Terra Magna Infrastructure / Kushites Mod Integration
balduin replied to balduin's topic in Rise of the East
@niektb Could you provide me some information regarding how far are you with the Terra Magna mod development? You mentioned you need a logo and "a few showcasing screenshots". In addition you mentioned that the Rise of the East sub forum and ModDB page will be transformed. How, far are you with those efforts? Furthermore, I saw in the JSON file that Terra Magna mod requires the currently developed 0 A.D. version 22. Based on that information I assume your plans are to release the first version of the Terra Magna mod together or shortly after the release of 0 A.D. 22 "Venustas". Could you please confirm if my assumption is correct and if so, how far are you with the development/testing of the Terra Magna mod? -

@niektb In my opinion you over dramatize the translation of one single sentence. What we translated was: "The Kushite Mod introduces a brand new civilization to the Open Source real time strategy game: 0 A.D.". @Sundiata and I already translated that sentence in a few languages, simply because we can. @Lion.Kanzen and @fabio added two others. We write those translations into the README.md file and have above each translation the ISO 639-1 two letter language code. As you can see we are far away from setting up a translation framework. I understand your point about the quality content. Doing the research is the first step to produce high quality content. However, we need people which will do the 3D models and sound, because neither @Sundiata nor I have those skills. But we want to offer artists information on what those models should/could look like. We want to make sure that artists and others can make small or big contributions depending on how much time they have. To get to the point we need to do research and structure the research results. Additionally, we have to create a road map, define tasks, create a list of buildings and props we need. Both @Sundiata and I are working on those parts. We are not trying to show off, but we are trying to keep in touch with the 0 A.D. community as well as communicating what we do or did to those who are interested. We do this through this forum topic and the Github repository. That is the necessary project management overhead.- 1.040 replies

@Lion.Kanzen for now only some parts of the repository README.md file. Later we will translate the Mod in at least two languages. We won't translate the Spezification that would be too much work.- 1.040 replies

I agree with @Sundiata every contribution is valuable. Furthermore, I disagree with @niektb, because the reasons to translate the description before we even have the mod has a very simple motivation: attention. I want that people of all ages and background can understand what the Kushites Mod repository is about. Hopefully some of them will be interested in playing or even contributing to the modification.- 1.040 replies

Anybody willing to contribute by translating it in any other language? How about a Slavic language, such as Belarusian, Russian, Ukrainian, Czech, Slovak, Serbian, Serbo-Croatian, Slovenian, Bulgarian, Macedonian? Chinese and Japanese would be nice too.- 1.040 replies

The Kingdom of Kush: A proper introduction [Illustrated]

I updated the specification. My goal was to structure the content @Sundiata posts and figure out for which units information are missing. In the village phase most civilizations can train the following units: Worker (Woman) Archer Spearmen Ranged Cavalry (throwing javelins or mounted archer) Fishing Boat the structure for the kushits will be: Archer -> Nubian Bowmen Spearman -> Nubian Spearman Worker (Woman) ? Ranged Cavalry? Fishing Boat -> Wooden canoe or papyrus boat? The first question is how did the woker woman look like? The next question is what kind of ranged cavalry should the kushites have? Should the ranged cavalry throw javelins or shoot with the bow? Is the unit sitting on a horse or a camel? The final questions is in regards to the fishing boat. @Sundiata posted already some information on boats: However, the remaining question is should the boat be a wooden canoe or a papyrus boat? To answer the question we should first answer the question if papyrus (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyperus_papyrus) can grow on the riverbanks of the Nile in Sudan. Papyrus can only grow in shallow water in areas such as lakes and river deltas. The Nile in Sudan is quite fast. Based on this blog entry: http://fishconsult.org/?p=11511 I would assume the kushites used wooden canoes. Here are more information about fisheries in Sudan: http://www.environmentservices.com/projects/programs/RedSeaCD/DATA/Module06/M06_box_sudan_fisheries.html. And I found some images showing fisherboats and boats in today's South Sudan: https://journeyswithjesusalongtheuppernile.wordpress.com/gallery-2/.- 1.040 replies

