Yes you can definitely, nowadays nobody is working on it and since almost no one knows what to do with it the development in this area lays dormant. Btw if you could document your changes it would be nice plus from time to time when you will have time if you did some overview what you did so that any potential reviewer or volunteer will know what to review and how to continue to develop it.
