Hello everyone, This year and for the past three years 0 A.D. was holding a stand at the FOSDEM. Like every time, it was a very great experience for me, and I was happy to be able to join @Itms, @plumo, @implodedok, @FeXoR, @bb_, @Imarok, @vladislavbelov and @fabio in this adventure. This year was a bit special because I got to co-host a game dev room with the guys at Godot thanks to Akien and Straton and of course to all the people I convinced to give talks and the people that attended said talks. I think the dev room was an overall positive experience so it's great! You can find the videos here. Our room was K.3.201. Some videos might not have been uploaded yet. There were a lot of interesting talks, especially the one about the Spring engine going to Steam. I got to talk a bit with the guys at the GSOC stand and they apparently knew us, so maybe we'll be more lucky this year. I got to meet a lot of people for the first time, some of the above team members, but also @Krinkle, @balduin. I also met @oSoMoN with who we discussed a potential better usage of the Snap Packages for 0 A.D. The idea would be to offer special features to be tested as snap packages on something like Kiwit CMS. By using this specific platform we would be able to set up test scenarios for things not covered by CI and unit tests. I also had the great honor to meet with Ton Roosendal (the CEO of Blender) and Dalai Felinto. We had an informal chat at our stand about our usage of Blender. Bernard Tyers asked me to give a talk at the design dev room next year and I think I'm gonna deliver. The Raspberry Pi 4 I brought had quite a nice success as it caught the eye and people were amazed that it could run on such a low end device. A few people were interested in helping out. We are looking forward to hearing from them. Thanks for all the people who gave us donations! For those who paid for music CDs I hope you'll enjoy them. For those that could not get one you can grab it here. See you all next year, or at the next FLOSS event that we will attend which will likely be JDLL in Lyon, France.6 points

Hello! I've been searching for all kinds of tutorials on how to mod this game and haven't been able to really find everything I need so I figured I'd use this opportunity to introduce my mod to the world and see what people think. I started this project some months ago in Warcraft III for my friends and it was near completion, but then reforged came out and I pulled the plug on the project because I didn't want Blizzard to swoop in and steal my baby from me if I ever decided to publish it. So I had to find something that I could remake my project in since I don't really have the skill to make a whole game. So I remembered that 0 A.D. existed and here I am now! This isn't based off of anything, its entirely my own creation. Its a low to mid fantasy world where gods exist and magic is sparse. There are centaurs, beastmen (satyrs, minotaurs, etc.), gnolls, humans, elves, and orcs. I created my own map for the world and have all kinds of factions thought out. (Fun fact: Amindale is one of the continents in the world, not the name of the world itself!). I I don't have a whole lot to show of it, I only started a few days ago but I hope I can deliver something that people will enjoy! Currently its just my friend and I who are working on it and I'm a beginner so progress is slow but there is progress. Though I guess the progress isn't really the mod itself just conceptual progress... So far I've figured that I want to release the mod in parts, with each part introducing the various factions. Part 1 (Project Amindale) would showcase the 5 factions that inhabit Amindale. I've also gotten all their tech trees sorted out as well as units and stuff like that so I have a clear idea of what I want. I made a Trello laying out this stuff which only my friend and I really have access to. I apologize if any formatting is wrong here, this is my first time posting in a forum and showing this project to the world so I'm very nervous! Also sorry if this post is a mess and doesn't make sense, I am just trying to get my thoughts out! I would like to ask some questions though. 1. What are some tips you would have for a project like this? 2. I'm not a great artist and I don't really know any, is it possible to stitch game assets together into what I need them to be? (I.e. Centaur, Satyr, Minotaur, etc.) 3. For the unit creation tutorial it seems like its outdated, I've followed it to the letter multiple times but it doesn't seem to work, I get this crazy error in game that is pretty long. Is there some kind of updated one or can someone provide a new one or a good example I could follow? If you have any questions about anything please feel free to ask! Thank you for reading I am excited to share more about what I am doing in the future! ^.^5 points

