased; no evidence has ever been presented to anyone. He claims that he has sufficient proof but he fails to show anything against me. Not a single IP correlation. Not a single access log. Regarding the cheat video on YouTube, if I was the owner of that channel, why would I allow Getriatrix and other trolls to use it against me? I would have taken it down since a long time ago! Even Norse Harold threatened me to take them down. I deleted Helicity, I deleted Kate0AD, but the ownership of that 0ad expert is not in my hands! I cannot do anything! -

In the past year, I played some BeyondAllReason where I saw some features that 0ad can really benefit from. That's why I actively created many new forum topics suggesting the implementation of these features and tried to push forward the historical-rebalance mod because I see that as a revolutionary fix to many of 0ad's fatal flaws. Those players who stick to 0ad all the time may not be able to step back and see the grand picture of source of problems and their appropriate solutions. I also studied the engine source code extensively to look for possible solutions to multiprocessing and performance optimisations. 0ad will be able to say farewell to lagging if we could take advantage of all CPU cores, not just one. This is a difficult task. As you can see, I came with some innovative ideas and hopes for a positive change. I was actually planning to submit a patch to gitea to add new fixed mainland and selection bug, then share my new very fast boom on Youtube. But if you do not want my contribution, fine, I guess I will leave you guys in peace. Kate out. -

I came back 1 and half year later hoping to make some positive changes, by helping new players in the lobby, fixing broken mods for people, testing out new features and explaining 0ad mechanics to everyone... I also made some new friends in the Discord server. Most people were very nice to me, so everything was smooth in the first 2 months and I thought this could be the beginning of some enjoyable time for everybody. It was all going well until Getriatrix (who is also known as may other accounts) recognised me and decided to harass me and troll me non-stop. I don't remember why he hated me so much, so I tried to respond politely to his false accusations and harassment initially. But he decides to do it at random times during games. I have reported his actions back to Dunedan, but he bypassed bans and made more accounts that were a total headache to me and many other players. It is important to note that I have never insulted him back or be toxic to anybody. I didn't even ban him from my games because I feared escalated aggression from him. My solution was to show everyone the reveal chat and stat mods so that people could detect him immediately and act accordingly. But after Dunedan warned me not to do so, so I deleted every trace of these potential cheat mods, including the github repo. Regarding Astra-, I don't want to say much apart from I have some replays featuring both of us simultaneously, including a 1v1 where I beat them. IP trace and eye witnesses will tell everything. So, @Norse_Harold, what is your intention now? I don't know why you created this topic, 1 year and half after all that has ended? You must admit, you did overstep your moderator role and monitored me outside of WFG platforms and used intrusive measures that are not a part of WFG terms. All of my complaints were true on my behalf. If you want to ban me again, good news for you, I have already uninstalled 0ad completely because I don't want to be trolled again by Getriatrix. You can ask Dunedan about the details; I accidentally saw your topic when I was writing to him. If you attempt to "enslave" me using some restitution scheme, I'm not going to fall for it a second time. I will not submit Timesheet records to you! I will not have to report to you all of my forum visit times and reading content! I will not allow you to scrap my work as you wish! I will only adhere to the official TOS and not to your clandestine bye-laws! My time is valuable! I am in a free country, not a slave kingdom of yours! -
It would only be less boring, because then a game won't have to end at min 18:00 because one dude spammed some uncounterable unit for another team. Another example is Ptol vs Ptol camel rush. Ptols have 0 way to defend against camels in P1 apart from spamming more. So whoever spams the most camels win. Given the current champ spam meta of A26, Brits do seem weaker than Gauls. That's primarily due to chariots instead of spear cav and missing the naked fanatic, which can counter champ cav. If Brits can have more diverse units then that would be better.
-
Problem is, nobody can agree on exactly what counts and cheating and what doesn't. We have a huge spectrum to tolerances from outlawing Ptolemies to allowing anything less than an Engine recompilation. There are hot debates about whether these are cheating: - Ptolemies - Using Roman and Macedonian spear cav to harass early - Using autotrain - Quickstart, ProGUI and other automations - Sniping - Dancing - AbstractGUI - Teleportation through buildings - Having better hardware and OS than other players

