  1. LordGood, could you make a video of painting such a unit portrait? That would be awesome to post as a fundraiser update!

  2. They're quite different already even at this early stage of their profile. Also, I've conceptually split the "Hellenistic" factions into two: The Greek States and The Successors. See here: http://play0ad.com/game-info/factions/ Long story short, each culture gets a common special building and special techs/bonuses. The "Greek States" or "Hellenic States" are Athens, Sparta, and Macedonia. The "Successors" are Macedonia, Seleucids, Ptolemies. See, the Macedonians are the bridge between the two, so get the special building and special tech of each one. Hellenics get the Theater, Successors get the Library, Macedonia gets both. If we ever add smaller factions, like Thebans and Epirotes, they'd be Hellenic and Successor cultures respectively. Oh yes. I'd love for them to get their own Hellenistic building set to make them stand out from the Hellenic States culture.

  4. This video more or less covers my feelings about most so called modern games in general (so "modern" became a negative attribute in this context for me). Hype the graphics (and often enough add violence I personally don't even like) but ignore game features, playability, balancing, challenge (particularly vs. AI) and especially replayability. ...and I think they are doing this on purpose (e.g. to ensure boredom after a short amount of time to make you buy the next game). In fact I think marketing, public relations, franchise and advertisement (as is now and especially the direction it goes) is bad for people (yes, even for those working in that area). So please take care of what aspects of modern games you want to get into 0 A.D.. Especially for an open source project stability, playability, balancing, compatibility, replayability and modability are much more valuable than graphics or how polished everything is. That does not mean those couldn't be enhanced but IMO shouldn't at the price of one of the others. Yes, cool graphics also encourage PPL to contribute to a project and draws others to play it. But in the long run it's more important which way those contributions go and how long players stick with a game (again especially for an open source project).

  5. Just wanted to point out that you now have competition

  6. It's quite obvious we've been looking for a Sound Lead for the past few years - it's been mentioned in most of our release announcements. Right now, we have two applicants fighting for the top spot, LAVS and Sorpico

  7. What changes I make in English strings I make them on the game. (Then I have those strings extracted into a POT file that is uploaded to Transifex.) I will have that Spartan string fixed in a couple of minutes, thanks again!

  8. I think a better approach is to find someone with a very strong command of the English language, a lot of experience writing in English, and a lot of willingness to help you learn!

  9. will there be some hellenic look-alike structures? like statues and pilars from the tipe corithian?

  10. Fixed the unnecessarily-different strings as well. If you build the game from sources using the internationalization branch, feel free to report space issues in the interface as well. I for one need to make the Team column wider both in the game setup dialog and the Diplomacy dialog.

  11. OK, the “None” issue is solved now. You have three different translation context: ai (no ai engine), team (no team), or victory (no victory condition).

  12. That sounds like a ton of fun. I don't think I have much time though, I usually just punch out a few details between classes. I'm downloading camstudio, maybe after I get the brit barracks built I can scribble up something this week.

  14. I uploaded another version of the patch : http://trac.wildfiregames.com/ticket/799#comment:17 mimo had been able to make it function, does anyone experience the same problem as sanderd17 ?

  15. My biggest anger here is how hugely the gaming media hyped this game. If I can use a crass word, "whoring" comes to mind. The big time gaming media has 100% sold out to graphics and hype. So many pre-release reviews have given the game 90%+ ratings or 9s out of 10 it's sickening. With so many problems, the game is a 7 out of 10 and that's being generous based on the graphics and animations. Gotta keep those advertising dollars rolling. Never trust PC Gamer. Never trust any of those rags. And never ever ever pre-order a super-hyped AAA game at 70 bucks a pop based on the recommendation of commercial gaming media. Don't trust them.

  16. Me too, but I'm a language geek, so does that count?

  17. I would personally favor using the actual Ancient Greek alphabet. Same for other languages where possible.

  18. Ok, thanks - I had not thought of trac (for spelling ...). Tickets are certainly the best way to be seen. - For "% f" or others, I would download/modify/upload (well, I'll try) - And if you receive a report on the comments that I post on Transiflex (like the "none"), I would pass by there to Transiflex internal problems.

  19. You are forgetting the Xiongnu. They were sort of "proto-Mongols": they had a big emphasis in horse archery and tribal structures. Their confederation was so strong that it took the Han (at its heighest) nearly one century of 'total war' to subjugate them. Thought I'm not certain, I think that the Hun migration was (partially?) caused by the confederation's defeat against the Han. P.S.: Please correct me if I wrote something wrong. 0 - 500 AD history is a rather 'foggy' subject to me.

  20. The diacritical marks are good for the reason that Thorfinn said it's just that English speakers are not familiar with them as English is one of the few languages that avoids them. Enjoy the Choice

  21. Regarding where to provide feedback, it’s up to you. Right now, possible places are: • Here, in the forums, in this thread or a new thread. It’s not that bad a place. • In Transifex. One of you two reported the None issue there and I got that report as well. • In my Github’s Issue tracker. As soon as the internationalization implementation is up, though, we should use 0 A.D.’s Trac. By the way, feel free to report size issues as well. The current GUI implementation is not the best, and I don’t think it would be easy to make things adapt to text size, but we can always simply make things bigger

  22. Regarding % f, that is a known limitation of Transifex. You can download the French translation for offline translation as a PO file, edit the translation in an editor such as PoEdit or Localize, and then upload the translation. This will allow you to bypass this limitation. I’ve noted the rest of the feedback.

  23. I had forgotten to "follow" this thread. I already took note of the None thing, I will also look into the rest. Thanks a lot for the feedback.

  24. Might not be a bad idea, we don't want what happened to the Ubuntu Forums to happen here (who thought they would be hacked?).

  25. IMO we shouldn't drop ARB support at all unless someone is really overhauling the rendering engine in such a way that supporting both is too much of an obstacle (not simply an inconvenience). I don't think that is likely, but we can cross that bridge when we get there. The way to proceed with GLSL is to clean up its existing code, make sure we detect GLSL support properly (not a config option), begin enabling it on supported systems and noting which drivers and GPUs have GLSL support but perform poorly or are buggy, and fall back to ARB on those systems, the kind of thing we already do in HWDetect.

  26. Next to the heroes button, why not show the entire (non-garrisoned) population ordered by type. So you can e.g. select all females at once, and garrison them in a safe place. Or select all cavalry at once, and lead them to a battle. Now, there's a chance that you fight a battle, and when it's finished, you see 5 cavalry men standing behind a rock. When the numbers are shown (just like when you select multiple items), you can also see which types are losing too quickly and retreat them (e.g. if archers got in the middle of the battle). I also wonder with the patrolling, how would you define the path, or would it automatically be the boundaries of your territory?

  27. Instead of the 'Heroes' button, i'd rather see the portraits of each one. It makes them more than special units, it makes them unique. Look at them at the top-left corner of the screen here:

  28. Attack move: You can add AOM, AOE3, Battle for middle earth and C&C3 too. I think this is one of the most important features that must be in the game.
