New technology idea for Civilians

Name: Logistics

Effect: Civilians carry +10 more resources, gather stone and metal 100% faster.

Cost: 400 Wood, 300 Metal, unlocked after Hand-Cart in the City phase.

The intent of this late-game tech is to make Civilians still useful after the population boom slows down and you start to replace them with more CS. Also, this makes Wheelbarrow and Hand-Cart technology more useful in the long run/worth getting.

It could also be one way to test if any more changes to the Civilians are useful or not.

Civilians gathering at the same rates as soldiers already makes them very interesting, and there isn't much need to buff them further.

It's not that hard to understand so bear with me.
When you fight, using the maximum of accumulated economic power is generally the best choice. Therefore, there isn't much incentives to leave any capable fighter chopping wood or whatever behind. Strike with full power.
So what would you do :

  1. Send all capable soldier
  2. Send only some, while others gather resources

That's right! Sending all is likely to favor your odds in battle!

Obviously you also need resources, to grow your economy meanwhile, and replace dying units.
To do so, you also have two option :

  1. Use cheap units (50 food)
  2. Use expensive units (50 food + 50 wood)

Yes! Using cheaper units that gather at the same rates then expensive one is more efficient!

When you come out of battle, and both sides lost a large amount of their population, you need to "repop". What would be the best thing to do in that case?

  1. Repopulate as fast as you can, using houses, and civic center to make females civilians, to get back at max pop (therefore max eco)
  2. Repopulate slower training soldiers and keep having lower impact of the game overall

Exactly! To maximize your impact on the game, you should aim at staying as closest to full pop as possible, including late game, after "bomming".

Inverted correlation between military score and civilian representation in population (not just me but others too) :

Should Romans have access to this technology?

Cause their late game is balanced around the fact that their citizen are stronger in a fight but worse at gathering resources.

Why are roman citizens stronger in a fight? did i miss something about the a28 updates?

Marian Reforms replaces many of your Roman units with versions with superior combat stats, but a little less than half as much gather speed iirc.

You then have a Spearman with generic stats in your Civic Center that you have to use if you want to have a citizen with the default gather speed.

Civilians gather food better and wood somewhat slower than CS. My tech idea doesn't affect food and wood gather rates. It allows players to rely on civilians in the late game to gather stone and metal at equal or greater rates than using soldiers.

While you already can use civilians to gather metal (and send all your CS to fight), it is not as efficient as leaving ~24 CS in your base to gather metal while you fight.
You would typically try to maximize metal gathering for champions or upgrades, that's why I left stone out.

right, sorry I was reading that as civilians, was thinking you somehow meant there "women" were stronger than other civs.

civilians are already strong enough economically, I (and @Atrik) don't think it's necessary to buff their metal gather rate too

i know you think they are strong enough econimicall but we definitely tweaked things in Classical Warfare AEA, you should check it out :)

Some civs still have the "women" and cs soldiers, as well as a serf unit.

"gendered" civilians are a little stronger than "women" :)

Goal was to somewhat speed up the "boom" so you could focus more on the fighting aspects.