Who needs unit silhouettes when your Mainland looks like this? Leopard, download this mod at: https://github.com/xavaran-0ad/hyper0ad
-
We ended up in this position because of the need for balance and diversity. Some civs were OP. The solution was to delete units from the OP civs to make them weaker. More and more content was removed from the game and eventually the civs are broken like now. We've lost the Cardakes Mercenaries for Persians, the Stoa, the black cloaks, the rotary mill and god knows how much stuff before them. The better way to achieve balance and diversity is to give every civ some basic units (jav + sling or equivalent + archer) so that it's not fatally vulnerable, then add more faction specific bonus units on top of that. If a civ is weak, give it more units to strengthen it instead of cutting down everyone else. Leif has solved this problem by giving Kushites a slinger unit, a slave Archer to Spartans, axe to celts... now every civ in his mod is complete.
-
Every civ in vanilla 0ad is broken or incomplete with fatal vulnerabilities that can end the game. This is because almost every civ is missing something, so the player cannot respond effectively. Here is a list Athens - spear cav raid. Athens has no cavalry units that can counter such raids; sword and jav cav will get decimated. Brits - champ spear cav, champ archer cav, camel spam Gauls - the only one with no fatal weakness, but seriously lacks siege and archers - will get sniped by archer civ or die to turtle player. Romans and Spartans - no long range at all - will get sniped or stuck Ptols - lack mobility, lack cavalry, lack effective antiram Kush, Carth: dead if no additional metal mine. Only archers as ranged infantry is too weak. Maurya: archer only civ again, die to champ cavs Persians: no great flaw but infantry melee is weak Han: farming bug, crossbow units lack mobility, no javs or slings, have to train champions from special building... needless to say more xD Seleucids: will get sniped by Ptols A mod which fixes these problems is Leif @Emacz's historical-rebalance mod. We should play more games on this mod because it's more complete than vanilla and fixes these problems. Download here. https://github.com/Emacz2/leifs-sparta-patch

Hi, firstly if you are on windows, you are using the 32bit version which can use a maximum of 4GB RAM Secondly, the game is a single process; it only occupied one of your CPU cores. 9 if your cores are idle. Since Xeon have low frequency and mediocre single core performance , it will most certainly lag

Calling the game Alpha probably is not a very big factor. I think most people don't know what Alpha means in this context and probably won't delete the game immediately just because they see "under development". -
This champion spear cavs have been misused to the extent of ruining TGs. I noticed that the biggest abusers are Gauls and Macedonians, not Persians or Seleucids as you would expect. We can't fix it quickly as clearly nobody can reach agreement on how to change them, so here are some advice to countering champ cav spammers: 1. Ban spear cav champs from your TG. Don't be soft, we had to do this every Alpha. We've banned Celts in A23, archer civs in A24, Merc in A25 . Time for spear champs in A26. 2. Pick Spartan civ and make huge amounts of Hoplite + Leonidas. Replace dead Hoplites with Spartiates. Champ cav die on contact with Spartan infantry units. Spartans can also make their own spear cav to counter archer cav spam - good. Your 20 spear cav can also kill lone champs on their supply line. At the first sign of the champ spam, ignore your teammates, go straight for his base. Otherwise your team is dead if someone gets 30 champs. Ideally you play on fixed on fixed position map and place the Spartan player on the border, so that they don't have to walk far to defend against raids. 3. Don't pick these civs: Athen, Britons, Mauryas, Iberians, Han, because you will be sitting duck with 0 defence against them. Athenians have good Hoplites in theory, but they are too slow and these champ cavs will hit and run on your base. 4. If you get a civ with champ spear cav, your only way to survive is to spam champion cav faster than your enemy. Sword cav champs are more op than spear cav champs if you look at stats, but they are not as hated. Why? Because the spear cav champs counters other cavalry - basically bans the usage of any cavalry unit for the whole enemy team. You achieve cavalry monopoly. The advantage is then you can hit and run enemy bases without penalty. On top of that, spear cavs can beat spear inf so they are omnipotent on Mainland. Not all civs have spear inf champs so it's GG unless the other team is made of 4 good Spartan players. Sword cav champs will die to large number of citizen spear cav so it is counterable. With certain bonuses and heroes, these cavs have undying health and unparalleled speed - totally unbeatable. No skill is required to control them once you reach 40, 50 such units.

