  1. New Hero Portrait: King Nastasen

    By Sundiata (Malcolm Quartey)

    King Nastasen Kushite Pharaoh Kush Hero Portrait Nubia Sudan Africa Malcolm Quartey Sundiata D.jpg

    King Nastasen, a late Napatan Period ruler of the Kingdom of Kush, Sudan (4th Century B.C.).

    King Nastasen Ankhkhare was a Napatan Period ruler of the Kingdom of Kush (Sudan), ruled c. 335 B.C. - 315/310 B.C. His mother was Queen Pelkha and his father may have been King Harsiotef. Married to Queen Sekhmakh, and succeeded by King Aryamani. Nastasen is noted for defeating an Upper Egyptian invasion of Kush by Khabbash "taking many fine boats" and putting down many rebellions, thereby consolidating Harsiotef's earlier conquests. Most of what we know about Nastasen comes from the rather lengthy, and well preserved Stela of Nastasen.

    The submerged tomb underneath his pyramid at Nuri (Nuri 15) is currently under excavation by the Nuri Archaeological Expedition. Early results (remnants of gold) are indicating the real possibility that his tomb has not been looted, and his sarcophagus may still be intact! Because of high water levels the tomb is currently under water and archaeologists have to resort to underwater excavations with scuba gear, a first in Sudan. @OptimusShepard, I started this portrait exactly one day before you shared that documentary in the above post, half of which is about those very excavations! So that was really an incredible coincidence! Watching that docu was a bit surreal for me. And also a great source of inspiration!

    The Nastasen Stela:

    Nastasen Stela.jpg

    Some translated excerpts from the Nastasen Stela:

    Quote

    Horus: Mighty bull, Beloved-of-the-Ennead, Appearing-in-Napata,

    the bull who tramples those who rebel against him under his sandals,

    the great devouring lion,

    who establishes every land,

    son of Amun;

    whose khopesh is great;

    who widens every land;

    son of the gods;

    the powerful one

    who knows every word like Thoth does,

    son of Isis;

    the powerful one,

    whose birth the gods decided;

    who protects Two-lands;

    Son-of-Rê: Nastasen.

    Clearly, humility was not a thing Kushite kings were concerned with... :P

    Funnily, Nastasen is mounted on a horse in-game. From the stela we actually find this excerpt: "I went off on a great horse and I reached the Great House. They made obeisance' to me, all the notables and priests of Amun". Got to love 0 A.D....

    The rest of the Stela is about Nastasen slaughtering rebels, taking loot, defeating an invasion from Egypt, bigging up his mom, listing his donations to the temples etc, etc...

    @Stan`, here is a perfectly square PNG version for you:

    Carthage can build low walls in town phase and apartment blocks in city phase,

    We need this in vanilla as well. Not including the apartment blocks was a mistake, and low walls would be nice for all civs, even if it's just for us single player guys who love to beautify our base...

    Nice job dude! That's looking super cool! I was brought here by the 0AD twitter account. I'm a mesoamerican archaeologist and a historical ilustrator, and I'm open for discussion and advising if needed regarding any faction of the cultural region (as well as texturing if I can find the time).
    Here's my portfolio, hope you are still working on the subject:

    Wow, you're a very skilled artist. I believe I've shared two of your works somewhere on the forum before. I really like your dinosaur art as well... Any and all archaeological references, as well as accurate artistic reconstructions of both buildings as well as units (including your own), are more than welcome in these threads. Feel free to start your own art and history thread about specific references or information about interesting Mesoamerican cultures (maybe a period sparring partner for the Zapotecs in the Terra Magna mod?)

    • Falcon Scout special starting unit

    From an article on the upcoming AoE IV:

    Quote

    Everything in that trailer is real; everything we show will be in the final game. We have wall combat working. That falcon is real, that's gameplay, it's a scout unit.

    Mierda... :unsure: :P

    Anyway, good for them... We have this thread to prove that we didn't rip off AoE once we implement falcon scouts for 0AD :)

    @Sundiata, any historically inspired suggestions for an alternative?

    They were a major source of gold and ivory. Also iron, slaves, cattle and exotic animals. They always had far flung trade connections and traded in luxury products. So you could give them some kind of trade bonus. A higher rate of metal income from trading?

    They also built deep wells and water reservoirs to farm and keep livestock alive on the margins of the Sahel. A higher rate of food income from trading?

  7. I think we should have more. It helps a lot to not clutter up threads and quickly gauge community response.

    • Red heart button for "love"
    • Blue thumbs up for "like"

    A thumbs down button theoretically sounds logical, but for psychological reasons, it might not be advised. In theory we shouldn't let online interactions determine our feelings and state of mind, but reality is a different question. I think the "confused" choice is nuanced enough to express something akin to a dislike without being too harsh.

    Resultado de imagen para Numidians/numidian helmet archeology

    Remember that these are North African Berbers/proto-Berbers, not Sub Saharan Africans. They would have looked tanned, but not quite like that :P

    These guys look a little more realistic:

    Also, unit diversity is probably going to be a bit of an issue...

    They currently train limited numbers of weak gladiator champions

    'weak' i mean fast and less armored, similar to fanatics but not as powerful

    It's one of those things that armchair historians would love to hate. Although I was a little surprised that gladiators were indeed sometimes used as bodyguards and exceptionally even in battle. But they probably wouldn't have looked like gladiators in those contexts.

    Are the two gladiators inside the ring actually animated? That would be really cool.

  10. @Lion.Kanzen, I'd love to share more videos, but Ideally they should have the highest graphics settings enabled, which isn't often the case. (not really the fault of the video-makers, because they have to make a choice between fps and graphics settings which means graphic settings usually loose out. Ideally we need more optimizations to the game so that average machines can play with high graphics settings as well)

    Are the reddit and discord channels official? because I assumed they were self regulated kind of things.

    That's slightly better, and it's nice to see the appreciation for Mastodon, an open source alternative to the big social media sites.

    But we can still do a lot better than that. Come on my fellow forumites, let's push those numbers!

    So, this was super popular with the fans... I think we should really give it a function in-game.

    One of the Facebook fans asked:

    Quote

    Is this going to be a Roman equivalent of the Greek Theatron?

    I thought to myself, why not, actually?

    Quote
    • Theatron (Greek Theatre [500 m, 500 s, 500 sec]: Can be built only once. Increases the territory effects of all buildings by +20% while the Theatron exists.

    So maybe:

    Quote

    Amphitheatrum (Roman Amphitheatre [500 m, 500 s, 500 sec]: Can be built only once. Increases the territory effects of all buildings by +20% while the Amphitheatrum exists.)

    Maybe something more unique?

    Thoughts?