New Hero Portrait: King Nastasen By Sundiata (Malcolm Quartey) King Nastasen, a late Napatan Period ruler of the Kingdom of Kush, Sudan (4th Century B.C.). King Nastasen Ankhkhare was a Napatan Period ruler of the Kingdom of Kush (Sudan), ruled c. 335 B.C. - 315/310 B.C. His mother was Queen Pelkha and his father may have been King Harsiotef. Married to Queen Sekhmakh, and succeeded by King Aryamani. Nastasen is noted for defeating an Upper Egyptian invasion of Kush by Khabbash "taking many fine boats" and putting down many rebellions, thereby consolidating Harsiotef's earlier conquests. Most of what we know about Nastasen comes from the rather lengthy, and well preserved Stela of Nastasen. The submerged tomb underneath his pyramid at Nuri (Nuri 15) is currently under excavation by the Nuri Archaeological Expedition. Early results (remnants of gold) are indicating the real possibility that his tomb has not been looted, and his sarcophagus may still be intact! Because of high water levels the tomb is currently under water and archaeologists have to resort to underwater excavations with scuba gear, a first in Sudan. @OptimusShepard, I started this portrait exactly one day before you shared that documentary in the above post, half of which is about those very excavations! So that was really an incredible coincidence! Watching that docu was a bit surreal for me. And also a great source of inspiration! Nastasen's Pyramid Nuri 15 The Nastasen Stela: Some translated excerpts from the Nastasen Stela: Clearly, humility was not a thing Kushite kings were concerned with... Funnily, Nastasen is mounted on a horse in-game. From the stela we actually find this excerpt: "I went off on a great horse and I reached the Great House. They made obeisance' to me, all the notables and priests of Amun". Got to love 0 A.D.... The rest of the Stela is about Nastasen slaughtering rebels, taking loot, defeating an invasion from Egypt, bigging up his mom, listing his donations to the temples etc, etc... @Stan`, here is a perfectly square PNG version for you: Also, I just registered a personal ArtStation account. Please feel free to head on over there to check out some of my other art and give me some views https://www.artstation.com/malcolmquartey3 points

Awesome! Thank you again. I actually realized what I could do with 0 A.D. with Hyrule Conquest. I'd been following it since its creation in Medieval 2 Total War and its something of an inspiration for my mod actually! I will certainly take a deeper look at it though1 point

Awesome! Thank you all for these details! I do have a programmer (my friend I mentioned in the main post) and I know some programming myself so I think I've got that covered. Where would you recommend I look for an artist to help out? I don't have any money to really speak of so I can't compensate them but I guess it wouldn't hurt to look. I will certainly look into that mythology mod as well, thank you for recommending that! I was looking all over for a comprehensive modding tutorial but couldn't find one, you are amazing. I did look at Megaglest and thought about it but I much prefer 0 A.D. because I've played it in the past and its going to work a whole lot better for what I want the final product to be. Thank you for your replies! I look forward to posting more about my mod!1 point

I guess making people move to Open Source is one of the diamonds Reforged is producing. I'm torn between two suggestions: Use Megaglest, since it seems to be a closer-to-home when it comes to Warcraft III. Stay here. As you can see by the earlier replies that the 0 A.D. Team has plenty of talented Asset Designers. And they're quick to help you if they ever find supporting your project enjoyable. It's the Programming side which you have to accept the frustrations.1 point

Hi, welcome to the forums I would recommend to look at the series plus you can look as well here1 point

Hey @DeadTom, Welcome to the forums and thank you for considering our engine for your mod! 1. Be patient. Modding takes a fair amount of time and it can be frustrating. Find an artist and a programmer to work with you, if you need custom features. Depending on your intent with your mod be careful with the licensed stuff you use. Don't hesitate to ask questions. We'll be happy to assist when we can. 2. You should be able to find some of the assets you mentioned in the mythology mod started by @Rolf Dew. You can find it here 3. Everytime you get an error you can read it in your log files. If it doesn't make sense to you post it here in a code block for instance and we'll help you to fix it if we can. Well, I would differentiate between having a low budget and working with an old engine (aoe 1 DE), having and old engine, but more budget and will to support (aoe 2 DE), and stoping the budget at the middle of the developement and sell and unfinished buggy mess with not a half of the promised features (Warcraft Reforged, AoE HD, AoM HD...)1 point

over criticism? come on is money. companies sells incomplete games lately. this was unimaginable many years ago.1 point