Good point The difference is, they are not one file. You first download a small installer exe, then when you launch this installer it retrieves data from the server. Some games only try to download data when you reach that relevant part of gameplay. 0ad can do the same: you download a tiny installer, which contains only the key dependencies and engine core. Then the installer downloads the big public data from the wfg servers. To make it fast for everyone, build in multithreaded parallel download into the installer. -

To maximise N, we need to maximise exposure of the game. Ads, appearance on Steam, GoG, Origin, Microsoft Store (these are disgusting places but are quick to get views). More involvement in alternatives.to, appear more on recommended lists etc. For example you can advertise as free alternative of AoE f1 is quite big imo, the media to the outside world does look attractive. We just need to make sure the description is pristine in every software store: Gnome Softare, KDE Discover, Flathub, Snap, ... f2 can be increased by making the download easier. I think in the main website, the https download llink could be made more obvious. You can even put the https download link in the first homepage with big attractive button around it. Maybe more modern design as well to make it look like a well maintained legit project. Also the download size is way too large, 1.32GB! Can we cut that down a bit? E.g. on Linux we separate the data from the base engine, can we do something similar in Windows? f3 is small and is something we can work on. I think the pregame page could be redesigned to guide new players better, e.g. by having large buttons for tutorials and guides in the middle to really emphasise where someone should click. The tutorial could use some improvement, for example not too much text. It really tests the patience of players. Use short sentences, 1 thing per page. We can even break up the tutorial into bits. The default settings could also be improved. The AI is set to medium by default. Petra is too aggressive. By default, it should be Easy + Defensive to ensure that the new player has time to explore before getting smashed. Experienced players know how to adjust settings so it's really not a problem for them. f4 is really dependent on how well f3 is received and whether the individual is into the RTS style. Not much we can do. But we can always say something like "there is so much more that you can explore!" f5 -- at the end of some hard campaign we can recommend them to join the lobby. Or, after they smash the very hard AI for the first time, we can do a popup message that says "Congrats! You have passed the trial, now you are ready to play with other humans!" f6 - we can add some social guidance on the lobby page. Some comforting messages like "try your best" "enjoy" "it's ok to loose" "don't give up" "have fun" , not the current harsh ones. Also it's important to explain to them not to try to join OP TGs on their first game as it won't be fun for anyone. q can be minimised by fixing some bugs and other problems. But that's really another story -

Let's think how a player progresses from completely unaware to a regular user: (at each step, N is multiplied by a fraction fi , 0 < fi < 1) - Discovery phase: N people hear about 0ad or see its existence, e.g on YouTube, in a Linux app store, walking across the website, FOSS recommendation etc. - Out of these people, f1 of the are attracted and try to download the game. - f2 successfully downloads and runs the game for the first time, the remaining fails due to whatever technical errors or just their own stupidity. Some people are driven away by the large download size. - f3 make it through the tutorial or some easy AI mode without loosing interest. From my personal experience, this number is quite small as I found it quite difficult to beat the easiest AI and the tutorial was long and tiring. The tutorial could be improved by having larger texts and ability to skip steps - f4 out of these decides to play AI the next day and the days after - we now have a casual singleplayer - f5 are bold enough to click on multiplayer and register their first account to the lobby - f6 of these are not discouraged by their village getting vapourised by inf at min 14 and decides to become regular players There is a fraction q of regular players who quit the game for whatever reason. In the end, we have the current lobby users: n = N * f1 f2 f3 f4 f5 f6 (1 - q) so ideally we maximise the values of N and f, then minimise the value of q -
The zip mods in this thread shared by the original author is deprecated with some errors, due to updates to the game. Some players are still interested in this and requested improvements to the terrain colourings. I fixed it: abstractGUI.zip This tiny zip of 5.3MB has all of the features in one go: cube trees, changes to berries and chicken, dark ground but with visible cliffs, golden projectiles...

There is a big need for these 2 maps in vanilla: Mainland balance is obviously superior to the imbalanced one so we can replace Mainland fixed pos is really important because we want to be able to put players at where they want to be. Ptol Iber on border, Pers Kush in the pocket. Also it allows better teamwork as some prefer pocket eco support, some prefer border skirmishes /rush. So I will make a patch diff soon, pls approve, thanks

Interesting idea! We can have a tech that allows Athenian farmers to produce 1 metal every 10 seconds. In addition, we can give Athenians a metal extractor building, which works identically to a field but produces metal instead of food when you assign workers onto it. This allows Athenians to consume metal even when they have run out of natural mines. These metal boosts enables the Athenian player to make large quantities of merc jav inf which takes advantage of Iphicrates bonus. Additionally, it allows them to counter champion cav with City Guards.