@stanislas69 Art is perfect. However, there are still several open questions regarding units. As soon as those questions are resolved we will try to create smaller tasks out of them. We will keep you posted. Until then I am happy that you work on the main game .- 1.040 replies

@Sundiata Great work. The illustrations look very nice. What's about horse archers? As far as I know you mentioned previously that the Kushites had horse archers. However, the only images I can find are about Assyrian horse archer. Like this one: Furthermore, if you publish your art please license them under CC-BY-SA 3.0 and mention the license for each illustration or picture. CC-BY-SA 3.0 is the license used by 0 A.D. for artistic assets. For example: Meroitic Cavalry Lancer, performing maneuvers on the Butana Steppe, not long after the annual rains, by Malcolm Kwadwo Kwarte Quartey (a.k.a Sundiata). Licensed under CC-BY-SA 3.0. The licensing is important to avoid legal issues. You as creator/artist can specify the license of your work.- 1.040 replies

@Sundiata Thank you for your research. Commenting on your post is difficult, because you do not use figure numbers or anything else to make referencing those pictures easier. You happened to do that. What I find remarkable is, the role of woman as head of state and head of military. The merotic reliefs show queens and kings in an equal way. Especially, the relief with the title: "Queen Amanishakheto and Amanirenas(?) or Amanitore (?) " illustrates the equality. The queens have bow and arrow in their hand. Bow and arrow seems to be a symbol of military leaders, because the relief "Kushite relief showing Apedemak and a Meroitic ruler" shows the king Apedemak or the a good holding bow and arrow. On the vase "The Departure of Memnon for Troy, Greek, circa 550-525 B.C.", king Memnon has again a bow in his hand. Additionally, in all meroitic reliefs the king, goods and queens are holding the arrows in the same hands as the bows. Furthermore, the relief "Queen Amanishakheto and Amanirenas(?) or Amanitore (?)" also shows a small gate with a small ornament on the top, a typical element of the meroitic architecture. Another interesting detail is the armor of the kings and goods from the temple in Naqa. Several reliefs show people having their torso covered by armor consisting of small metal plates. Maybe the fine piece of craftsmanship was only used in ceremonies.- 1.040 replies

The Kingdom of Kush: A proper introduction [Illustrated]
balduin replied to Sundiata's topic in Official tasks
@Loki1950 Thanks, I never used the term "ram" before. However, I refer to the images @Sundiata shared in the post "Temple Meroe 250" , that is quite a unique characteristics. But, by looking at the post again he mentioned: "On the right is a ram statue (representing Amun, protecting a smaller image of Taharqa, from the processional entrance road to the Amun temple at Kawa." Taharaqa was a pharaoh of the Twenty-fifth Dynasty and at the same time king of the Kingdom of Kush. Depicting Amun as ram is not what the Egyptians used to do, that is something specific to Kushites. The question is why did they choose a ram and why does this ram has this specific horn form? Is there any sheep breed with similar horn forms in Sudan?- 1.040 replies

@Sundiata What is the meaning of the ram (sheep)? Does the ram symbolize a god? The pharaoh, or what ever human is being under the head of the ram, makes the ram look very important. Do you know what kind of sheep breed they relate to? It reminds me of the Cameroon sheep:- 1.040 replies

I think for the start it would be nice to implement the bullets as extremely fast flying arrows and cannonballs are very fast shooting catapults. In my opinion more important than having a visual effect of gunpowder is to have the right sound and a good reload animation. Reloading a gun should take some time. Spear and sabre cavalry should be fairly easy to implement.

Terra Magna is the name of the 0 A.D. modification which will have the following civs: Han China (Rise of the East) Zapotecs as @niektb suggested it would be a good idea to integrate Kushite mod into the the Terra Magna mod. To integrate the Kushites mod I would like to know where can I find the repository for the Terra Magna mod? Furthermore, do you have or consider having a Moddb page for the Terra Magna mod? Will there be a separate forum for the Terra Magna mod? @Sundiata Do you have any questions regarding the Kushites Mod integration?