Well, I'm not very fond the over-criticism that sometimes you show here, @Lion.Kanzen, but this time Blizzard-Activision have screwed all way down hard. Poor Warcraft....1 point

first of all i wanna say that i have no idea what multiplying all players points by 1.3 or whatever is to accomplish each player has over a thousand points what more accuracy do you need than accuracy in 1/1000.will it matter if its 1/2000? seems pointless to me. second of all me winning vs stockfish (got 25 points not 40) cannot be used as an example for anything considering that im an extremely unstable player so you really cant say that im a 1500 cant even put me in a range tbh but nevertheless it wasnt my victory if i could take 2 min to search up on how to upload replays id upload the replay of that match which if anyone above 1300 were to watch could realize that it wasnt my victory at all it was stockfishes loss (stockfish had 2 extra berries which would be a game ender in a 1v1 lets say within the range of 300-500 rating points very roughly speaking) he overmakes like 15-20 men for no reason early on like min 5 slowing his eco drastically (btw for anyone who doesnt know how this game works bacically you cant half @#$% 2 things that is basically suicide you have to full @#$% 1 thing so a very inacurate example that gets the point across: dont make 30 men to atack wiht 15 while the rest eco youll lose the 15 men atacking to a superior army and youll lose in eco and lose the game) so without any extra berries i was able to have population that was equal to his early on i think i did my eco ok not poorly but not well and then stockfish just randomly ignores the second extra berries which he had absolutely no reason to ignore they were right next to his wood line so perfectly secure and makes farms at this point (my stamina is utter dogshit) i get exausted and i have low wood so instead of reaching for wood batches by building stuff on the edge i panick and make the wrong decision to go for a late p1 rush (generally best to rush at certain points when the enemy is weakened for exanple when he is going p2 when he just spent 1000 resources on it while you spent all thoes res on men + more as if your rushign you undermake women) the decision was wrong as in chat someone had previously revelaled that stockfish had the map advantage so as far as im concerned hes stronger than me and the longer the game goes on better my chances are vs an opponent who has an economic advantage early on my p1 late rush was decent in setup but since i hadnt scouted with cav or men ect and had no information on stockfishes state i was going on blind against an enemy that if he had played correctly i likely wouldve lost against. TLDR that match was a fluke stockfish messed up as he says on accident but hard to believe as for saying nobody palyes rated anymore and that rating points are irrlevant that is completely incorrect plenty of palyer play rated its a nessesity early on before you reach 1300 as before that plenty of dishonest players will rage quit dont give u points and also anyone below 1300 generally cannot be trusted you wont get into any decent teamgames unless you are 1300 or above as below that nobody can take you seriously skill wise and 1300 is the bare minimum dont think that im saying anyone who is above 1300 is a good player. apart from that saying points are irrelvant is like saying money is irrelevant because its just paper.its what the money represents taht gives it absolute value and same with points.points represent skill of a player and even abouve 1300-1500 there is a significant correlation between someones rating and their skill like 9 out of 10 players above 1300 are withing the range of their rating in their skill (skill)-100 - +100) i think its a great idea to set up like medals or somethign that appear next to the players name if they surpass a certain point currently i can think of 3 benchmarks that most palyers can agree are significant the 1300+ where you now exist you now have a name.1600+ where you are a compentent palyer reliable and significantly above the average 1300+ in skill. the 2000+ where you are elite top 5 again there are few exceptions where players have improper ratings either much higher or lower than their skill but its exception not the rule1 point
