AnguishedBlade
I remember the buildings were supposed to be 2-D. Why are they 3-D now? They looked fine when I saw them in 2-D format. And wouldn't 2-D graphics take much less space as 3-d models?Sorry about this, it's been a while since I've been here.....
Argalius
Well that really has to be very long, because 0AD is a 3D game now, not a 2D mod anymore.
CodeOptimist
Yes, a while back 0 A.D. was going to use a "hybrid" approach (3D terrain, 2D buildings). Eventually, the decision was made to switch to a completely 3D engine, as everything generally looks better and is more flexible that way. Dnas
Ah. That would be why the old screenshots looked 3d, but 2d at the same time. How would they have looked like when the camera is tilted or rotated, though? Would that look a weird as expected, or is there some way around it?
Fire Giant
And wouldn't 2-D graphics take much less space as 3-d models?←No, I think space was one of the reasons why we switched to full-3d, as high-quality 2d renders tend to be larger than a 3d model plus its texture. Also, we wanted to have the option to have a "free camera" for cinematics and such neat things, and we concluded that graphics hardware will be much faster in some years, so we can still have good-looking buildings, even if they are 3d. Asides, I think full-3d was easier to code for the programmers
Aeros
How would they have looked like when the camera is tilted or rotated, thoughThat wouldn't even be possible since the game would be 2D.
Dnas
Then what would be the point of the 3d terrain?
Aeros
It looks smoother and better, easier to impliment, and units move through elevation smoother.Cossacks is an example of a 2d game with 3d terrain.
Dnas
Oh. I get it now.
Quacker
Rise of Nations is another example (and a bit more popular).
Aeros
Rise of Nations utilized alot more 3d though and had more 3D units. The result was a game that look 3D, but wasn't so you couldn't rotate the camera or do very many cool things, makes you wonder what was the point. Centurion_13
If they made all this 3d stuff it seams rather pointless to make it 2d. all the same Im glad 0ad has turned 3d.
ZeZar
Grapics in Cossacs AND RoN sucked. I HATE THEM!!Hope you guys keep far away from t hose kind of grapics!
Cassius Allanus
I play Rise of Nations all the time. I find the graphics to be just fine, although I care more about the gameplay. National borders are a nice innovation Oh yes, that reminds me, how will the provinces and territories be implemented in 0 A.D.?EDIT: Oops sorry, I didn't see that in the FAQ. Don't bother with my question
I_Would_Say
I think I disagree with basically everyone here - I like 2D graphics!!! They lag less and, while they may not look as good, they are fine IMHO. I think games shouldn't concentrate too much on graphics and looks because that concentration could be better spent elsewhere - historical accuracy, playability, balance, significance, variety, and erm... historical accuracy! 2D games can look nice too. Oh well - just opinions.
MarkT
It's not just for appearance that we went for full-3D: it's also simpler - allowing, as you mention, us to do other things with our time - it allows things (like changing the perspective) that we couldn't have done otherwise, and a big reason is that 3D models are more compact than a bunch of 2D renders. For a game distributed entirely over the 'net, that's a reasonable consideration
I_Would_Say
So you're saying it is easier to make a 3D game than a 2D one? Interesting....
Fire Giant
It is, I think - in terms of programming. You do not need to care about sprite/3d-model relations and sprite placement/handling in the game world, but can keep everything down to only needing to support 3d objects. For the artists, it may be harder - they need to have an eye on poly counts, and the art may be less appealing, but for 0 A.D., the way of full 3d was right, with the game being developed by limited (free)-time developers and people having to download all the data over the internet (3d is much more efficient by file sizes). MarkT
So you're saying it is easier to make a 3D game than a 2D one? Interesting....←Well, pure 2D is relatively easy, but it's generally easier to go full 3D than a 2D-3D hybrid.
CodeOptimist
Well, pure 2D is relatively easy, but it's generally easier to go full 3D than a 2D-3D hybrid.←Very well said. A hybrid engine opens a whole new "can of worms"! Plus, a full 3D engine looks better.
I_Would_Say
So is AOK pure 2D or 2D-3D? I recommend doing whatever AOK did.
Mythos_Ruler
I thought graphics in RoN were horrible. Not just because it was 2D, but because of its color palette. Everything looked so washed out, making countering extremely difficult, among other things.

Not just because it was 2D, but because of its color palette.
