This is either a bot, or the real deal, but either way I’d ignore it. We don’t want this game monetized (or we’d already be selling it), so politely, @#$% off. @Stan` @wowgetoffyourcellphone @hyperion (I know nothing I just said has any real value, due to me not being an official part of the dev team, but there’s a taste of how the community feels)

Yes and from what I read later in their history Spartans relied more on Perioikoi as they couldn’t maintain the same spartiates numbers. So wanted to balance out a little. And helots aren’t exactly “soldiers” they can’t promote, they don’t receive techs….. they are basically cheap bodies to offer a little “missile” action. again maybe the Perioikoi reduced train time isn’t needed. Need more games to sorta see how it works out.
-
This sounds good to me . Meaning, as the game progresses, you need to keep them alive somehow. Im curious why you have this though. Just to counteract the fact you will have less champions and consequently less helots?
-
Ok yeah, that would work… they could get an attack bonus like city states as part of their grouping… and then as they phase up they get additional attack bonuses that don’t happen to other civs. But they won’t have some of the protection, auras that other units have. I can put place holders in for all of this… but will take lots of play time to figure out the right balances. And I can’t really do that by playing against myself any volunteers to play/test mp with me?!??
-
What i meant was: you can make hoplites, Macedonian phalanx, Roman infantry etc benefit from auras, and make tribal warriors a bit beefier and not benefit from auras so they pack a punch in single combat but lose to formations in similar group numbers. But, of course, the differences should be small enough so as not to break the game.
-
So again, they aren’t restricted. They are stronger than regular champ spearman, especially once they are fully promoted. But when you go p2, they take an additional 10% train time. When you go p3, they take an additional 15% on top of that. And a few of their techs add additional train time. So unless you play death match with cheats, or a game for hours it’s harder to replenish/mass them. On the othetide of the equation Perioikoi take 10% less train time in p2 and an additional 10% less p3… so you can basically train 3 periokio in the time it takes to train one spartiates.
-
I agree with @Thalatta, idea is to only restrict Champion spearmen for Spartans additionally. And balance the stats so they kick backsides even in low numbers.
-
Yes, typically you'd need to create a scene for an idea, with the scenario editor you can do most of the work. You might want to do some scripting to make the scene more lively. Then you need to create camera paths (again scenario editor) and finally render the thing. I don't see an issue with uploading videos about random topics to the play0ad youtube account if they are of similar quality as the release videos, whether short or long. Civ intros sounds like a good idea. Doing a few of them is also good practice for when the next release video is due in roughly 6 months. Not necessarily recruiting as an official team member but surly as a contributor. I for one contributed to many open source projects, hardly any of them in an official role and don't see a reason not to do so in the future. Less commitment but still able to improve what I already use and value. For some that is plenty satisfying already.

Video Editor Application
WannaBeHero replied to WannaBeHero's topic in Applications and Contributions
I would be glad to help out with those, hardest part of making trailers is getting the necessary footage. I'm not sure if your goal is to recruit people to play or work on the project mostly (I mean why not both lol) but you can start Dev Logs, run 1 minute long shorts showcasing civs, promote community maps, etc. -
Yes, BUT in our mod "citizen soldiers" are not as good at eco as civilians.... Sparta doesnt have civlians... their Helots have the same gather rates as civilians but are worse fighters than normal "CS" We have the aura based ones... I need to think of how it could work for units that are NOT know for formation, ie the tribal warriors. Auras need another unit to trigger the aura... So phlanx for example only takes effect if there is another unit with it close by,... even though it really should be you need at least X amount for it to trigger... I dont know how to do that yeah, so basically spartiates take longer and longer to train as you progress, so they are harder to reinforce so you need at least more Peiroikois. We actually limit neomades for now, cause they are 0 pop... they are helots who eventually promote and they are weaker than all CS but they don't take up pop... but I may change that a little since that was back when Helots were 0 pop.
-
I think Sparta and Thebes populations were comparable, but full Spartan citizens were abysmally less. Maybe forget that extra population penalty, and deal with it by limiting more the number of Spartiates as one progresses. Neodamodes units should kind of become a necessity. All this has been proposed already by me and others before me, and aligns well with reality.
-
Maybe have a look at DE? @wowgetoffyourcellphonehas aura-based formation bonuses such as shield wall for hoplites and massed pikes for Macedonian phalanx.
-
This looks like a great way to restrict Spartan econony. One question: are Perioikoi completely unlimited?
-
Love all this! Thank you, keep it coming Although I guess if it's too much too soon I'll probably miss parts and need to ask again Not sure about this. What would be great if made correctly: tribal societies have units which are strong when fighting one to one, but no or very little formation bonuses, whereas infantry from city-states, republics etc have better formation bonuses in such a way bigger formations are either equally matched or favor city-states and republics This would be nice, I need to think about if there is a way to do that... We do have a small bonus for Testudo, and Phalanx formations.. even though formations don't really work. So similar to Greek city states, they could get a dmg bonus, but not have any "formation" bonus... but currently the only civs that have the formation bonuses are hoplite civs for phalanx, a couple other specific champ situations, and roman legionnaires/champ swords for Testudo. @Thalatta yes, the cheaper wooden builds can be restricted... and then mobilization could be one of the other tribal bonuses. Also we keep referring to it as hoplite tradition, but yes I did rename it to hoplite reforms based on your Spartan post. Im playing around with colonies for Sparta, so that could be added to all. Also I am removing the territory influence bonus from CC on phases ups for city states... Sparta doesnt have the theater.. and I could even remove tettirory bonus from theater and give it more of a "moral/efficiency" bonus Sparta's farms are "food" drop sites, so you don't necessarily need to have them next to a "farmstead" My only problem with giving sparta another pop penalty is Im OCD and if its 10% already, that is 90, 180, 270 etc.... Also shouldn't it really be Thebes that is the smallest?

