Okay, so it's established that multiple Unit Classes have benefits from the side of the developer and/or modder. But I think that the Foot Companions and Egyptian Pikemen should not have the Spear class in addition to Pike class. But what do you guys think?

I disagree with that Living Conditions in the Stables should affect the Barracks. That tech should either be in the Barracks, or it should affect the Stables.

Thanks for the info. I think this was the one I was looking for. Thanks for this one as well! -
UI Bug - Structure Tree Doesn't Fit 4:3
sphyrth replied to sphyrth's topic in Game Development & Technical Discussion
... which reminds me. @Stan` there was once a complaint about something being "too small" in the UI, and you suggested a quickfix to it. Does it also work for the Structure Tree (scaling it down to my preferences I mean)? -
I know that I said I don't mind this thing and I couldn't really care less, but that was a couple of Alphas back then. For the sake of suggesting improvements, I changed my mind. If the Structure Tree doesn't fit, there should at least be an ability to "scroll" across the parts that I can't see. In this example, anything beyond the Palisades is beyond my vision, and I can't access the "View Additional Info" button. (I would also suggest that the Civic Center should be in the "Phase II" category, but that's another topic).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0B69nilZfs I forgot how these videos get automatically embedded. Here's what I liked about his observations: - Realistic (graphics-wise of course) - Historically Accurate - Attention to Detail - He likes Citizen Soldiers!

@Servo Here are some comparisons: You should compare your current narration video with my first one. I had no editors that time, and it took me several takes to get it the way I wanted it. And I still ended up being to shy to speak. What I use is simplescreenrecorder to record the video, and my phone for recording the audio. Make Audacity get rid of some noise. And finally use OpenShot to sync them together. It's a hassle, really. In the recording department, I don't have the patience setting up OBS. The fact that you have it means you have already the superior setup. Here are my tips based on experience: Keep recording, and keep talking. Experience is important. This is the best way I got that "shyness" away. Also, it helped set my mentality from "You're talking to a computer" to "You're talking to people on the internet." Watch your own videos, observe where you think you're lacking in and improve on it. This one's difficult on my part as I didn't like hearing my own voice. If I didn't want to watch my own video, who would? But at least you have yourself as your greatest critic. Have a Model Youtuber and Watch His/Her early Videos. I like resonance22channel's style. I wanted to be like him. But watching his newest videos wouldn't help me a lot. His first videos are still way better than mine, but I did see how far he's gotten because of them. The same case can be made for ZeroEmpires. Comments Section This one I can't help you much. But I hope you get some form of encouragement / critiques in the comments section. I don't know if it's true to the other Youtubers, but getting feedback from people is encouraging for me. So I hope you'll get some too.

Blacksmith Issues and Possible Improvements
sphyrth replied to Thorfinn the Shallow Minded's topic in Gameplay Discussion
I like the concept of "You can't have all upgrades" like what Delenda Est did to the Blacksmith. It forces you to choose between Upgrade Paths rather than clicking everything until it's all gone. I have a similar idea of a time-based upgrade: You can only upgrade 5 or 10 minutes after your previous chosen upgrade. -
You can edit me out of the OP. I ain't part of any of the hardworking contributors to the game.
-
The thread is revealing the issues at hand. The question isn't about affecting Gameplay, but destroying it. @wowgetoffyourcellphone's answer to @Feldfeld's question is the embodiment of @Nescio's concern for the "necessary [gameplay] evil". The question "Does it Destroy Gameplay?" can be expressed by the players' opinions. Take for example their popular mods (Champion's Mod, and borg-'s Mod). These two are examples of "The Hardcore Players' Mod". Last time I checked they don't employ the "Mod-makers Mod". Why? We tend to say, They'll get used to it. Without even asking Will they want it? That will be the crux of the matter. If they want it, then they'll only see it as something that affects the gameplay. If they don't, then they see it as something that destroys gameplay. The best-case scenario I'm looking for is that there will be some hardcore players who will promote the idea of Fields away from the Civic Center by employing a mod that does that.
-
Hmm.... Seems to me that mod-makers are generally unified: Fields surrounding Civic Centers don't make sense! Of course, I'm talking about the mod-making community. I want to know what the hardcore players have to say about this. @ValihrAnt especially.

The other bonuses are interesting. The only visual problem with that is that's going to have overwhelmingly large text in its description.

