@Yekaterina
I am a software Engineer who want to work and get the crap done and play 0AD, I am the lazy guy.
I am talking about people you think who are the good guys in your example those

who want to optimize and deliver best quality product

they all use windows because company want them to use it and that's it,

all they care about is the work they do

they never get out of that box and don't want to,

when I told them using Linux is good way to support free software they laugh and I am the idiot because using linux is pain for those don't know it,

they only care about their productivity as does the company

they don't care about free software and they will care only if the company cares.

and speaking about games is sin if you SE
they avoid it at all cost because games have side effects

I am doing work game youtube
may be I should stop working lol

YouTube is the fastest way to popularise 0ad, because even though it is far from ideal, a huge proportion of population in the world still use it. Hence we can expose 0ad videos to publicity quickly by putting your excellent commentary videos next to Mr.Beast's stupidity demonstrations with 10M views.

To show you the average quality of YouTube videos, I used a freshly installed browser with no history to open YouTube, and this is the home page. image.thumb.png.d39d95c9abfdf99b74a4aa0144f8e864.png

If I search 0ad:

image.thumb.png.4393f8b93296f8b4720fab778d315882.png

It only returns the most prominent YouTube channels instead of actually relevant content. You can't see a single non-cosmic player here; no Vali, no leopard, no Jim, no Zxphxr. When I scroll down the page all I see is some popular RTS YouTuber trying the game for once; there no good TG commentary videos.

Even if I specifically search for pro games, I get Terminator and Resonator again and no actual good TG videos.

Older videos are completely buried.

YouTube's nub search AI prevents the best advertisements of the game from being discovered so we have few players even though the game has existed for more than a decade.

@leopard if people don't accept Linux then no need to tell them about it. Let them die to stupid Windows.

For software development I would like to recommend a few open source software:

  • Kdevelop
  • Geany
  • Kate

To replace Windows apps:

Microsoft Office -> LibreOffice, OnlyOffice, WPS (not entirely open source but Linux version has been neutered by AUR)

To receive outlook emails: use thunderbird and the correct configurations

OneNote -> Xournal++

Onedrive -> too many alternatives to list.

You  can also run toxic microsoft stuff in a container, for example install 4 different browsers and just sacrifice one of them to deal with proprietary junk.

@BreakfastBurrito_007

on Linux 0AD can use as much RAM as you physically got, but on windows it crashes if a battle uses more than 4GB.

On Linux u can multi instance: can wait for players and watch past replays at the same time, or wait and spec and the same time. Windows users don't even dream about it

TLS encryption only works for Linux users.

Dev work easier on Linux using Dolphin file browser which has tabs inside windows.

Smoother integration between 0ad and OS. On windows u have to install visual studio to compile svn source code.

The difference between open source and windows is like 0ad vs AoE

0ad is totally fair, has no ads, no pay to win, no nonsense spyware.

AoE asks u money just to download it. Many simialr games even insert ads and ask u to purchase tools to win. Then they violate your privacy and spy on you

But many idiots still play AoE instead of 0ad because the AoE advertisement reached them first. None of them had the common sense to search "open source games like AoE"

@Yekaterina we should not call them idiots when it comes to choice of games or Operating Systems,

If a lot of people find value in one OS or games, I believe that inherently it has some value,

For example most software companies will only trust Linux more than windows in their servers because Linux is superior to windows when it comes to managing servers.

Big tech companies are investing in Linux and they are kind of premium members of Linux foundation and linux is getting big money due to this companies.

but desktop linux is divided into different distros

and each distro is nothing more than a glorified repo to host OS and application and one different way to install linux.

I felt like the leading Desktop Environment like gnome is kind of a copy cat of MacOS.

also for general users using even a windows machine is hard

I believe a lot of people use windows because the people sell them their machine don't know much about Linux.

When I bought a laptop from a local shop they know how to install windows inside but when I asked them to do a dual boot and install linux in it.

they kind of talked like superstitious people and said that is impossible to dual boot that laptop

so I came home and installed fedora myself but I had to get help from online resources on how to do it and in the process I was able to learn some thing about the machine I am using.

what I am asking is what choice does a non technical person have if the sellers won't support linux.

It's plain simple like Linus torvalds said they have to do it themselves.

most people are interested in using this sophisticated machine to do daily tasks and don't want to get in trouble by tweaking it or changing it

because if they do something wrong all that the machine is going to show is a black screen.

but I won't call them idiots just because they cannot change OS in their system.

I own a motorcycle I don't change oil in it or change ABS liquid or try to tweak then engine.
I take it to the mechanic and I will never try to do that myself because it's a life and death problem

and I am not a mechanic

Even if I can learn it I don't want to because I am not interested in it, I just want to ride my motorcycle from point A to point B.

without marketing people won't learn about product

I think we have to face the reality that not all people are technical.

and technical knowledge varies from person to person

not every 0AD player is a doing development of 0AD only a few people developing the game and I think they don't get much time to play the game at all.
I also want to talk about AOE and 0AD comparison
but I am ending this post because It seems like I wrote too much in one post may be readers will loose interest if I put everything in one post.
I will continue If you want to hear about it and if you agree what I write makes some sense.

Very difficult, the company is only interested in popularizing stupidity and ignorance.

I would have to recommend YouTube if you play RTS and still recommend Age of Empires.

You would have to search for new RTS to discover 0AD.

Google or Pinterest is more likely to show you images of the game.

YouTube's nub search AI prevents the best advertisements of the game from being discovered so we have few players even though the game has existed for more than a decade.

It's search strategy is different and viewers of content decides which content gets promoted,

for example the videos created by me are getting very poor response from already existing viewers and subscribers

people don't watch a full video so YouTube think its not worth showing to others

my average view time is very low

if someone starts watching it they just go to next video ignoring my content

also people never put a like in my videos because I don't think they value 0AD game streams

even 0AD players have mentioned my videos are noob and some op players have bullied me and told me I shouldn't play 0AD and should stop talking about it.

so without people supporting its hard to promote in youtube

if people don't watch, youtube will not promote. it is as simple as that.

and also charm of presenter in videos is a big factor getting it promoted that is why I try to get more experienced players to talk in 0AD streams

but most do it for one or two days and stop coming back to talk may be it's because of me I don't know.

valihrant Alistair findlay Tom 0AD 0AD newbierush  are the most viewed channels but they didn't get much support I think
@mysticjim stopped 0AD videos and he is not responding to any queries,

also valihrant seems not interested anymore

I see Tom 0AD in lobby when he is free but seems like he is not doing much videos because of his busy life.

Alistair findlay last video was a live stream and no new videos

without peoples support youtubers cannot reach anywhere

@MarcusAureliu#s has started a new channel and I think his channel can make an impact probably

but it's all comes to the youtube viewers

age of empires get much attention because there are a lot of age of empires youtubers and also

companies like red bull conduct tournaments with big cash prizes

and company behind age of empires itself promote it in youtube

also I think 0AD should have a steam page at least even though we don't want to distribute the game in steam

we will need more gamers

also 0AD should make more official videos to promote the game.