Hello 0 A.D. / Wildfire Games community, My name is Tongfei, and I am from MIRACLE GAMES (MG), a Microsoft Store ecosystem partner focused on PC publishing, store operation, and additional monetization opportunities for games and apps. We are reaching out because we noticed 0 A.D. is an open-source SLG project with a strong community and history. We are interested in discussing potential advertising or promotional support for the Microsoft Store version, but we could not find a direct contact. We would like to connect with the team member responsible for the Microsoft Store release, distribution, or advertising coordination to understand: What engine or framework is used for the product? Current status of advertising SDK integration or technical setup. Any technical challenges we could assist with. Planned or suitable ad placements that would not disrupt user experience. Main user regions and approximate distribution of players (if visible from backend data). We fully respect that 0 A.D. is community-driven and open source. This post is solely intended to locate the correct contact and understand whether this discussion is relevant. If anyone can help point us to the right maintainer or representative, or forward this message internally, we would greatly appreciate it. Below is my email address: wutongfei@mguwp.com

Tribes: mostly wooden cheap buildings. That doesn’t mean they don’t have their identity, like German mobility, Iberian defenses, etc. They should deal with their lack of manpower with Confederations. Although these categories serve to structure and simplify things, incorrect generalisations should be avoided: Gauls would be good at fighting in formations, for example. City-states: They should deal with their lack of manpower with Leagues (and Mercenaries). I’d avoid such unspecific names like “Civic Pride” (could apply to us!), I proposed @Emacz to change Hoplite Tradition to Hoplite Reform, since that’s how the literature calls that. I’d indeed remove the awfully named Will to Fight, and add some interestingly named necessary equivalent tech wherever needed. City-states indeed did not expand like empires (or republics and kingdoms), and I was a bit put off at the beginning when building more CCs with them. They should be colonies, and not do all what the original CC does. I think this is something that has to be reviewed for all civs, since some do have structures like this. I’m against “all proposed city-states already have the theater to expand original area”, Sparta didn’t have such a thing, I’ve already proposed to remove it. Regarding the Spartans in particular: they were eco driven regarding agriculture, their lands were among the most fertile of the Greek, and should have a population penalty on top of the lower population just for being a city-state. Spartan trade could be penalised for many reasons, as Sekunda states, “the age at which a Spartan adult was allowed to live at home with his wile is not entirely clear, but he was not permitted into the marketplace to converse with his fellow adults until the age of 30”, while Cartledge says “overseas trade in essentials was relatively unimportant” and “relatively restricted”, although “Sparta became much more accessible with the opening up of local economy in the Hellenistic period”. The use of iron ingots is not a myth, but “there is no evidence that the retention of iron spits as a store of wealth and standard of value prevented internal economic exchanges”, and “there were many good reasons why Sparta had not coined previously. The metal would have had to be imported, whereas the iron used in Sparta’s traditional spit-money was present locally in abundant supply”. In any case, regarding an encompassing name for a civ bonus (actually, penalty) to penalise trade, Cartledge goes into great extents to argue that it’s not because of austerity but self-sufficiency, for which I’d name it Autarkism, given the passage “Sparta through its control of the Eurotas and Pamisos valleys was extraordinarily autarkic in essential foodstuffs; and its possession of abundant deposits of iron ore within its own frontiers may have been a contributory factor in the decision not to import silver to coin”. Of course, I’ve already proposed many of these things on:

Was just told, there is now a release video ( by @Stan` the silent helper 2 months ago? ). Doesn't change the fact for months prior to the release we weren't able to make it happen. It takes a lot of time and dedication, so someone with the required passion for such would still be desirable.

Hello! I have been enjoying this great mod, and I simply love it. Just wanted to let you know I noticed this strange thing, it is a bug? I saw something similar trying Vulkan and fixed turning off GPU Skinning, in this case turning on/off doesn't make a difference. Screen Recording 2026-06-03 at 2.05.49 AM.mov

Are they able to defeat other fully-upgraded champion spearmen one to one? Maybe Will To Fight could be differentiated for every civ or every civ category. Maybe have a big expensive tech common for city-states that alter stats in one way, then another for empires etc. Again, just riffing. Agreed. One on one, they should be able to beat infantry from other civs, but be lacking in other ways like economy, cavalry etc.

There is no release video for 0.28.0, so obviously we had no one doing it. This isn't about some streaming their matches. It would still be desirable to have a release video for 0.28.0, if you are up for that would be fantastic, as it's the only release missing one. So better late than never. It would also be a project where you would need to learn most about what there is to learn making videos using the engine.
