troll A troll's guide to trolling and troll strategies in TGs and SP
Thalatta replied to Arup's topic in Gameplay Discussion
Never thought about this... even when it's like Athens' historical connection to its port (too bad in the game one can build docks on neutral territory, I'd reserve that just for some civs): Regarding the baking of champions, it does seem to me that's a bit OP, but I don't play MP. Related: why is it that a building cannot be set as its own rally point? Maybe because this strategy in general would become too OP? And yes, Hippocrates is the best, the AI can't deal with the nigh immortal army. -
An intermediate position, rather than making it invisible would be to deactivate the unit coloring, making it harder to spot when in a forest. But idk if its a good idea, sounds more like scouting and less than spying
- Today
-
An alternative could be having a spy unit that only the owner can see (or the enemy would see as its own), along with enemy Lookouts and maybe Towers, also becoming visible after performing some action. These actions could be bribing, revealing information usually hidden to the player (enemy garrisons I think? or whatever useful), assassination, Hero detection, infiltration (climbing walls and palisades), and opening gates, among whatever others can think of. These actions could be made easier or unlocked with experience (instead of having extra techs that will be hard to historically justify). I'd rather have added micro and complexity from more interesting things as these than from repeatedly clicking easily automatable stuff.
-
What do you think about an enlarged Spying tech branch in the Tech tree that includes a Bribing soldiers tech after a basic Bribing merchants tech?
-
Super this is great. I will close my PR.
-
@manowar, I will make a PR for the fix I suggested. I've just tested it and there doesn't seems to be any complication to it. It will fix a lot of bugs that happens when the territory owner and building owner are different players. Here are the results : The territory line still visually slightly goes into the CC footprint but that's just the polyline smoothing rendering of territory lines. You can still propose your PR if you think it make sense balance-wise. But as a fix, I would consider it improper, and I prefer to fix the underlying issue if it's possible (and it seems to work).

I just thought of documenting all these stuff, I don't even have pictures (I'll add them later) 1. Trump Wall As athens you can get a nice research in the sanate that gives you the ability to place walls in neutral territory. this way you can basically partition the entire map in two piece. with Themoclydes or whatever that hero's name is,he gives half construction time and 30% less cost so it's even better. do note that this works very well against annoying cav mfs. also a point to note is to not start to build walls directly from neutral territory. start building them from your territory otherwise the walls you build will fall to gaia. this way you have a literal wall which can act as a root for making storehouses in random places,or making entire forts and stables and barracks and basically a new frkn base without a cc. do note that this costs a shitton of stone and a fair amount of manpower for both gathering and building. so in most cases it's best not to do this, but it's very fun 2. BAKE SOME CITY GUARDS ingredients: Athen civ, Barrack, Hoplite Tradition research, Athenian Hoplites process: P2 Hoplite tradition then bake your Hoplites in the oven (barracks) for about 3 minutes. and voila! you will have fresh champions for barely half the cost! and even before p3! ready to invade with the rest of your army!! it's actually a very strong strat so you can actually do this one quite a lot of times and situations 3. Hippo smash (by now you might have guessed what my fav civ is and who's really the biggest worshipper of Athena) in phase 2,you can invade with peltast mercs, Hippocrates, and a primary citizen spear army with Hoplite tradition. make sure to get the hoplite tradition, and in the forge get the pierce resistance as well as ranged attack damage buffs this strategy focus on constantly bombarding your enemy. the hippo is a very underrated hero, you can spam healers with that hero and your army can be nigh immortal, filled with rank 3 and city guards in little time if the enemy doesn't pay attention. works best against noobs who don't know how to counter. pictures and more troll strats coming soon!!

@Emaczwhat's the speed of 'em horses in your mod? I think vanilla should match it albeit maybe just a tiny bit faster than your mod otherwise it will be too big a change
-
I can't suggest any help. You have to look further up in the output for what went wrong. For the download issue curl should have given you the answer and for openal the compiler. "Problems with spidermonkey" doesn't allow anyone to help. Always go back in the logs and look for the first issue.

