  1. I believe under Alfred the Great, but the Normans had most influence since they remained. Yep, Scotland remained independent for a long time, don't remember until when though (somewhere between the 16th and 18th century?).
  2. In Wales and Scotland (Ireland too if you insist). Scotland always remained independant. The Romans never conquered it (Hadrian's wall was the border of the Roman Empire on the island), nor did the Anglo-Saxons. Wales was conquered by the Romans, but it didn't mean they lost their Celtic culture. When the Romans left and Germanic tribes like the Saxons invaded Britain they only invaded England while Wales staid independant for a long time. When the Celts entered Britain isn't exactly sure. Lately there were some theories that say there is not enough proof for a Celtic invasion, but of course we can't ignore the similarity between the Celtic culture and the culture of the people living on the island in that period. What's generally believed is the mostly Belgian Celts conquered the island. I don't remember the dates though, I'm sure Kor would know it.
  3. I guess I already answered part of that in the 1066 thread. It had the most significant impact on the language. The people who lived in England spoke a Germanic tongue, while the Normans spoke a Latin tongue (French). This explains why so many French words are also used in English. The Normans formed the aristocracy and continued to speak French. This becomes very clear if you analyse some English words: judicial terms: justice, court, judge, ... political terms: empire, duke, ... Food as when it's prepared: mutton, porc, ... All French words On the other hand, if you take more common words: Food that's still alive (aka animals ) sheep, pig, ... The are Germanic words In the end the Germanic tongue stayed superior, probably because the common people, which is the large majority of the population, spoke it. So the French only remained in some words, but didn't reform the whole language. I don't know how many other things that have changed culturally. Of course the reign of the Normans meant more contact with France and its culture, so in the early days there must have been a lot of influence.
  4. Lol this one's easy. It's the year when William the Conqueror, the duke of Normandy, invaded England and deafted the English army (of Harold II) at Hastings aka 'The Battle of Hastings'. The date is a virtual turning point in British history because it was the first step at the British Empire (centralisation under the Normandians) and the beginning of the French influence. The similarity between many English and French words date from that period, since the Normandians (or Normans) spoke French (of course an old tongue). It also drew more clear lines between the plebs (common people) and aristocracy. The aristocracy were mostly Normans, who also insisted on speaking French (although the Germanic English language stayed superior), the plebs were people who already lived there (Germanic and Celtic people). A very known piece of art concerning the Battle of Hastings is the Bayeux Tapestry, whichs shows Norman cavalry fighting the enemy.

    Rep

    I had a look: The problem is indeed the 5+ rep. If it's added manually through the admin panel it'll reflect in a 5- in your rep listing and in a 5+ in your total rep. I think it can be fixed by adding rep the normal way, or editing the db data. Maybe contact Tim about it, to make him aware of the problem.

    Rep

    Yeah it must have been the 5+ rep you got for the MotM award. I'll have a look into it and if I can't find the problem I'll pass it on to my superior
  7. That's very cool Zezar We already have ads on the forums, and ATM that's enough I think. Dunno about ads in the game menu, although it's worth to have a discussion about that imo.
  8. Had my finger between a door that was shut very hard. During the following months my finger turned in all the colors of the rainbow
  9. @Argalius: Which host are you using? Tripod for example doesn't allow hosting images to display on other domains. Another problem could be the size of the image.
  10. I don't really find it either, I just end up with the same long thing as Tim Btw you made mistake in the beginning, so if you fix that your sollution could be right? c^2 - a = 3 <=> a = c^2 / 3 (2) it's: c^2 - a = 3 <=> a = c^2 - 3
  11. Cool Well I'm not good at asking questions, so anyone else who likes to ask one, go ahead
  12. a^2 + b^2 = -10 3a - b = 0 (a^2 + b^2)/10 = -1 => (a^2 + b^2)/10 = i^2 3a - b = 0 => b = 3a; a = b/3 => (a^2 + 9a^2)/10 = i^2 => a^2 = i^2 => a = i => b = 3i or => a = -i => b = -3i Not sure if that's right, the only thing I remembered is that i^2 = -1, so I went further on that.
  13. I don't think that's possible Edit: Oh complex numbers...can't remember how to work with those anymore
  14. Hmmm I think this doesn't belong here, moving to General Chat Yep I think you got that right Argalius, I'm not competely sure though.
  15. No school for me until September 20th I'm currently working at home, doing some student's jobs and practicing to get my driver's license next week.
  16. Yeah you should propose your friend to buy a belt or something Nice pics
  17. Well that traffic attitude is something Belgians have in common too Other than that, yeah, typically Italian
  18. Lol, that thing Zen posted made me worry for a while too...until I noticed the date
  19. @Jeru Yep but I think the difference is that we get these classes for 4 years. The first 2 years of highschool are more introductions to these classes. Well that is if I read correctly that you only had them for 1 year.
  20. Ce film ressemble Death Poets Society un peu. Tu as déjà vu ce film?
  21. I've gone through a similar thing. I was dating a girl but here parents are Christian and quite fanatic about it. So they didn't really like it that she was dating an atheist. Her mother didn't have too many problems with it though, I'm always friendly and kind so she liked me. Her dad however saw me as an evil atheist (although I never even mentioned it or talking about religion with them). My best friend went to the same Christian community as she, so his parents started to "insult" me too when I started dating her. They said I'm someone who has had tons of gf's already and doesn't care much about it, but actually that wasn't true at all. My best friend was the guy who is/was like that about girls, I've always been very serious about it. So we split up eventually, partly because of her dad and my friend's mother trying to ruin our relationship. Things like this might be a serious issue, but remember that every situation is different. Just be nice and friendly but also stay yourself. Many parents need to get over this, it's not so easy for them to 'give' their child to a stranger, but they'll get used to it.
  22. Well our system goes like this: You choose your area of interest. I'll only give the highest choices because otherwise my description would be too long Science Maths Languages If you choose science you'll get everything but a bit less maths and less languages but more science If you choose maths you'll get a bit less science and less languages but more maths If you choose languages you get very little math and science but a lot of languages (dutch, english, french, latin, spanish and german). You take this choice in the 3rd your of high school. So 4 years long you'll get all this stuff. Each year you'll get the same classes but of course the level gets higher. The importance is calculated in hours a week, so in my case (I took Latin-maths with 6 hours of maths which is a bit more oriented to science): Dutch (4), English (2), French (3), Latin (4), history (2), geography (1), religion/philosophy (2), maths (6), chemics (2), physics (2), biology (2), sports (2), computer science (1). The science I had was the highest level you could choose but the science students get for each class one hour extra. They don't get any theory in that hour though, only practical stuff like labs. I had the highest level of science because I did 6 hours of maths instead of 8.
