  1. So I think we can use some of the old encyclopedia entries as springboards, but I don't think they should be used in the new version. Also, I think we could expand the civilization overview. Finally, looking at Sparta there are some gameplay elements that don't add up to history, namely the markets. Sparta after their reforms didn't really trade because they had iron currency. I don't think that's a big issue, we can just mention that in the market encyclopedia!
  2. So what do we do the xml.cached.xmb files? I'm assuming we can just leave them and if we run pyrogenisis they'll be recompiled with the new xml.
  3. Thanks. I noticed that the mod adds some improvements to the tooltips. Would you be willing to update the GUI parts into the mod, so we can all benefit from cool tabbing into the game? It would make it a lot better. So yeah, the giant elephant in the room is translating. However, it isn't as if the game breaks if the things are translated. If we get the encyclopedia into tip-top shape, the translators will have to do it once and then will be able to never have to do it again.
  4. So we could use some of the encyclopedia from change set 19959. They seem pretty much in line with what we need. However, of the ones I saw, I thought we could add a bit more information/ edit. https://trac.wildfiregames.com/browser/ps/trunk/binaries/data/mods/public/simulation/templates/units?rev=19959&order=name
  5. Publishers don't own the information. So if we use multiple sources and don't copy and paste it word for word, we'll be good. I was planning on writing from memory stuff about Spartans. Another thought was that we should use first-hand sources like Plutarch or Herodotus. I'll add the style guide to the repo.
  6. I added fish. Another thing we should say is please just don't copy off Wikipedia. You can use Wikipedia for some of your sources but try not to just copy word for word. Use the report lessons you learned in school. Also I'm writing without talking about modern time. I think we should make that a style rule. Also another rule should be unbiased history (but I don't think that'll be a problem) If no one object's I'll put those rules in a RULES file in the repository.
  7. Me too. In fact I'd love the historians and other people to start PRing. I'll add the fish to the mod.
  8. I am also not a big fan of Wikipedia. It's OK for a general precursory search or even for looking up the details of a game. However, there have been some people who write there are biased against certain things. With history can't be always trusted, It shouldn't be discounted offhand, but a second or third source would be welcome. I've only had problems with Wikipedia when it comes to politics or ancient history stuff relating to the Bible, I am sort of willing to trust it with fish.
  9. So I'm starting it easy with the fish. Tuna: Tuna are fish that belong to the tribe Thunnini. They live in warm saltwater and have sizes ranging from 1.6 feet to 15 feet. They are one of the few species of fish that can regulate their own temperature. Sources: Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuna and Encyclopedia Brittanica : https://www.britannica.com/animal/tuna-fish Tilaphia: Tilapia is the common name for almost a hundred species of freshwater fish. Who were fished everywhere, from the Nile to the Sea of Galilee. Sources: Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilapia The "Generic Fish" was harder: Fish has always been a good way to gather food. Not only are fish healthy, but they are abundant in most large bodies of water. Sources: My head. If no one has any concerns, I'll comment these changes to the repository as soon as I can.
  10. Ok. https://github.com/TheShadowOfHassen/0-ad-history-encyclopedia-mod I made it. PRs are welcome, so are read overs of other people's content. I have no clue how to write a ymal like the one Pony's ascendant has, but it'd be useful if we could automate this to go on mod.io.
  11. Should we put descriptions for things like grapes and fish as well? I mean, a paragraph on how grapes were used in Hellenistic culture would be interesting.
  12. Alright, should that be in this discussion or in a folder in the mod's repository. I can create a GitHub repository for a mod (for current holding) as long as anyone doesn't have any objections/ better ideas.
  13. That's true, however what's the qualification of the source. I mean, I assume we all know some facts about the Spartans and that it'd be a pain to track done a source from every single fact (even though we might have learned it from something else)
  14. I got a working mod up for a 27 for starters (I know A 27 is an alpha- alpha but I took the data from a27 to make the mod)
  15. @Lion.Kanzen Do you want me to create a GitHub repository to manage this mod? We can use this discussion to organize our attack/ I'll merge PRs and set the repository up to automatically add to my mod.io
  16. So I got the tags working a bit. You have to add in the <Identity> Tag the sub items <History><\History> and then it'll pop up. So, should we lay out a few rules like unbiased view on history, and so on? I'm assuming we'll write it in en_US because I don't know any other language. I do think we should use LanguageTool to help catch typos. Also, where will we put the writing in a mod first? Or is there a better way?
  17. Ok. I guess we'll just have to make it. First, I think it goes without saying that we're trying to only do a few paragraphs for each unit, make them unbiased and historically accurate. I don't think we need to cite sources, however. I found out the tag we need is inside the identity tag set and is <History></History> Thanks to @wowgetoffyourcellphonefor that. So should we make this a mod first or just try to put it in the code? I also think we should write it for en_US and use LanguageTool to help, and then the translators can change it.
  18. The encyclopedia. I don't see it in the game. Did I just miss it, or did you put it back in? Or is that a screenshot of something from a different game and this is the place to talk about making one for 0 A.D.?
  19. Thanks! That'll help. Lion.Kanzen posted this: Does that use that history tag?
  20. Um. I tried to add a tag to the spartan women, and it wouldn't pop up. Is there a bit more nuance. Is it <History> not <history>? Or do you have to put it in the identity sub-section? Once I get something to show for it, I might make a github repository and a forum discussion for adding history text. At first, it'd be a mod, but obviously It'd be cool to have it in with the main game. However, for a discussion I have no idea what category to put it in. it's not gameplay, and it is technically only a mod until it can be added to the main game.
  21. To get a mod on mod.io I have to get approved. Once that's done, anyone can test it by installing it through the 0 A.D. mod launcher Secret forums?!? That's pretty cool... I've been reading up on Greek and Hellenistic cultures, so I already know some of the history/ culture and I can always look stuff up. Maybe there should be a different discussion about writing unit encyclopedias? I mean, assuming that's a feature that the developers want.
  22. I want it to be for the main game. I'm using the mod to make it easier for people to test it. I'll put it in the general forum as soon as it's approved. So would anyone know where the original historical discussions for the more stable factions (Greece/ Briton etc.)?
  23. So, I did the config and it runs well. My computer has had graphics problems before.