Balance is a recurring problem, actually. So your concerns can be taken. I think that the Britons are intended to be the New Player's Faction, so they're overpowered. At least they're not as strong as before. Back then, 10-15 slingers can demolish houses and storehouses so quickly that they ignore soldiers hitting them. I'm also in favor in nerfing them again, but I want to maintain their Rushing Status. The Ptolemies are said to have the slowest Cavalry Rushes. So if you get clobbered by one, you have to re-evaluate your strategies countering them. In a real war, there are a mix of experienced soldiers: veterans who still don't like to kill, and veterans who got used to killing that it destroyed their moral compasses. Crushing New Players isn't wrong unless you plan to give them "Teaching Games". You only have to worry about looking like a Tryhard. Resigning because you no longer see the point is also fine as long as you tell everyone in the game "GG" or something like that. I think Resigning is only hotly debated in Ranked Games, because you know, (I can still win even if it will take me three days to get there). -- Well, that's just my opinion on the matter.

I remember that being suggested a long time ago. I just don't know what happened to it.
-
That's true, but this post was written in a time when those tutorials were outdated and/or too technical for new players. I bumped this because I had to review on the things I'm doing wrong since I haven't played in a long time. That's why I think it deserves to be pinned. And yes, I witnessed both the start and the growth of Valihrant and Tom0ad. Both of them are fairly new.
-
... or recommend them not to batch queue since your guide will not assume it.
-
lol - And I thought we should also put wheat on the other upgrades.
-
This guide may be obsolete on some parts, but it's still so useful that I believe that this deserves to be pinned.
-
I would say that I love this particular take on the UI. The choice of color palettes is so consistent with the game environment that it makes the upper UI look like it needs to follow suit.
-
I don't think Alpha 22 exists anymore, though.

How do you increase your borders?
sphyrth replied to Robin Hood of Sherwood's topic in Gameplay Discussion
Assuming that you're already in Town Phase and the territory doesn't cover it, there's a technique called Territory Crawl. One way to do that is to keep building houses on the edge of your territory in the direction where the stones are. -
[ANSWERED] Need More Info About Unit and Building Classes
sphyrth replied to sphyrth's topic in General Discussion
I guess I inadvertently opened up a related issue. -
We don't like to admit it, but this thread shows that "Citizen Soldiers don't make sense for the basic Gameplay". Problem: Barracks is intuitively for Military, but the game made it Economy-centered. Solutions Offered: borg-'s Mod removes CS from the CC. DE does the same (or something similar). Even 0abc did that: Women only in CC. The Barracks must have a Trick Exp function. - That's my favorite feature in Vox Populi (Garrisoned Units gain Trickle Exp). Solutions Suggested: Make CS from the Barracks "Advanced Rank" while CS from the CC "Basic Rank" Call to Arms Make the CS visually stand-out as Economy Units at the beginning Slaves, Workers, etc. Exp + Rank vs. Work Efficiency will conversely shift depending on what you focus them to do (work or fight). My Opinion: Personally, I like all solutions being put forth. I'll just state my favorite ones: CS should be visually Economic at the beginning. Basic Rank in CC, Advanced Rank in Barracks Trickle Exp for Units Garrisoned in Barracks

[ANSWERED] Need More Info About Unit and Building Classes
sphyrth replied to sphyrth's topic in General Discussion
@feneur Sorry for being vague. I only realized it after reviewing the thread. For some context, I have this thinking of "If the UI needs improvement, one of them is to remove some clutter." and I have this assumption that seeing two seemingly redundant classes (Worker and Citizen) is part of that clutter, and one of them needs to go (or at least become non-visible). Now, I'm asking why Worker and Citizen should exist as separate classes. The answers I got is "From the standpoint of devs/modmakers, it's a great distinction.". And I can see why. But from the player's standpoint, "Why?", and @fatherbushido is giving me hints. =========================== @fatherbushido That is IF there's an instance that does that. I won't badger you into finding one. Even I can do a work as minimal as that (like I said, I haven't been playing in a long time - so I need to brush up on my knowledge about the game). I'm sure the mods (which I'm currently checking out) put that distinction to use. I'm marking this thread as [ANSWERED], because it already is. It just took my slow mind *some time to grasp it all. Thanks for the help!