I wholeheartedly agree. In fact, Delenda Est has this feature already. Subsequent UnitAI changes to the base game have made it a little buggy, but it could easily be added to the game without too much fuss. I've already created an issue on Gitea for this: https://gitea.wildfiregames.com/0ad/0ad/issues/9143 ^Rating: Must Have Indeed. I'd like to change the house from: Small House 5 pop 75 cost and Big House 10 pop 150 cost to these new stats: Small House 10 pop 100 cost and Big House 15 pop 150 cost and Tenement (Carthage and Rome) 20 pop 200 cost I've always thought that the pop bonuses and costs should be more aligned. The double cost and double benefit difference seemed too big to me. And then, I think, re-add the 2 pop cost for Citizen-Cavalry and Infantry Champions, and 3 pop cost for Cavalry Champions. And increase 'default' pop cap to 400. ^Rating: Should Have The word you're looking for is 'Tooltip.' I think most of us agree that they should be improved! I've made this gitea issue, which is very relevent: https://gitea.wildfiregames.com/0ad/0ad/issues/9166 ^Rating: Must Have

yeah, I agree I think that's a better idea than increasing the cost, as @LeJardindEpicure explained... it's already quite unrealistic for cav to be so so much faster than infantry
-
That is exactly the one I meant to refer to; the ideal scenario would be a modern speaker pronouncing Proto-Zapotec—I think that would be the closest possible approximation today.
-
It has to be Proto-Zapotec. One has to be careful because there are also intermediate languages between Proto-Zapotec and the Zapotec variants like Southern Zapotec, as is Proto-Southern-Zapotec for example. A fast search led me to a short Spanish Proto-Zapotec dictionary at the end of this 1973 publication: https://www.jstor.org/stable/1264826 (an account with Google can be made), but hopefully there are other dictionaries around.

I use such buildings a lot in HC, I’m not sure if they are in use in vanilla 0ad tho
-
Yes, I noticed because in these 10 minutes at last I kind of learned how to use the Editor In any case, my point in that link was not so much "two different mechanisms for the same effect", but that "there's no need for different buttons if the functions are similar and, if I'm not wrong, there's no overlap between them". Of course there are the differences you mention, but they are still similar things, although later on I stated that "maybe there's a case (or plan), to have structures that can be both garrisoned and posted (this should be the term, instead of "turreted")", in which case it would be fine to leave two buttons (although the "turret" naming should be corrected because, as I explained there, it makes no sense).
-
Sorry, they lose health, and fall off of it when they are killed.
-
First of all, I would like to commend you on your excellent work and dedication; I can imagine the challenges involved in this project. I believe this set would be extremely valuable for representing the Aztec civilization in a future mod set in the Middle Ages or the Early Modern period. However, I do not think it is suitable for the Zapotecs and Mayans, as they are distinct peoples with completely different languages. Given the available Zapotec material and the need to avoid Hispanic influences, I do not consider using Nahuatl to be the best approach for them. I recall seeing some Zapotec dictionary projects; with a little help, perhaps we could get something close enough to be decent? The same approach would work for Mayan languages—which might actually be easier, given the more comprehensive linguistic studies available.
-
You mean that, if they are shot, they don't lose health, but they fall from up there?
-
Garrisoning hides the unit inside of the building, spitting them out when it is destroyed. They also add to the building’s default arrow count. Turreting places the unit on top of the building, kicking them off when it’s destroyed, and also allowing them to be shot off of it. They don’t add to the default arrow count (if there is one), but since only archers, slingers, and javelineers (and Crossbowman) can be placed on top, they can fire on their own.

I'm sorry, but this makes absolutely no sense. Nahuatl appeared centuries after the time frame of Empires Ascendant. The Maya didn't speak Nahuatl. They didn't even speak languages that are part of the broader Uto-Aztecan language family.
-
Ah, I should clarify more on the voicepack. It is all done in nahuatl, I completely avoided the original Zapotec language for several reasons. Actual hard data that was not guesswork was frankly lacking, and I only later found anything worthwhile after I decided to abandon my original approach. The modern derivates of the Zapotec language display heavy hispanification and are hydra-headed, and I am no Hercules. Part of my goal was to make a voicepack that could be potentially utilized by the Maya faction civilization too, and so the emphasis switched to a more universal tongue. The list of commands I had voiced should be right here in this link: https://trac.wildfiregames.com/wiki/Audio_Voice_List Also as I mentioned in the above post, I made alternatives for several of them, though...that was due to confusing my memory of the list with the commands I was studying within Empires Ascendant itself.

-
How did you deal with the problems of Proto-Zapotec tonal reconstruction? Which one have you followed? The list of commands and a reference to their reconstruction would be nice to see.
-
About point 16, i do agree we need to make use of the spying mechanics. Currently it is never used since not much players train merchants. I would suggest expanding the list of bribable units. I understand that its more logic to bribe a merchant than a soldier but we need, in my opinion, to find a way to make this work.
