  1. Here's a preview of the portrait There's a lot of little adjustments to be made. The rim light on the right side is just a test, so that's why those lines are all sketchy. What do you guys think? Any suggestions?

  4. It actually has very little to do with Nazism, and everything to do with the Khazar Hypothesis of Ashkenazi Ancestry, and the possible implications for political Zionism. Some of the prominent proponents of the theory were/are actually Jewish themselves. This Khazar Hypothesis states that the Ashkenazim are largely, or in part descended from Khazar Jews. This potentially undermines one of the fundamental pillars upon which the modern state of Israel is founded, as it questions the Middle Eastern origin of many of the European Jews. ("one nation solemnly promised to a second nation the country of a third."). Therefore people studying, or even discussing the theory are automatically branded anti-semitic, for political reasons. Of course, the fact that there are also anti-semites promoting the theory doesn't help either... That having said, genetic studies don't really seem to back up the Khazar Hypothesis. Any admixture seems to have been marginal. Although I'm very confused what exactly they were testing Ashkenazim genes against, because ancient Khazar ethnicity is exceedingly obscure, complicated and heterogenous... If they don't know who the ancient Khazars were from a genetic/ethnic point of view, how in the world do they test the Hypothesis (no verification samples)? Anyway, it seems obvious that all the historical Jewish populations of the world, including Ashkenazim are at least somewhat related to each other, as well as to the people of their host-countries, as well as to the Arabs of North Africa and the Levant, including Palestinians. Anybody making absolute claims about Ashkenazim solely being descendants from Khazars, or Central/East Europeans vs Ashkenazim solely being descendants from levantine Jews, is bound to be wrong. Genes and population movements are always really complicated.

  6. Well, it is mostly a matter of political interest and all the studies on this hypothesis are really subjective, therefore hard to interpret. As you said, there are several oversimplifications of their population history and all the conclusions are not really scientific nor historic. From my perspective, the simple fact to justify or to deny the right of a population over a territory by their supposed genetic origin is dull.

  7. Simply because there were a lot of anti-Semitic aspects in 20th century (and generally throughout history) does not mean that the topic should not be mentioned. As there seems to be no racist comments, I only find that it does a disservice to the Khazars and Jews to actively not mention them just because of the controversies.

When we activate the mod and try to enter the Lobby under Multiplayer, the game gives an error message: https://gyazo.com/f70bd1244e8b71ee74866107b303f7a2 And then you can't click anywhere, having to restart the game.

  11. Irredentism can be an ugly thing... Even the different types of genetic studies are so varied and difficult to interpret, even by the experts. Different researchers can sometimes come up with wildly differing conclusions from one and the same study. There are just too many factors. Samples are often suspiciously small, ignore "outliers", use questionable "proxy populations", focus too strongly on lineal descendants, and ignore collateral kin and stuff like that... Then there's wild card concepts like genetic drift, which can cause gene variants to disappear and completely obscure certain ancestries, or "cause initially rare alleles to become much more frequent and even fixed", resulting in the possible "over-estimation" of certain ancestries. Genetic studies are interesting, but they're also a mess... Right back where we started... Has it ever really been any different though?

  15. @vladislavbelov : an informed observation, but it only affects boundaries of straight interface elements, and only in some cases, depending on background. In my opinion, a very acceptable trade off for the improved overall image quality. The shader has its source code editable from the game (maybe you can have a source of inspiration there) and can use various strategies, having several parameters configurable by interface - it might be possible to obtain a better result tinkering with it. @gameboy: the beauty of it is that reShade is free and OPEN SOURCE, is here now, it installs over the game in less than 5 minutes (it simply puts some files along the executable) and can be removed at will. Also it offers a treasure of additional plugins and effects, that can be used to enhance the graphics of the game beyond any future development you might have hoped. While no doubt AA is a very important quality feature, this is a free development, and having to do a small customization yourself, is a little price to pay. Not to mention the fun you can have modding yourself.. Here is a short tutorial on how to install reShade as to enable SMAA anti-aliasing: 1. Go to https://reshade.me/ and download the setup. Direct link: https://reshade.me/downloads/ReShade_Setup_4.0.2.exe 2. run the setup, it will ask you to locate the game executable. ("..0 A.D. alpha\binaries\system\pyrogenesis.exe") 3. when asked to select engine type, you click on OpenGL radio button (possibly already checked) (also repeat those steps to un-install if needed, or add new shaders) 4. will ask if to download shaders library, say yes, and from the list select ONLY SMAA for start - click next - etc. it will say that it succeded instalation, and you can close the window at this point. 5. Start the game normally - even start a skirmish session 6. Use HOME key to bring/hide reShade interface from within the game 7. Check the SMAA checkbox, check Performance mode, maybe hit reload. The AA should be visible by now 8. hit HOME to hide the interface 9. Have fun. There are gamers out there reShading every game they have. As for myself, I love the thing, I already install it on varius games to play with Depth3D. A must for every PC hardcore gamer out there - and a wonderful exmple why PC gaming is great. Trivia: SMAA is opensource and was developed at Technical University of Zaragoza, my city. Makes me proud a little. Peace.

  17. Each age features one or two primary cultures. A "primary culture" may be defined as the strongest and most influential culture of its age. Like Mesoamerica, the Andean region features a mother culture: the Chavin culture, which diffused widely and served as the foundation of subsequent Andean cultures. This culture is named after its main settlement, Chavin de Huantar, which consists of a temple complex surrounded by a town. The temple complex features an abundance of imaginative stone sculptures, which combine elements of humans, cats, birds, and reptiles. While the Chavin culture spanned both coastal desert and mountains, the two primary cultures of the Early Intermediate period were limited to the coastal desert. The Moche flourished along the northern coast of Peru, the Nazca along the southern coast.11 Andean pottery reached its culmination in these two cultures. ----------out timeframe context---------------- During the Middle Horizon, Andean civilization was united by two great powers: the Wari Empire in the north and the Tiwanaku Empire in the south.11 (This period marks the rise of the first cities in South America; thus, Andean civilization was born during the Middle Horizon.) The cultures of these empires were similar, such that one can speak of an overall "Tiwanaku-Wari culture". Cultural and political fragmentation returned, however, in the Late Intermediate period. The mightiest culture of this age was the Chimu civilization, which flourished along the northern Peruvian coast.11 The scale of Chimu achievement in both engineering (e.g. buildings, roads, irrigation systems) and administration was unprecedented in the Andean region.24 The Chimu capital was the vast city of Chan Chan. The term "Late Horizon" denotes the age of the Inca Empire as the dominant power of the Andes. Although quite short (about half a century), a small Inca state had existed for centuries prior to the Late Horizon. The Inca's dramatic success was based largely on the absorption of Chimu expertise in engineering and administration. The Inca capital was Cuzco, Peru.11 The Inca made the transition from stone tools to bronze tools (e.g. axes, knives, hoes), thereby becoming the only pre-colonial American civilization to achieve the Bronze age (see The Stone, Bronze, and Iron Ages). Although they lacked a writing system, the Inca developed an intricate method of recording numbers with colour-coded knotted cords. They also maintained a network of running messengers along the empire's thousands of miles of roads, allowing news to be swiftly delivered between any two points.A264,11 Ca. 1530, the Inca Empire fell to forces under Francisco Pizarro. As noted in the previous section, the Aztec Empire fell to the Spanish ca. 1520. In order to avoid mixing up these two dates, it may be helpful to remember that the Andes region, being farther away from Europe than Mesoamerica (from the perspective of westward-sailing Europeans), was predictably conquered at a somewhat later date than Mesoamerica.
