Yiuel
There is Googlebot in the forums... That's Odd!
Dnas
Yeah, this new forum engine tracks when search engines crawl the place. It's pretty neat.

DarkAngelBGE
The old forum version did, too, but we disabled it. Now we don't to show you that our community is actually being crawled.
Lorian
I don't really understand why forums get crawled...
Black Op
Most likely the only sign I ever saw of the U.S. Government taking away our liberties. Or much more likelysomething to determine where the Forums are listed on Google....
Dnas
Of course. That's how most search engines add pages. They crawl them and add the most current version to Google. When you search in Google, you don't search the current version of the webpage. That would take ages. And since they would have to search every site for every query, you'll loose your bandiwth in an instant because everyone's doing Google searches. What they do is they search the version of the page that Google has in it's database. The way Google updates it's database is by crawling. It goes to the pages listed, indexes them. Then to the pages linked by the current pagesThen to the pages linked by those pagesThen to the pages linked by those pagesetc. And they crawl pretty frequently. Black Op
Swell, I just noticed we have Ask Jeeves spying on us as well. Edited October 31, 2004 by Black Op
goldenratiophi
Now what if we went to the list of users online and it said:"Googlebot...................................Posting in forum...."
Dnas
Actually, that might happen, but I suspect that IPB has something coded against it.Googlebot follows links on a page. The Add Reply button is a link, so Googlebot may follow it and the forum engine may consider Googlebot "posting" in that topic.

Dnas
It wouldn't. Googlebot doens't type anything into the forms and IPB won't let you make a blank post. And I don't know if Google follows form submission buttons.

Lorian
That's funny, it'd be cool if it did post a blank message
Dnas
It would be funny but it won't.I just realized something. Googlebot is treated as a guest (AFAIK) so it can't access the Add Reply page anyway. And even if it did, it wouldn't be allowed to post a blank post anyway. Dnas
Nope. They don't submit forms or fill them out. Thankfully.
