Roman champ swordman (Italic Heavy Ifantry)

these are champs with 200 life and better attack then the Roman Legionaries... Yet the heavy swordman promote (with 2000 exp, took about 25 minutes cooking in barracks) to roman Legionaries.  Why would you want to promote them to a weaker unit? Am I missing something?

For the aura?

I don't know where to look it up atm and you say you tried it. I wouldn't expect champs to gain any XP and thusly never to promote to anything. I thought you could only promote elite spear and sword CS to legionary.  (When I play rome I turn half of my "tower guys" into legionaries.)

No, not the aura, if you train a champ swordman (Italic heavy infantry) and it reaches 2000 exp (i did it sitting in baracks) they "promote" more like a demotion though, to Legionaries.  Unless legionaries have some special ability I dont know about?

Sorry, I mixed them up with the centurions. I dug through the ditches unit files on gitea and still can't really tell what they're about.

(Are you playing SVN and it got something to do with Roman reforms?)

I'm playing my mod, which is built on top of com mod 26.13 with some of the 14 features added. Im just going to go into the file and disable promtion, since it makes no sense at this point :)

Have them promote to Centurions.

I could, but since they are "Heavy swordsman" I actually changed their template a little.  Same as secludes heavy swordsman. They do same attack dmg, but i slowed down the attack speed just a little, also slowed down their walk/run speed but added extra armor.  After all they are "Heavy" i figured that meant Heavily armored :)

Also I just posted another topic about artwork, maybe you can help me with that :)

Promotion is the best means for a tech to convert a unit into another unit. U can see this with the mace silver shields. In this case, since the champ swords are supposed to be unavailable after the tech for historical reasons, they convert to legionaries.

however, I think for the final version of the Marian reforms, it would be better to do a reskin approach like what is done for the CS cavalry units.

Wait so once legionaries were around they didnt use italic swordman?   From a game play point of view, wouldnt you want ur champs to stay stronger though?  It would be wierd if u ahd some of the heavy swordman and then u researched marian reforms and they turned into a "weaker" unit.  Or jsut in battle, if they survived that long. Maybe legionaries need to be stronger? of course then htey would be really OP once u convert all ur regular swords to them.

P.S what is CS cavalry units? :)

Well, there is a topic for the roman reforms, but I'll make it brief. For historical accuracy, we cannot have extraordinarius in the post-reform roster.

The reforms are meant to change the gameplay somewhat, but not completely switch the civ out for something else. Unlocking onagers, training centurions, and unlocking legionaries are certainly enough changes for one tech to accomplish. Therefore, in order to preserve other units and improve the look of the reforms tech, units should be reskinned with their post reforms counterparts.

Its a way to add some cool factor and try and maintain historical accuracy without completely rearranging the gameplay.

Give'em another shirt, maybe add a tassel to their helmets... (Skin=the way a unit looks, re-skin=change their appearance.)

I recognize its not ideal for one's champs to be downgraded to swords.

But you still want to do it?
